POPPER FISHING Oregon Inlet Yellowfins (You don't have to go to Panama for this!)
Most of the time, popper fishing for yellowfins is associated with traveling to fish somewhere exotic, but Oregon Inlet in North Carolina is one of the best places in the world to catch yellowfin tuna. Popper fishing is uncommon (outside of bluefin season) because most tuna caught here are on chartered trips which often have inexperienced fishermen, meaning trolling is the best approach for those captains/mates to put fish in the boat for their clients. On this trip we encountered lots of nice yellowfins, lots of casting opportunity, calm seas, and no sharks. We went on an overnight trip and caught tunas both in the evening and on the following morning after getting some sleep at the tuna grounds. The two popper setups in the video are 6500 sized Penns, one Slammer IV and one older Spinfisher that is still trucking. The Slammer is on an 8' heavy Fenwick HMG rated for 2-5oz and up to 80lb braid. The Spinfisher is on a custom rod. Both reels had 50lb braid to an 80lb fluorocarbon leader.

Thanks!! It's very challenging to grow a channel right now, but I am doing my best!
Unreal action! I don't think anything will ever beat a topwater tuna bite when it comes to fishing

Love watching all your videos! Could you start doing a super quick run down of the rod, reel and reel size in all of your videos? Thanks for the help

I can do that
Friends, I have seen your videos and they are very beautiful, I want to go fishing for Tuna and I am new here in North Carolina, do you have any coordinates that I can go to?❤❤❤❤
Nolan....love the videos and the commentary. Very helpful information. I have been on several charters out of Oregon inlet trying to catch my buck list fish of a tuna and Mahi. I am a 60 yo female and my time to do this is running out.. physically I mean. Is there a time and charter you would recommend so I can finally succeed. This is how committed I am to fishing...I get seasick...even with bonine which helps but only in recovery and Dramamine I chum... 😂 But I won't give up! I fish at home in a 18 ft boat for rock in the Chesapeake Bay when calm and the Potomac River so I am handy with a rod and tackle and I don't get sick. I know the tackle you use for these fish is way different than what I am use to so I will watch and learn. I live near Point Lookout State Park so you can see my area for catchable fish. Blues , mackerel are common. Note. I don't always get sick if calm but my last charter out of Oregon Inlet said he is the only one who can cancel a trip. He knew I was prone to seasickness but still took us out on our purchased date even though there were thunderstorms. The mates were falling down and even told to stay inside the cabin for awhile due to the storms which you guessed it put me inside and I had no chance to fight my demon. At the end of the day we finally got hooked up to a fish and the captain said cut it off I have dinner plans and that's how it ended. I swore I would never go on a charter again out of there and gave up on my dream. I fish so I know there is no guarantee you're going to catch...all I can do is go when there is the best chance and conditions and pray the fish gods shine down upon me. Do you have any guidance to steer me into the right direction Sorry so long and thank you for the content..if I can't get out there this I the next best! Tracy

May and June are the best offshore months for Oregon inlet, July is usually good too. Oregon inlet weather makes it tough as far as booking trips go because the weather is so unpredictable and typically rough, but that's why the charter fleet consists almost entirely of sportfishers. My recommendation would just be to book a trip during that timeframe (go earlier in July if you do July). Pelican seems to be the fish catching-est boat in the fleet from what I can tell, they are always in the fish. There are several boats that typically outfish the rest of the fleet, I would do some digging to make sure you book with one of them!

Try taking a dose the night before your trip and another as soon as you get up in the am.

@@hunterhepbron As far as a tuna/cobia rod it is a little heavy for the cobia side of things IMO. If you're wanting something to do both, I would say go with a heavy instead of the XH. But if you want a rod solely for popping yellowfins, it is absolutely the tool for the job! You can get it done with way less gear but I like to be able to do it quickly given the OBX shark presence.

@@nolanminor6761 yeah I gotcha. I might go with the heavy than because we do both up here in maryland. Never caught a tuna on a popper but I’ve watched this video like 10 times lol makes me want to catch one on a popper great video. Your other videos are great too keep up the good work!

8' HMG Inshore Extra Heavy I believe, maybe just "heavy". It's the heaviest rod in the HMG Inshore series
