Makowiec I would call Polish holiday sweet bread. It is a classic Polish cake that is commonly served around Christmas time. And it is delicious. I hope you enjoy!

Ingredients:
3 teaspoons active dry yeast
3/4 cup sugar
1 pinch salt
1 cup milk, warmed
4 cups flour 600 grams ( may need a bit more)
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup butter, melted
Poppy seed filling around 800 grams
1/2 cup of Icing sugar
1 tbs of Lemon juice
1 egg for an egg wash
Some Sliced almonds
Instructions:
Dissolve the yeast in the milk. Let it stand for 5 minutes.
Separate your eggs, Set two egg whites aside for the poppy filling.
After around 5 minutes, add to your mixer bowl milk/yeast mixture, your eggs (1 full and 2 egg yolks) and then add remaining ingredients. Mix well with a dough hook to obtain a smooth dough.
Cover and allow to rise for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Beat your two egg whites to stiff picks and mix with your poppy seed filling.
Grease 2 loaf pans and line with a parchment paper.
Divide dough into 2 parts. Work with one section at time. Roll the dough wide as your loaf pan is.
Spread your poppy seed filling over the dough. Fold the sides and roll. Place it in your loaf pan seal side down.
Cover an let it rise for about 30 minutes or until in fills the loaf pan nicely.
Brush with beaten egg.
Bake in preheated oven to 180 degrees Celsius for 50 minutes.
Let it cool down completely.
Mix icing sugar with lemon juice and hot water until spreading consistency and decorate your rolls. Sprinkle with almonds.

    I used your video as the basis for my poppy seed loaf... it came out pretty good. I added a little cardamon powder in the icing with the lemon juice for a citrus/lemon flavor boost. I also used a puff pastry for the dough. Thank you for the post.

    Musialam Pani napisac! Wlasnie teraz w piekarniku mam dwa makowce zrobione wedlug pani przepisu. Pachna i wygladaja niesamowicie! Jestem bardzo zachwycona i nie moge sie doczekac jak sie upieka i jak podziele sie tymi makowcami z rodzina podczas Swiat! Dziekuje za przepis i za super video. Pozdrowienia z Kanady.     O! Zapomnialam dodac ze bardzo podoba mi sie to ze pani wytlumaczyla jak mozna to ciasto zamrozic. Mam male dzieci (6 miesiecy, 2.5 latka), i wlasnie taki przepis mi sie podoba! Jak mialam chwile czasu tydzien temu to zrobilam ciacho i zamrozilam, bo wiedzialam ze blisko Swiat bedzie za duzo zamieszania! :D

    My mother never made this but picked it up, once a year from a local bakery. We were only allowed a taste because it was considered too rich for kids. Finally I can make it and have a nice big piece! Thank you Ania!

    I used a tinned Poppy seed cake mix minus the egg white. My finished makoviec was raw in the middle. Tried cooking longer and still. Very frustrating as looked perfect from outside. Any suggestions?

    Could you list the ingredients in your description. Unfortunately too fast for me to write down. What size loaf tin did you use? Would one mix the egg whites with a ready made poppy seed mixture?

    Ania my wife has been making makowiec for the past 3 years with mixed results. We are using canned poppy seed filling. The ongoing problem is the pastry in the centre of the makowiec doesn't fully bake. The outside roll and the first inside roll is perfect but the middle is moist and doughy.

    Derek Wojtczak ok, then maybe the size is the problem, what are the amounts for her recipe? If you compare to mine is it similar? Is the oven in convec mode? I always poke it with a skewer just to be sure anyway...
