POMPII - THE CITY BURIED by the ASHES of the VESUVIO VOLCANO for more than FIFTY HUNDRED YEARS
The city of Pompeii is close to Naples and Mount Vesuvius, about 25 km, half an hour away.
It began to be inhabited around the Bronze Age, between 3,000 and 1,200 BC.
Roman influence over Pompeii occurred after the Samnite Wars in the 4th century BC.
During the 1st century AD, Pompeii had approximately 12 thousand inhabitants in urban areas and 24 thousand inhabitants in rural areas.
Pompeii was a prosperous and developed city, inhabited by wealthy people, and had mansions, monuments and brothels.
In 79 AD the city of Pompea was destroyed in a volcanic eruption of Vesuvius, which buried the city with volcanic material.
The city was hit by a rain of incandescent stones emitted by the volcano, ash and toxic gas, which lasted two days.
The city was buried for more than 1500 years, its ruins were discovered at the end of the 16th century by architect Domenico Fontana. Archaeological work only began in 1748.
To get to Pompeii, in my case, I took the Trenitalia train from Naples central station in Garibaidi Square. Take the Circumvesuviana train and the line is Naples-Sorrento, then get off at Scavi-Villa Dei Misteri station and soon you will see the entrance to the archaeological site of Pompeii.
The journey from Naples to Pompeii lasts around 30 to 40 minutes.
