Lyrics is not a problem. GV Prakash music in Ayirathil oruvan has more authentincity and goosebumps than ARR music in this film. Music is good but it just like any modern movie music.

Blue sattai review is absolutely true. Movie was disastrous. Acting and dialogue delivery were much below par. None of the actors were able to act even upto their normal levels. Not even a single song stayed in the mind and so is the BGM. No Grandeur anywhere. The drama set of Ponniyin Selvam a few years back had a much better set up. Only money that they spent was for Actors salary and promotion. Hardly anything in the movie.

Very disappointed with PS I. Youngsters who never read this book will think the 5 volumes are only about war , war , war and Nandini. In the book we look at even Nandini as a chaste Tamil woman, though she marries an old man. Karikalan demanded a certain respect in the book. But here Vikram reminded me of Anniyan Vikram only. Ponniykn Selvan’s entry in the book gave thrills, but not in the movie

This is probably one of the honest reviews of PS that I have come across. As a person who grew up reading and re-reading all of Kalki’s works and especially PS more than a dozen times, I can say Mani Ratnam’s adaptation does not do justice to this epic. These are the problems I found in the movie- 1. Age of the actors playing the parts . Aditha Karikalan was around 27-29 yrs old when he was assassinated. Vanthiyadeven , Kundavai, Nandini (fictional) etc. were supposed to be around the same age or younger. Why were actors twice the age cast for these parts ? They look so old! 2. We all idolized Arulmozhi varman. I had try so hard to stop looking at the man boobs and paunch of the actor who played the part. 3. The dialogues were so pedestrian. The scenes were so hurried and disjointed. Touching all the plot points does not translate to a great screen play. I agree that adapting a 5 part novel to a movie is no easy feat but, there have been some directors and movies that have managed to do this without butchering the spirit and the soul of the book. Example- Sense and sensibility ( Ang Lee) , Life of PI(Ang Lee) and Prisoner of Azkaban. 4. Expect Alai kadalum song . The rest were very ordinary . What is with the song ponni nadi ? Is the singer /MD too lazy to pronounce tamizh words properly? When I read the books I laughed , cried , was thrilled and felt proud of my heritage and tamizh language. While watching the movie , all I did was look at my watch constantly and asked myself “Is this movie over ?” The problem is we Indians and Tamilians are so accustomed to substandard things that even a mediocre effort seems great. So before people troll Maran’s review, May I suggest the trollers to take the trouble to read Kalki’s PS at least a 2-3 times and honestly ask yourself , did MR’s movie do justice to Kalki’s work ? Selaperu “Oora vittu odi polama” madiri padam mattum than edukkanum!

It was very clear from the teaser/trailer/songs that Maniratnam and ARR were going to completely ruin the original novel. Maniratnam made a very half baked attempt, his purpose was to make a quick buck. Guy has got his retirement fund. That’s all.

My problem with most of songs is that many of the sounds are alien to the time period. The percussion, strings etc were 900AD ? . The sounds were more middle eastern. I wonder why 🤔? devaralan attam is a kuravai attam according to Kalki’s description. In the movie it looked like a dance from West Bengal for Kali mixed with characters from King Kong’s Kong island ! Also, what’s with opening for this song dum dum dumare? Dumare is a tamizh word?

Problem with Ponniyin Selvan is that there are so many characters and each character is important and needs a story buildup. A justfied attempt would actually be a series with 8-10 episodes with each episode the length of Chernobyl or Sherlock.

The Real problem is Manirathnam MBA is PURELY about business. I watched it..and am Still Thinking which ONE scene had Tamil flavour or culture depicted.. But one thing he succeeded; Use intense promotions to Fool and created Initial buzz..BUT I think the Truth is SLOWLY being felt now.

I am born in the 90s and a great fan of Tamil novels nd had never read PS cos I didn't get the time and was regretting for many years..When all this hype around PS movie rose..couldn't control myself anymore and took a break from my work to read it day and night and completed the novel by 3 weeks..I understand reading can give you rocket high imaginations and it's their perspective.. Wanted to watch the movie only in IMAX waited for few weeks as I had huge huge expectations.. Really felt disappointed to the core and slept in the second half..I couldn't connect with the novel anywhere in the movie..I have read it just for one time and it has given me a mammoth of imagination..Maniratnam who claims that this book is his love and a lifetime dream should have read it atleast more than once..I dont understand why he took too much of liberty in a dream proj..PPL who read the novel surely cannot connect with it..I had emotions for a movie like Jodha Akbar and this I slept halfway..To have that mokka song Ratchasa Mamane which did no justice to the actual meeting of the lead pairs in the novel..and the way Poonkuzhalis image is depicted just for glamour..It didn't vibe..

Mani never said so. He said he wanted to blend history with kalki fictional content. Atleast u shud thank the crew for hiding away the facts like kalki 🤣And boatwomen on village never wore typical saree. so poonguzhali attite was correct. (Kalki epdi 4 per murderers ah Brahmins nu sollaama nice ah aabathudhavihal nu uruttinaaro adhuku indha movie justified)

Thanks dude... you've wrote all that I wanna express.....I too read the novel for the same in about 4weeks...but was just disappointed at the movie.... especially with the poonguzhali character...just for glamour...they've added her... otherwise they might have ignored her....

Cant accept few casts..Karthi is okay..Aish is just woww..Trisha, Vanathi i just couldnt digest..Vikram is always emoting the same..I had a huge connect to the novel and the characters..Now after watching this un ..these faces are stuck to those imagination and is haunting me..Lost the beautiful feeling the novel gave me..reminds me of the lyrics கண்ணில் காட்சி தோன்றிவிட்டால் கற்பனை தீர்ந்துவிடும்.. கண்ணில் தோ ன்றா காட்சியில் தான் கற்பனை வளர்ந்துவிடும்..🙏

P.S 1 5/10 P.S. 2 4/10 Verdict : I watched this movie few months ago on Sun tv. I rate it as Average. Not even one scene or dialogue left an impact on audience mind. Making historical movies is not your cup of tea dear Mani sir. You better stick on your underworld, anti terrorism, sentimental and romantic movies. Exotic locations, costumes and beautiful, hot heroines won't alone make a great movie. Atleast take lessons from Malayalam movies like Kaalapaani, Padayottam, Vaishali, Parinayam, Vadakkan Veeragatha, Pazhassi Raja how to write screenplay for historical and epic movies. Screenplay was boring. Dialogues were artficial. Performances and Direction never made any impact.
