Pregorexia is when moms to be obsess over their weight and diet and exercise so much so that they may put the health of a baby in jeopardy. In essence, they are pregnant and anorexic. Some argue that Pregorexia was created by celebrities who seem to gain minimal weight while pregnant and are quick to bounce back to their pre-baby weight, if not even smaller. This is a serious problem as there are numerous health risks to the mom and to the baby.
How can we avoid this when we buy these magazines, surf celebrity blogs and follow the every move of our favourite celebrities? The reason why pregorexia is becoming such a fixed image in popular culture is because of the influence of these skinny celebrities. We see their before birth and the day after and they look super human. They fit right back into that skinny pair of jeans or perfect little black dress (LBD).
The scary thing here is that besides the distinct possibility of affecting the fetus and post-baby birth, children see this and may want to emulate their parents eating habits/physical activities. What we have now is a culture obsessed with thinness and being part of this ideal. What we do not want and should not aim for is an unhealthy image and message to young boys and girls that in order to be happy and have friends, you have to be skinny at all costs.
