Poor Man's Root Cellar 2.0

Last year I had so many fermented pickles that I had to bury them until it got cold enough to store them in my garage, and this year is no different. Have a watch as I try a new method of the "poor man's root cellar!

    I have friends who use metal trash cans as root cellars, they bury them to just below the lid.

    Plastic lids with silicon seals won't rust on. Still airtight like the metal lids are, as long as its the kind with detachable silicon seal. I use these for ferments and dry storage with my large jars. Saves metal lids for canning.

    You can use plastic PVC pipe and attached to the drip hold in the end side.

    It would be interesting to put one of those wireless temperature modules in the ice chest to monitor the temp this winter.

    Greg, you are a source of entertainment and education in our house. You are our first "go-to" when we want to learn something cheap, good and fast. I have been scrounging coolers for a while now. I would LOVE a walk in root cellar but when the zombies come, your method is far better, lol. We speak of "Greg" as if you live next door. Wish you were!     Thanks Tamara. I have to do a follow up video this year - I'm now using our old (7 year old) fridge. It started falling apart on the insode - the plastics were cracking - and the freezer part of it died - but it still works and maintains 5 deg C; so now it is our coldroom.

    Very innovative!! I'm going to try to make one out of some 4" thick foam wall board and some water sealed concrete, so I can pick the dimensions. Thinking about cedar chest sized. Great Video!!

    Love it! One of my problems this year was a bumper crop of cukes to pickle and not enough storage room after fermenting. I ended up having to feed the pigs them because we couldn't eat them fast enough. At least some of the guilt is alleviated knowing it went towards bacon, lol. I will have to try this until we can manage putting in a root cellar. Thanks, Greg!

    There are videos online of burying an old freezer into a slope & using it for a root cellar or... when the SHTF day for a hidden cache of food.

    Trust me - I've been on the look out for that very thing! This is a very simple version of that but yes - that's the best option IMO!

    I found an old, free small freezer, but now to get the help to remove the motor, dig the hole... or is it to convince 'helpers' the value of this project? This video showed putting a slice of foam insulation over the freezer top, then plywood/straw. Would that help your box? Me thinks your maritime location might be a bit warmer than Lubec due to the Gulf Stream, but almost similar?

    TY for shearing. 2:38 Hah.. I love fermented pickles. Will bears dig something like this up ? I'm thinking about making ice with freezer and doing this for an off grid refrigerator to save on electricity bill. I will be digging a bit deeper and putting some tip of lid over the hole.

    I think they will only dig it up if they smell something or have a good reason. Black bears walk right past this spot all the time - they have never dug anything up.

    @@maritimegardening4887 TY for replying. I only ask as I was thinking about makin similar project for an ice chest with ice blokes for a small refrigerator replacement to save on electric bill. I'm thinking about using cement sheetrock for a ground lid. I only have egg's, pickled/fermented items, chess, cabbage and leftovers I use a refrigerator for.

    instead of re-covering with dirt, do you think a couple straw or hay bales from the feed store, set on top would work? then it would be less work to uncover later....

    Yes that woudl work - but the feed store is an hour's drive from here so this was easier

    One of my favorite sauces for kale is the Chinese black bean sauce, a fermented black soybean with lots of garlic in it. Miso is fermented, too. I'd love to learn t make that black bean sauce because sauces in small jars are so expensive right now - $4 to $6.

    Sour pickles did not go over well here, no offense, I DID everything you suggested but everyone said they tasted rotten... I have no comment I didn't taste them. I have an open pallet > sushi, raw deer hearts, mountain oysters, chittlings, I don't what I did wrong..! probably nothing.. Glad you all enjoy them !

    Well it's possible that no one in your house likes fermented pickles. Or you did something wrong. With only one attempt, who knows - perhaps you should have tried them for yourself?

    Boy sounds like it! Did you have them in the dark when they were fermenting? Did you use tap water?

    I boiled my well water. (which is very high in iron like most of NE New England) They sat on the counter for 5 days at about 63-68 degrees F. I used one of those curly-cew gas relief valves.

    Why didn’t you just use the blue plastic tote with a lid on it instead of a cooler would’ve been easy to put a vent in that and drain holes

    Wow! How many cuke plants was all that from? Mine are anemic, but I'm working on composting. Do you have a favorite variety? I want a root cellar also, eventually.

    Thank you! Now I know about how many for next year. I did 4 this year in a container. It's not near enough, and they even once got bitter because I didn't water enough. Next year I'll have more compost and a bigger garden. "Kirby" is the variety I keep reading about in recipes.

    @@maritimegardening4887 i think osyfen/air getting to the metal helps hasten rus, so at least the inside of the lid would rust less if you put them in upside down - i think

    OH and while were on topic.. What pickle do you use ? I took a took a chance a parisian pickle from Seed Exchange and it was a disaster! I planted maybe 75 (from seed) plants and ended with maybe 30 cukes, so disappointed.
