Totally agree with your list so far! But from one young mama to another (I’m 20 and my hubs is 23 and this is our second baby in 2 years of marriage) -don’t neglect your husband postpartum. Talk about your expectations with him, what you think you’ll need from him. For example...”when I sit down to nurse, could you bring me a cup of tea or my water bottle” little things like that...can save a mama’s sanity postpartum. It’s very easy and somewhat normal to feel like you do everything with the newborn...nursing, changing, soothing. So talk with your husband about his needs postpartum and your needs, emotional as well as physical. It’s easy to lose sight of each other when you’re so focused on your new child! But the marriage is the foundation of the family.♥️♥️

Also, in your planning...PREP for postpartum!!! Take super good care of your nutrition & self care postpartum...nutrition and sleep are essential in avoiding/lessening PP depression.

I agree with everything. Even though i nannied a ton and never needed to use a bottle warmer, I still asked for one, thinking I would get a super finnicky baby, and the last thing I wanted was major uncertainty about the temp of the bottle... So now I have one, and it is pretty unnecessary. I use it becauae I have it, but frankly, it is more trouble than it's worth to use and clean. Also, I got a few hand mittens - i almost never used them, just kept her nails filed. And she was swaddled while sleeping, so it was just never an issue. I liked having one pair to help keep her hands warm if we needed to go outside since she was born in the middle of winter. Also special shoutout to not needeing a bottle sterilizer. That (and the wipe warmer) caught me by surprise with regard to their popularity among friends. If you have access to potable water, you can sanitize over the stove in a pot. I sanitized all of my daughter's items one time upon purchase and haven't redone it since. No issues because I hand wash everything after use with hot water and soap. It does the job. ❤

As a mom of two and one on the way, I just want to say that this is a fantastic list! I literally didn’t use almost everything on this list. I didn’t make a nursery for either of my kids until they were at least a few months old. I do have a spectra breast pump, but insurance covered it so I didn’t buy it. The Hakka is magic anyway and the best pump out there. I didn’t use a swing for my first, but my second lived in it for the first few months, so that was baby preference, definitely not essential though. There’s so many things marketed to moms that just aren’t essential and your life will seriously dictate what you need. That will be different for every person and you’ll figure out as life goes on, but if I’m being honest, pretty much most everything on your list you’ll probably never need anyway.

I'm a first time mom and due in sept! Loved this. I won't be buying any of these either! We live in a small house and we simply don't have the room for these items. I have found that most baby stuff is overpriced and you'll only use for a few months. I can't justify spending the money or taking up that space. I would also add a bassinet to this list. We're doing a mini crib in our room, no need to also have a bassinet.

As a mom of 4 totally agree with you on this list. Our favorite Bouncer is the bjorn and it is fantastic so no need for a swing. I have a double pump, but only because we had it covered by insurance. My essentials. Ring sling, baby clothes, muslin blankets, diapers and wipes, binkys, bottles, nursing bras, nursing pads, baby Bjorne, snuggle me organic, pack n play, car seat, baby seat for tub, baby wash, baby lotion, diaper rash cream, gas drops, gripe water, hakaa. That’s it:)

I love my boon rack for pump parts to dry. My bottles dried in the dish washer but all those little parts worked so well on the grass. A double pump is essential to me though because I will be going back to work full time around 6 weeks. We cloth diaper so I've always just done an open garbage can and it worked great. We didn't put a bag in it and just dumped in wash. Oddly it not being closed kept smells away. I also never used a nail file or clippers. Their nails are so thin I always used my teeth to trim while nursing. I know it sounds gross but it's so easy and no worries of injuries

This is a great list! Our baby turned 6 months yesterday and I agree with basically all of these! The only one might be the Boon grass drying rack. I thought "this is so silly to buy!" But I was given a used one from my sister in law and it has been very helpful. But a regular dish drying rack might work well too!

A lot of things are not essentials or must haves but rather nice to have. Most do make your life easier and I do find value in that. Definitely wait before buying stuff you might not end up using. I mean you can always go to the store or order online and I have them within 48 hours. I ended up getting stuff I didn't use or thought I'll use but then after 1-2 times I put them aside.

I gave birth to my son last June and I went through the same thought process when it came to narrowing down our baby prep to only the essentials. We did a guest room-nursery combo (“guestery”). We skipped all of the same things! We did end up buying a bottle warmer because the hot water in a cup method takes forever and I wanted to be sure my breast milk wasn’t going to get over heated. 100% agree on skipping non-essential items. I loved my Hakka! I even bought a second one, and honestly, the scratch mittens do not stay on babes.

Such a great list! The only thing I disagree with is the swing. For me, it was the best investment. All 3 of my kiddos loved it and it gave me so much time to get things done :)

I agree with the list. I definitely learned so much from my first pregnancy, what and what not to buy. But the one i will keep on my list is the diaper genie. I just cant imagine going out to the big trash and throw a diaper especially in the middle of the night...multiple times. Mostly for convenience and to contain the smell 😊

As amum of one and another on the way I can literally say i used none of these, i live in ireland and never used my pump at all, Haaka was my main point of milk collection... Its amazing how much crap people buy that never gets used its so wasteful and expensive... You literally can be as minimal as you want ❤️

We think alike =) I'm a first-time mom-to-be as well, and it's so overwhelming all the "essential" things we are bombarded with. I'm also not getting most of those things. I added a dresser to our guest bedroom to put baby things, but other than that baby will be with us in our bedroom and won't have a nursery until we potentially move next year. I did get a nice double breast because I plan on going back to work after 3 1/2 months, but my insurance paid for it, which was nice. I also got a baby bottle warmer because I got a great discount for it and plan on using it to unfreeze baby food as well once the baby starts eating solids since I plan on making and freezing my own baby food. Oh, I also added a wipe warmer to my baby shower registry just because my baby will be born during the pick of winter and it could be nice, but if nobody gifts it to me I won't spend money on it.

I'm expecting my second baby and I totally agree with your list! I didn't use any of the items with my first but I was also exclusively breastfeeding so I didn't even need a bunch of bottles, I only got 2 just in case. Since I have all my essentials already I decided to try a swing with this baby, it's definitely not necessary though.

I'm 6 months late to this video so I'm sure this mom did absolutely fine hehe, but for any new moms I just wanted to put this out there. I work in a daycare and I would highly recommend getting a crib with wheels!! I love love love them. Being able to easily change where baby sleeps as well as place the baby in there and rock them gently with the wheels is awesome.

If you are breastfeeding and using breast milk in bottles then it is sufficient to use warm soapy water to clean, however if you are using formula the bottles need to be sterilised due to bacteria growth from the formula. This is my understanding anyway!

Thank you for this video. I understand, we will all do what we wish for in the end and it is ok. We are free to choose, but some things just hurt my intelligence.. over all of the items, I was thinking how spoiled we become, and I see that trough little things.. it makes me wonder how we or generation before us and that before even survived. I belive companies helped us to believe we need all of those things but actually we don’t. Not necessarily. Especially in those first days and months we just need our healthy baby and baby need us. So thank you. ❤️

Yes omg, Someone that thought exactly like me. Everything you said was totally accurate. You surprised me for a 1st time mom. Im a 4th time mom and this is exactly how most of us reasonable moms thinks at this stage. 😂You did an awesome job MOM👏🏾! For the breast pump, wish i would of found you last year, but most hospitals provide you with a free pump that can be provided through your insurance. -Great Job Overall!

I’m a first time mom too. And one of my patients who I’m seeing postpartum recommended me to have a wipe warmer especially because I’m expected to give birth at during winter time. She said her baby was fuzzy during diaper changes when she realized it was because of the cold wipes. I didn’t purchase it since it was gifted to me from my registry. We’ll see if I’m really gonna use it 😅

I will be cloth nappying by baby so I'm just going to get a metal bin from IKEA and a reusable bin liner. I will be using cloth wipe and hot water from the tap will warm them when I went them. You can just cut the baby's nails.

Because if you lay a bottle on a towel the inside stays went and moisture gets basically locked inside it where as a mat allows the bottle to completely dry since the opening isn’t pushed against a towel

you certainly do not "need" a nursery.... I have 2 babies now (one born in 2020, this last one born in Nov) and have never had a nursery for either of them. Frankly, we bed share, so I didnt even put a crib together until my first was 9 months old or so (crib was preferable to bed sharing once I got pregnant again...little guy likes to climb all over me when we sleep!) and the crib was literally off the bedroom in this large closet-like room that was connected to my bedroom (so, no door). I used a changing table, but only bc I cloth diapered and liked having a place to put all my inserts out where I could see them. I have never used any of those "monitoring" devices (like the owlet sock) bc my babies have always slept so close to me (mothers sleeping next to their babies literally helps to regulate their babies! we dont need technology to do what mother nature has already designed for us, in my opinion). I used a manual pump, but have gotten by without...never had a fancy electric pump. Certainly dont need a baby swing or bouncer, especially if you opt to baby wear--newborns want to be held, after all, like all the time. I have found with my mothering experience these last 2 years, you don't actually "need" all the things that people think you need for a baby. All baby needs: mom, diapers, food (if breastfeeding...food comes with mom lol... And, if you opt to do elimination communication, diapers are also up for debate as far as "necessity" goes lol)... I did like having scratch mittens, tho hahaha we did use socks at first when we started to see our first baby scratch his face haha

I won’t be purchasing a sterilizer or drying rack, when doing research sterilizing is really pointless. Breast don’t get sterilized, but I will sterilize brand new bottles so they don’t have store Bacteria. Also will not allow baby to be swaddled, even in hospital, I want to encourage his natural sleep jump reflexes.
