Poop to Power: How a Florida dairy farm turns cow manure into electricity

Ғылым және технология

Fox 13 in Tampa tells the story of how Alliance Dairies near Trenton, Florida converts manure from their dairy cows into electricity for their farm and neighbors using a methane digester. In addition to creating electricity, this methane digester can create a byproduct that can be used as peat for potted plants, bedding for the cows and other sustainable practices. This is just some of the ways dairy farmers are the ultimate recyclers.

A methane digester is a great idea and more farms should consider it. Love the idea of being self contained and not relying on the grid and staying clean in the meantime.

This needs to spread to every Dairy every feedlot every chicken farm every turkey farm and every other animal operation in the country if this can be fully implemented at every single farm that produces animal waste it can pretty much solve the energy crisis

I love this video. I use it to teach my students about "clean" energy.

Incredible! What do we use our human poop for in the western world? Ideas like this should be used on a larger scale. Most diseases around the world are caused by the poor handling of poop. If we can digest it, and recover cooking gas at the other end, what is the downside? Well done Mr Engineer. Do you build this for people who are interested?

I think this is a lovely idea and I wonder if it would be feasible to use the same principle on goat and sheep waste.

The heating value and amount would need to be sufficient to generate any significant amount of power. We ran a similar operation in Southern California, but the cost of scrubbing H2S from the methane and having a sufficient and steady supply to generate enough power is a difficult problem.

This is a good idea provided you have a stable fuel platform and can scrub the Hydrogen Sulfides. If you're only generating a small amount then you will be ok. but if you plan to power 2800kw or so then you may have to blend natural gas de-rated. You will be looking at the heating value of the methane around 600btu/ft^3 .

methane biodigester booster - use Kudzu Plants which are known for creating excessive amounts of methane when cows eat this plant; hence, Kudzu Plants would boost the biodigester's gas production and might qualify for grants since Kudzu is a problem weed in 25 states. So make gas and liquid fuels our of it
