I think Vikram deserves more credit for his performance in PS2. Aishwarya deserves all love of course, but I think Vikram deserves as much if not more. Yes! Finally Aishwarya Rai gets her due with PS1 & PS2. Mani Ratnam has never let her down. It is Hindi cinema that has treated Ash unfairly. Ironic how after the scandal, Salman-the-man and the powerful industry guy got the support of all bigwigs and rose higher while Ash lost movies left, right and center, and was sidelined by many industry bigwigs for no fault of hers.

Very glad to see Aishwarya getting so much love post PS 1-2. It’s not that she hasn’t been offered good roles before but as rightly pointed out the directors have often relied way too heavily on her beauty to bother paying attention to the characterisation. As much as I have loved Ash in all her films with Mani Ratnam and SLB, I think her best works are undoubtedly with Rituparno Ghosh. Raincoat was a masterpiece and I was left speechless by the time the film ended. She was FLAWLESS in that film. Chokher Bali was another film where she excelled. She was to do another film with Rituparno but sadly he passed away a few weeks before that film was to commence. And a very unpopular opinion - I think she was excellent in ADHM too, perhaps the only saving grace. The comment on Vikram and Aishwarya being the soul of the film was bang on. High time some director casts them in a mature love story with a happy ending. Brilliant actors, crackling chemistry.

True same points you have mentioned has been asked to Aishwarya in interviews and she sounds complacent in that she can only do good under the right directors otherwise she's a bad actress. It's sad that when she was part of raincoat, provoked or chokerbali it was just a phase and she never worked towards being consistent. Mani ratnam is saving grace at least he's working with actress despite age unlike some directors who just wanted the youngsters.

Manimegalali was a black beauty, she losses her memory and somehow dies in the lap of Vandiyar Thevan. She's completely different from poonguzhali who falls in love with every man she meets. Vanathi is painfully shy and would easily faint to silly things, but in the movie there was no sign of shyness that I could find. The movie has many many changes from the book.

The reason for Pazhuvettaraiyar brothers switch side - They were only in for getting Madurandhagar be crowned as Prince instead of Karihalan. They neither wanted to gain the power themselves nor the killing of Karihalan. Karihalan's death , killing of Sundara Chozan & Arunmozhi Varmar is something out of their agenda that Nandhini planned herself with pandyas. Now they realized where things are going they instantly stand still foe thier king and their kingdom. Hope this helps 😊

Indian audiences are so lucky! You get to watch pictures like Ponniyin Selvan on the big screen, as they are meant to be experienced. Having rewatched the first one (via projector at home) on the biggest screen I could find, I am genuinely happy that Mani Ratnam made this happen despite the flaws. I would compare this adaptation to the Dune films, (although the budgets VASTLY differ) Mani sir, Gulzaar Saab(am I spelling it right?) and AR Rahman all understood the assignment and just swung for it. Just like Denis Villeneuve and his team, they were tasked with a herculean task and I think (at least for PS1) they pulled it off, I hope this gives producers enough reasons for them to invest in a Poonyin Selvan miniseries or really any other period drama set in ancient India. Congrats to the team! Can't wait to catch this on streaming ( :( no releases in Ethiopia)!

Thanks Jammy for outright spoiling PS😂😂😂 for non readers.. But I agree with Anupama mam, the end works, Jayam Ravi makes it work single handedly, which is the soul of the book, it is Ponniyin Selvan's crowning moment (ironic😊).... I was actually terrified that Mani Sir would condense that twist and fit it just for the sake of the twist... I love the twist in the book, but it wouldn't freaking work in a movie, no director in the world could make it work... So I am actually glad they canceled the twist, and went with kinda the simpleton's history. (Madhurantakan=Uttama Chozhlan) Book purist in me is still coming to terms with it, but in hindsight the movie was really saved by cancelling the twist... I am more pissed that Arunmozhi-Vanathi didn't get more time... They are soooo beautiful in the books.. And Sobhitha and Ravi are so sweet together🤧

I agree as well ! I loved the book but it was too much to pull off in the movie. But that's why movie doesn't justify the sudden change in periya pazhuvettaiyar or chinna pazhuvettaiyar(Which Anu ma'am had pointed out) . I also miss Poonguzhali, I was sad that her role reduced greatly in the second part. But PS-2 was amazing in all other way !

Seen episodes of Citadel only. And I have to say the actors have done a good job. It's great in style, well choreographed fight sequences, just a tad bit rushed and perhaps lacks a bit of depth as a spy show. Yet it looks promising, waiting on more episodes now. One word - Entertaining.

SPOILER - Personally I liked alaya's uturn. I think the explanation anupama ma'am was talking about in the film was that the blue chemical brought out the worst fears of those people and made them see that. They spoke about this in the film. So they would see those fears in front of them making them kill themselves.

Anupama, your question about Chinna. P and Peria. P suddenly softening and trying to save AK, is because AK gave up the whole of chola kingdom to Maduranthakan in their conversation. The whole purpose of them conspiring anymore is purposeless.

Yeah and them softening also happens when PP gets that he has been duped by Nandini and him getting duped led to the death of Aditha... And he has raised those kids... He wanted Madhurantakan as king but never wanted any of the siblings dead

Maybe I expect way too much being an avid FC follower since its inception. It would have been lovely to have Rani's mention or anything related to Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway. In times when such movies are only being produced for the OTT, it did a decent worldwide business and a terrific performance by Rani Mukerji.

The Pazhavettai bros didnt switch sides, Nandini had convinced them to rebel against the Princes "for the good of the people" by making it seem like both wanted the throne for themselves, its why Parthibendran also instantly believes Vandiyathevan killed off Karikalan on Aruls orders. When they find out she was with the enemy the whole time they try and do everything they can to help and repent. They didn't want the throne for themselves and they would never have been on board with using the enemies of the kingdom, Nandini and the Pandyas used them exactly to help pit the remaining chieftains against the crown and used Maduranthakan (who actually had a legit claim to the throne - its why Rajarajan stepping aside means even more, he let himself get skipped in the line of succession to restore it and then becomes King with a clean slate while also completely avoiding the civil war entirely)

the director switched the crown from the flower guy(chola) because the crown's right fully belong to the pandyas and madurantak is the blood line of the pandya (who was secrety protected and brought up by the cholas) king slain by karikala for his wrong doings. Hence the director took the liberty and pride to establish drama and returned the kingdom of the pandyas to its right full owner. the cholas having there majestic king Sundara chola dint require a alternative hence the story ends.

    - Madhurantakan’s rise to power came out of left field in the screenplay… I didn’t think that storyline was well developed. When Arunmozhi decides to give up the throne, I was like “what?!??”. In full disclosure, I have not read the book nor do I know enough about the history. - For sure Aishwarya had a lot of screen presence but I agree with the other comments that Vikram was absolutely mesmerizing. Both of them had a solid grip on the audience. The scene where he is speaking with the chieftains was awesome! - Apart from Veera Raja Veera, no other song felt memorable. But, ARR’s songs can also have a slow burn sort of effect. Does anyone else think he is a better background scorer than music director?

here's my opinion, his songs are GREAT..., PS1 is my favourite movie album in recent times, PS2 is not that great(still loved anthem tho), and he's had absolute alll time bangers in terms of songs as well(roja, bombay)...., but agreed on ur last point, rahman the background scorer trumps rahman the song composer any day of the week
