Be aware that adding a 'shock' that contains stabilized chlorine can eventually cause issues. Stabilized chlorine (dichlor, trichlor, etc) is designed to combat the destruction of free chlorine by the sun (as you mentioned) using cynuric acid. If you constantly increase your cyanuric acid levels, eventually you can get to the point where the chlorine you add is 'locked' and ineffective. Powdered shock that you buy should be 'calcium hypochlorite' without any stabilizing ingredients. Liquid chlorine is sodium hypochlorite and works great in any scenario

I switched to the granular when I noticed how much higher the % of active chemicals were. Liquid is great but if you look at what’s in it, it’s mostly water, hence being cheaper.

This is incorrect because you're comparing apples to oranges. The true chlorine content of one is a 10% of a gallon and one 70% of a pound, 70 seems high, right? But it's not because the liquid is 8.5 lbs/gal. You would need about 1.2 lbs of dry shock to equal the exact same chlorine contribution as 1 gallon of 10% pool chlorine. So even though the liquid chlorine costs less ($5.44/gal at Walmart now) compared to dry shock ($6/lb almost everywhere), liquid is still more potent. Dry shock is lighter though, if you don't care how much money you spend and you don't mind spending time premixing in a bucket then carrying a very heavy bucket of water+shock all around the edge of your pool.

If you "shock" your pool once a week, you are wasting a lot of money. You should run your pool on tablet chlorine(Trichloro-S-Triazinetrione) which is stabilized(protects from the sun) and is the best and strongest form of chlorine. "Shocking" your pool is a process required only a few times a summer, if at all. There are a lot of good videos on KZread to explain what shocking truly is and when it needs to be done. I have and do currently manage millions of gallons of pool water and if I "shocked" my pools once a week, I probably would have wasted a couple of hundred thousand dollars over the last 30 years. As much as chlorine costs right now, I hate to see people throw their money away. If you need to add powder or liquid chlorine every week to keep your chlorine where it needs to be, then you need to figure out how to use tablets correctly. Your pool will be cleaner, more stable and cheaper to run.

Are you in an area with very heavy rain to dilute all the cyanuric acid you're adding with Trichlor? Most pool pros do NOT agree with you that Trichlor is the best, since CYA levels tend to skyrocket which then makes your chlorine lose it's ability to kill algae & bacteria.
