Pontiac Firebird Trans Am commercial (1986)

Ойын-сауық

An American television commercial advertising the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am circa 1986. This is my favorite Trans Am advertisement of all time!

That's a mood. The rockers are fantastic, they give off a sparkle like they're chrome even though i think that's just paint (it has been on every car i've seen in person). I love it.

This was the first new car I ever bought, and I think about it lovingly to this day. The only problem I ever had with it was it was stolen 3 times. (Twice totally stripped, one time I got it back.) I live just outside Detroit, (think of the movie 8 Mile, plus 2 more miles,) so I guess it was almost to be expected. If I ever win the lottery, it is at the top of the long list of cars that will be in the garage.

I agree this is the ULTIMATE Firebird commercial! But there was actually a slightly longer version. It ran during USA Channel's 'Up All Night' Movie( I think the movie was titled 'Wrong Side of the Road' )but in any case--the version that aired had a prolonged sequence of the car accelerating in the tunnel. I refused to erase the VHS tape just to hang on to the commercial! :D Thanks for posting the video.

Forget about the build quality of these cars (which I know were not the standard of the time, and built out from the Van Nuys assembly line auto analyst Maryanne Keller said was a textbook example of GM's ills then). These Pontiac commercials embodied one aspect of the upbeat mid-late 1980s USA that I miss. I'm sure many old enough folks would say those days in America were a lot better (even with leaking T-Tops, creaks, etc.) than the uncertain times of today.

@charlie479 It's like Spyker, After a few years maybe Pontiac will return, because lots of people like Pontiac cars. Opel/ Vauxhall fused with Buick. If Pontiac would be fused with a Japanese or European Concern, that would be cool and funny to see. I hope the first "New Pontiac" model will be a Trans Am, with a small number of KITT Limited Editions, haha.

Firebirds were corporate cars from day one...that's why they were cheap. The 1st gens shared the exact same base and most body panels and interior components, the 2nd gens had more specific parts but still shared most of the same bits. Only the engines and transmission were really different. Third gens shared the same exact engines that's true, but still had many different parts. Same for the 4th gens. Firebirds have always been upscaled Camaros.

@nyydwall unless you had a corvette, or a grand national, these cars were considered fast back in there time, since they did have a bunch of torque with the tune port motors, and 87 with the 350s and only went up in horsepower each yr til 92. So they weren't that horrible.

For all the distancing GM wanted from Knight Rider they sure used it to their advantage in this commercial! They claimed to many people thought a Trans Am could do all the show showed and they felt it was a liability. Now they have no problem portraying the Camaro as a transforming alien robot! I'm sure they would have sold millions of "KITT" editions back in the day!

I own a 91 T/A, the only thing i hate about the interior was the center console. it was a poor design, but as for the rest of the interior, as it maybe a little raddle hear and there, my interior is still original and solid. No sagging, plastic door piece is straight, dash pad is still perfect. When they cars get parked in the sun everyday it loosens up the center console and they come apart. that i agree was a very crappy way of making it. The 82-84 bolt in was better than the glue piece 85-92

@3800fiero 20HP to do a burnout? I think more goes into it than that...I had a 1995 T-bird 3.8 V6 with 140HP, that car could not do a burnout for the life of it...every now or then it might squeal the tires a tad..., but I'd have to hold the brake down to get the tires spinning. 190HP was good for a 0-60 time of 8.0 seconds, most modern day 4 cylinder cars are about that fast...190HP was okay for the time, but over all not too fast.

I hate to burst anyone's nostalgia bubble, but... I'm 43 years old and have worked as an auto mechanic in some capacity for half of those, including several GM dealerships, so I have a fair amount of knowledge and experience concerning these cars. Yes, the Trans Am and Formula models with the 5.0 and 5.7 liter tuned port V8s were fast, and their handling and roadholding was excellent- especially with the optional WS6 suspension. HOWEVER- their build quality was absolutely hideous. Just awful.
