We live in the Ozarks today in a nice air conditioned house that is waterproof, heated, and bug free. Looking at these pictures and knowing the tick and chigger climate here, I can't imagine the discomfort of living with no screens. And having been raised with the fertile black dirt of western Kansas I can't imagine being able to grow anything in these rocky hills of Northwest Arkansas that would support a family. With that said, our place near Garfield has old barb wire embedded half way through the trees that tell me some of the old timers were raising something (goats or cattle) on this hard scrabble land. What a great piece of history. Thanks.

I love hearing that great woman’s voice leading Arkansas! She is THE Governor I support in this country…makes me want to jump the border from Oklahoma to Arkansas for real real! ❤

Look how shiny the little girl’s hair was. My dad said he and his four siblings were always clean despite no water or luxuries in their poor 1920’s Ozark home. My grandmother was very ill and the doctor said she needed food.

My family is from NW Arkansas and the pictures looked exactly like some I've seen. Although my great-grandfather had left the state for work by the 30s. They didn't return until the 60's I believe. There's still a lot of them in Searcy and Boone county.

In WA State twenty years ago, before I came down to Arkansas, where i had lived as a child, a woman in a coffee shop of smug pseudointellectuals said to me, "Arkansas! Where will you plug in your computer?" Another person said, "Have you seen the movie Deliverance?" And still another said, "Arkansas! Where's that?"

Such ignorant commentary. Of course, the ladies knew how to sit properly. They were poor not barn animals. My great-grandmother was born in Newton county, Arkansas in 1907. They were very poor, so poor that the children did not wear shoes in the summer because they simply couldn't afford them. I suppose the family discussed here was so poor that the mothers didn't wear shoes in the summer either. However, the families in that area attended church and sent their children to school. I can assure you they knew how to act properly.
