Speaking another language is hard, yes. But I mean, (voice) actors are actually the ones being cast for their language skills. Not just emotional expression, but also specific accents.

They should've given Pony a heavy Southern accent when she's annoyed, it would've made more sense since she's supposedly from Texas. It would've been a more fun way for why people couldn't understand her, as well as a bit more natural.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I've met people that normally speak with a general American accent, and then when they're stressed or excited it becomes VERY obvious they're from the South.

Many people thought they should've made her accent more pronounced. So it would go from English to southern. Personally I prefer that, because in the dub its not like she's no longer from the U.S.

Actually, that's not how it works. His arms decrease in strength the more he makes. Same for any other amount of limbs.

Juzo's voice actor's English is actually really good. He doesn't sound 100% native, but you can tell what he's saying without subtitles. And by that, I don't mean "ok, a little comprehensible" by some people. By the way, what is Pony saying in the Eng dub with the first scene?

I feel like if a character is from a specific place with a different language, the main thing you should look for in casting is that they're from that country too and if that's not possible, the bare minimum is they're fluent enough. No offence to the actress, this is just a casting problem and I know for fact the same thing would be judged if this wasn't anime (Or hell, even if it was live action)

At least with the japanese dub the scene isnt lost with the dub. But yeah I agree it would have been better if they could have gotten a va who was both fluent in japanese and english.

You just gotta love a Japanese speaker trying to speak English with a American southern accent, so you have three different accents vying for the main one. It's awesome.

My biggest pet peeve! Surely there are fluent Enlgish speakers in Japan. Is it really hard to find them, specially for a small role?

There are but not many. Not many Japanese voice actors take english training. Plus pony is a minor character and no anime production is gonna pay extra for for a one off battle and a few lines. The va tried at least. Though im guessing juzo's va had english training and unintentionally made tit more obvious

Actually there are 3 female voice actors fluent in English. Like you can understand them English. But they don't have the super high pitched anime girl voice, which sucks because you would think they would teach Japanese VA to range their voice that way, bc if they did it would make much more sense.

I wish we got this kind of dub for MHA; it’s really well done how you mix the dub and sub parts to make Pony’s speech more natural.

I know finding a native English speaker that can voice act in Japanese might be difficult to find. But anime has so many, foreigners who are supposed to be American/Australian/British/etc natives, but their Japanese va just can't speak English without it being heavy Engrish. It kinda turns the image.

Ironic how pony can't speak a lick of English meanwhile Jiro's speech is perfect

I know English is hard for Japanese people but they could've at least hired someone who was bilingual. Or at least hired someone who could teach the Japanese VA the English lines and pronunciation. They 100% got the money for it.

They honestly should have just recorded pony’s dub first and then sent it to Japan to just use as her English voice. Would have made a lot more sense and actually made her feel American instead of just trying to get a Japanese voice actor to speak English and in an American accent at that.

I personally feel like they should’ve chosen an English voice actor to do all of Pony’s lines. If she’s a foreigner she shouldn’t know fluent Japanese and her English certainly shouldn’t be difficult for a native English speaker to understand

I'll be honest. I had to rewind pony's dialoge several times as it just didn't sound coherent at all. Juzo V.A nailed it quite execeptionally, kinda wished they hired an english V.A to do her English-speaking lines. More specifically a southern accent

I’m so surprised that so many people are actually not defending this, because like.... the heavy Japanese accent in Pony’s English has become a staple for just about any English representation since anime studios tend to still stick with their guns and hire Japanese voice actors for English speaking roles. I’m not saying that just because it’s a common practice that it’s worth defending, but I’ve always thought the general community found these instances to be funny. I had to rewind to catch what Pony was saying at times, but I’ve always found these moments in anime to be very funny and I’ve come to treasure them whenever they pop up. It’s one of those moments that makes me smile just about as much as All-Might. If Pony played a larger role, sure I suppose...

Bruh…you are EXACTLY right…if Pony spoke perfect English this wouldn’t make any sense, but with her Engrish and the close, but not perfect word choices makes this scene incredibly hilarious, which is the point! It is in stark contrast to seriousness of the match and the show, while great, is not taking it so seriously that we can’t get a great laugh in on the way. I mean hear how quirky her voice is with her character design, it screams that this isn’t serious and is meant for laughs, and it works! Most folks have looked way too into this and simply didn’t take it at face value.
