Poor man crank polisher

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Connor and I discover the crankshaft isn't scored as much as it has bearing transfer. the metal from the bearings lightly fused to the crank. So in true country boy manner we polish it.

You have to use an oil lubricant when you polish a crankshaft or camshaft using sandpaper with 320 Grit without any type of oil you're going to mess up your crankshaft

Hi Kentbarger, thanks for watching. So far I am optimistic, of course we haven't started it yet. . Mainly with the crank we were taking off fused bearing material. We did do it dry and we changed paper a lot because it plugged with the bearing metals. I guess we are at the point where it will work or it won't. starting to put it back together so subscribe and hit the bell to see what happens.

You can polish it up without lubricant but you"d have to go up to 1000 grit

You can scrape aluminum off of a crank journal with a hard steel razor? A good crank polish is about 65 bucks. Spend the money where it counts.

Nice. I have a V-6 crankshaft in the bottom of a Nissan 3.3L VG33E long block, from my 1998 Pathfinder, 166,000 miles. Very clean and owned by an elderly couple since new. Oil pan is off. Block is sitting on its top in a tire giving me access to crank. It is a spare motor. It was having rod and/or main bearing knock. I found shavings in oil and filter. It had been oil starved from previous owner, due to a leak they didn't notice. First I had moonlighting mechanic try to refresh bearings. Nothing changed. I'm not sure he did it well. I had it pulled out and replaced with used motor. I want to restore the crank, flush motor with cheap vegetable oil and then diesel and put it back in. Any suggestions? My first time doing any motor block repair. Thanks!

My guess is it pounded the crank. It only takes a couple 1/1000ths to make it un-runable. I'm not familiar with that particular engine and what the common wear items are and how many miles they run before things like rings, timing chains and valvetrain, oil pumps, cams etc.. wear out. So I can't advise on if its worth fixing or not. You should probably take the crank to a machine shop and have them mic it out and turn it down if possible. then get the bearings to that spec ( have the shop order them) get a new oil pump too and re-install it using the manufacturer recommended procedure. Its always a crap shoot. Thanks for commenting!!!! John

My 327 broke oil pump. Ran for few minutes without oil. My conn rod journals slightly discolored. Cannot feel any transfer. Do you think I’m ok to replace the oil pump and run it.

  • @JohnFrytag

Hey Honest Abe; Couldn't say for sure. The discoloration probably means heat. If the motor is out I would defiantly pull the crank and send it out. 327 is known for high reving and that is the killer if anything is just slightly out of spec. If its in the car I would see if I could clean it up and put in new bearings plastigage it and see what happens. As long as its not a rare valuable numbers matching motor and car. Then I wouldn't risk it pull the motor and send it out. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching. John P.S. Part of the reason we did this is to see if we could "get away with it". And we still haven't seen yet.

My dear, after this smart polishing, all the diameters of this crankshaft have shrunk a little bit, right? When new bearings are fitted, the clearance may be at the limit or slightly beyond tolerances. I don't think that's good. Would there be intermediate bearings for the clearances to be kept to a minimum or would the friend use some resource (people do some tricks, but... ) to reduce the clearances? Greetings from Brazil.

  • @samrothstein9716

There's plenty of machine shops that do it this way when it just needs a quick clean up and doesn't need to be cut. This method doesn't remove any measurable amount of material from the actual journal. Just because it doesn't go to a shop and cost money doesn't mean it isn't the right way.

@@Jv19979 Greetings. You want to say .25mm? I think this kind of bearing assembly depends a lot ... if the guy wants to do a simple / cheap service worth installing the bearings with some clearance. If the desire is to do a perfect service, then it is best to install with ideal clearances, but as I posted, it depends on several factors.
