I think the nylon one sounded better than the metal one. The metal one still had some audible little bursts. Your point about the construction of the pop filter is so true. I have had to prop up nylon pop filters with cable ties to make them stand straight.

I agree. The metal example still contains some pops. A well-made nylon pop filter might be the way to go!

I tried out both a metal and nylon filter, the only difference I noticed is that the metal one has a little bit more of a clear natural sound other than a nylon one which sounds a little bit more filtered. Both do an amazing job 👍 But if you want the best possible recording then I’d recommend a Metal filter

Very good video! Informative, succinct, and intelligently covering essential points of interest. It can become stressful to look at utube videos and suffer through the endless yapping that leaves you with very little in terms of being better educated about what you're searching for. Not so with this one. unfortunately, ppl enjoy yapping without much knowing what the point is so those videos get 100s of k of views. Glad whenever I see something different in this sense.

There's one pop filter I'd be interested to know your thoughts on, it's the Arisen metal pop filter on amazon. I think the arm isn't the best, but the overall design of it is intriguing, particularly how it will perform. I believe it's just a unit from china that can be rebranded as I've seen 1-2 others that look the same, but different name.

Looks like a cheap version of a stedman pop filter.

Nice review, Kyle. Very well done! I've always been using metal pop filters. However, I noticed that when I sing a low soft note, I can hear, post-recording, the air coming out of my mouth being reflected (or coming through the tiny holes) by the metal pop filter, which creates somewhat of an artefact to my ears. I was considering buying a nylon one for that reason. In your demo, I felt like the nylon was subtly darkening your voice. Which makes sense as the nylon has absorbing properties in the high frequencies. Did you feel that too?

I agree, Sam. The one I’m using definitely attenuated the high frequencies. However, it’s a VERY cheap nylon filter. I expect a higher quality nylon filter would be more sonically transparent. Good luck! Thanks for watching!

Is the Stedman PS101 as good as everyone says?!

Another benefit of the metal pop filter that I find is that it's more transparent, so using it in a live cover or to live stream or podcast will not hide the singer/speaker's face behind it. It is very annoying and most singers set the camera at the side of their face for visibility.

i wanna use both in a same time!

I wonder how an SE Electronics metal mesh pop filterwpuld compared to that of the Stedman.

Yes. To keep the test as fair as possible, I was off-axis about 30-degrees in either direction.

Dropped by my local music store yesterday and grabbed a metal pop filter off the shelf. It's not a Stedman, but I'm quite pleased with how well it works and I like being able to see the microphone through it as well. I have no idea why the fabric ones even exist now. Will keep me busy during this coronavirus lockdown stuff! :)

I prefer the transparency of the metal pop filter. The high frequencies seem to be attenuated through the nylon pop filter. The hardware and ease of use is MUCH better on the metal pop filter, but you can spend a little extra on a mesh pop filter to get good hardware. Thanks for watching!

The other problem with pop filters, is that they block copy if you don't position the mic properly.

Hello, why with the nylon antipop does sounds way less the low frequencies ? (is because of the microphone take audio direction (onmidirectial etc...) ? I mean I hear the breath width sounds reduced on the nylon, as it's supposse to work but it sound also way less the low frequencies ? thanks for the video

I was sure to speak toward the microphone from the same angle for both the metal and nylon tests (about +/- 30-degrees off-axis). It is a cardioid microphone. I believe the frequency response transparency is another benefit of a metal pop filter. The nylon filter blocks air, whereas the metal filter redirects air. Thanks for watching!

​@@AudioUniversity Hello ! , Wow this was long ago, I finally bought them, both, A Nady nylon and the same Stedman you use, altought I prefer the goose neck of the stedman there is something I notice pretty detailed on the metal filter: if you say ssss (or a noise type) and you move your head around the filter; it will produce is a type of comb filtering affecting the signal, (you can hear it even without microphone) this only happen on the metal version. It maybe mine cause it came a little bit bend (like a pringle but very little) but this it apparently normal and the functionality does work when we blow like you example.... Let me know if you ever experiment something like that ! and thanks for all your videos

​@@AudioUniversity I just hear them again and test them. It seems to be more noticeable to the my ears than the microphone, however it does sound on the microphone too. With the sss is very subtle, it’s way more noticeable when blowing (and long plosives although its uncommon and didn’t test with breathing) and it happen with the nylon too but it’s almost not noticeable. on the side of the microphone I notice I think only when blowing with the metal. Also, it seems to happen only when 10 cm or closer to the pop filter. I made also a white noise test with my phone, which is curious in this case it seems to be only noticeable without the filters :o I’m using the AT4040 just in case. It's a very very uncommon specific test, all this cause somehow after singing tests, I think I prefer the Nylon filter, but I’m not sure why, so I made several tests. May be I just like the plosives more attenuated. and I though the Nylon was going to attenuate more the high frequencies as some people on internet says but I find the difference pretty minimum; I put attention to that cause I like maintaining the original harmonics as much as it’s posible. It's the first microphone I ever purchased! It's a Sterling Audio ST51.

I've tested both metal and nylon pop filters, the nylon reduces the plosives and harsh "s" way better, but alters the quality of the sound. It makes it kinda muddy, as oppose to the metal one that keeps a more true and natural sound. Maybe i've just had a bad nylon pop filter but that was the conclusion i got off of the tests. You can get the job done with any pop filter, depends on what you are lookin for

@Bextra exactly my experience bro their is way more sibilance with the metal one because it’s thin and clear vs a thick nylon pop filter. I like the metal one more I just try to make sure to not get too close to the mic

So straightforward, and so amazingly simple!!! Like, in voice acting, it would seem as though metal would be best for the dramatic or action and more movement based bits (or instances where more crisp and clear dialogue among the din of ambient sound)... Likewise, a soft-spoken podcast or audiobook would probably benefit more from a mesh one... 🤷🏽‍♀️? Idk. Any thoughts?

Without a doubt pop filters look nice but i think they are useless when proper mic technique is employed. Have used a Metal one and it does create some type of airy tinny noise that is a problem in post another gent from a very famous audio store said that you clean em and are ready to go? The spit goes right thru and into the U87 or U47 Capsule. The nylon one reduces the signal by almost 6db so I think it's understanding the polar pattern and then proper mic technique to no get pops , hissing and other unwanted noises. Great video by the way.

Aquarium filter pad FTW. Proper mic techniques and proper microphone placement solves a lot of problems but ROOM TREATMENT can knock down a lot of major sound problems like sound reflections.

Not gonna lie, I feel like the nylon one did a better job. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Very crisp.

IME: Metal seems more sensitive, thusly more care must be placed, to the placement of the PF in relation to the capsule/diaphragm. I’ve taken to using two... both metal, but one smaller one directly in front of the capsule and then one farther in proximity to allow artists to “eat the grill” if need be. Of course all depends on the singer and microphone. Side note! If you find you have excessive sibilance but like the mic character you can rubber band a pencil directly on-axis to the capsule either on the mic body or the pop filter. It’s a “before de-essers” were invented trick. (Of course mic placement trumps all of these but... I digress.)
