Polynesian seafaring - history and Hawaiian re-creation

Ғылым және технология

Captain Cook 'discovers' Tahiti and Hawaii. The natives tell Cook how they navigated the vast Pacific Ocean. Later commentators dispute this, and some natives of today---many decades after ravages of their culture by outsiders--decide to rebuild the ancient navigation knowledge and traditional sailing canoes to create a new legacy of wayfinding and revive the spirit of the ancestral way as they teach others to face new horizons.

Herb Kawainui Kane speaks about Thor Heyerdahl and his Kon-Tiki expedition, and then the Hokule'a (Hōkūle'a)-- a re-created ancient double-hulled voyaging canoe (vaka taurua) featured in this extract.

Mr. Kane, a native Hawaiian BTW, said it very well in 06:01, when he said that the language of the "Polynesian" all have roots in South East Asia. Hence, the Indonesians, Micronesians, Polynesians, Madagascarians, Thai, and Filipinos are collectively known today as Austronesians.

Your write bro they gave navigation back to Maori and the rest of Polynesia because we had lost it. Everyone on here have good views except the hatters. But in my view as a Ngati Pāoa Maori and been told the story's Nga hau e wha the four winds we connect to all of the island's Hawai'i and Tahiti In my veiw play a really big part in the colonisation of Polynesia as does samoa and Tonga Kia Ora Whanau

Fijians have adopted the art of Naval warfare through it's deployment of war canoes out on open ocean. This was evident in most old war stories. The biggest war canoe is called the Drua. They generally house 200 warriors and 40 seamen. Accompanying the Drua are canoes called the Tabilai which are on standby if they are attacked out on high seas. The Tabilai is deployed to ram into enemy ships since it's built with a bulky frontages that opens up the hull of canoes. The Tabilai ramming canoes are often accompanied by another type of canoes called the Camakau. It's a boarding canoe soon after it's being rammed by the Tabilai. This save the main army in the Drua which do battle in main land. We have other canoes like the Takia meant for fishing and the Tabakau built so that young men practice their craft of sailing before jumping up the ranks to the Drua which is biggest of them all and the canoe responsible for bringing Fijians to the Fijian Islands

@samoantoa08 said, " I already know that language is similar. Like, no duh dude. But that does not mean it is fact that Southeast asians became Polynesians" Linguistic evidence is one among many evidences that point Pacific Islanders to South East Asia. The term, Indonesian, Micronesian, Polynesian are misnomers from the Europeans. The actual term collectively is Austronesians. Look that up.

I didn't know that the trade winds shift for part of the year. The knowledge that went into long-distance voyaging without compasses, or 'modern' navigational equipment amazes me. It is so unfortunate that the Polynesian people were cut off from this, and wonderful that they're getting it back. What would we do if our modern technology should somehow fail us? We would need the old tried and true methods of the ancient people.

The only connection between Peru and the Polynesian islands is a legend about an Inca who set sail on a Balsa raft so that he could inspect his realm, he did after all own the whole world. According to the legend, he returned after four years, when his people began to give up hope of his return and on board with him were a small number of dark skinned people apparently picked up from an island along the way. I think it's possible that Thor Heyerdahl heard of that legend and made the biggest mistake of his life. I read the Kon Tiki expedition in 1970 but I never believed his claim that Peruvians took the sweet potato to the Polynesians because I knew their primitive rafts were not capable as were the double hulled canoes of the Polynesians. Peruvians were land people while Polynesians were sea people. I believe it was the Polynesian navigators who travelled to and from South America trading with the people living there, not the other way around.

Europeans and European descendants once had our own nature based religions too, but we are quite removed from them. Everywhere I turn, it seems many people are looking to reconnect spiritually. Our Vaka's will sail 4 or 5 times faster then Captain's Cooks ship. Our people had no problems getting around our highways. Maybe the Polynesians got to north and south America before Columbus....CAPTAIN COOK WAS VERY SURPRISED OF HOW FAST OUR VAKA'S WERE, He keeped quite about it when he sail back to England. Other wise the Europeans will be coming..We didnt have a written language but we talatalanoa..Dont underestimate our knowledge of our highways.

Lima in most Malay language means the number 5 or hand, sounds familia? yup, that's right, it exactly like Samoan 5 or hand. Sepulu means ten in Bahasa, like sefulu in Samoan. Api means fire, life Afi in Samoan...need more?

These large amount of water from these states made their way from the north through Arizona and that created the Grand Canyon in Arizona that we see today. Its sad most people today dont know about this lost Continent.

@176709 Your not sure about the Tongans, Samoans and fijians?? First off Fijian is Melanesian not Polynesian and many Tongans are mixed with Fijians which make them darker in color. If you see light skin Tongans its because they usually dont have that Fijian (Melanesian) blood in them which makes them more Polynesian such as myself. All Polynesians started at one island and separated to the other lands. Polynesians are 1 people.

Fiji doesn't want to be counted as poly or mela anymore. You're talking without any proper research/facts, just out of skin colour. 1st of all, Fiji was 1st inhabited by polynesians near the coastal areas, this is because the oldest pottery found in fiji is of polynesian designs, it was later settled by melanesians who settled in the highlands, there was conflict so most of the polys moved to other poly islands, the rest mixed with the melanesians and produced Fijians and they stuck with the polynesian language and culture thats fiji language is similar to Tonga& maori like the numbers, the names, fijians dont speak in the melanesian language which is "tok pisin". Your royal family in Tonga has a shit load of Fijian blood in it lol. King maafu himself was a descendant of delaivugalei a great fijian Chief who's descendant was mumui of Tonga. Tongan princesses would get married To Fijian noblemen to strengthen blood ties not only in Lau but everywhere in Fiji if you do your research you'll know this is true, it was vice versa too king tupou 2 had Fijian son to the self proclaimed king of Fijis granddaughter you can search that up too! If you live in Tonga you'll see that there are Fijian cheifs mingling with the royal family today, thats because they are closely related. Anyways the point is, focus on Tonga and stop debating about Fiji, Fiji is Fiji! And they know their true roots! Instead of debating about this just try and beat fijians in rugby lol or else do proper research. Malo dox, ʻIkai fie maʻu ke tau

There are remnants of Polynesian language in the Quechua, and also in island names in Canada's NW so maybe 2,000 years ago there were people speaking Austronesian languages in America. The Polynesian Y DNA in Melanesia is a very ancient one - 11,500 years ago, so this shows an ancient point of origin, but not a stepping stone for Polynesians. Polynesian DNA in Melanesia only appears in the last 1,000 years.

The reason this continent disappeared was because of a massive earthquake that shook the land and the whole continent dropped straight down at least a 1000 feet . Go to Google Earth and look at the rim around the pacific ocean and you will see walls that are at least 1000 feet high which tells you that the land has dropped.

Okay and tell me something I don't know please. I already know that language is similar. Like, no duh dude. But that does not mean it is fact that Southeast asians became Polynesians. I'm not saying Polynesians are not Southeast Asian at all. I believe Polynesians are a mix, which I have my opinion on what the mix is, which I wont post on here. But what I'm trying to say is Polynesians didn't just descend from just S.E. Asians.

It's entirely possible and far more likely that the sweet potato was just picked up from Chile when Polynesian explorers set ground there and then brought BACK to Polynesia. As for culture, attire, and customs, it could easily have been passed either way, being brought from Polynesia to South America or vice versa. If it had been the other way, the language would have remained predominantly South American throughout and slowly picked up little pieces of Asian influence as it traveled West.

Just out of curiosity, I would like to know how much of this arguing is fueled by Mormon doctrine, seeing as how LDS is a strong cultural influence on parts of Polynesia (?). Just curious.

Not the traditional Asian as you know but Austronesians. That is according to the scientists of course. All Polynesian cultures only say their great God Tagaloa made them and then made the islands for them to live on. And then other Polynesian cultures talk about how their Patriarch or Patriarchs sailed from Samoa or Tonga, or Tahiti or etc.

@samoantoa08 POOHAHA!! I'd like to see evidence of a Samoan whooping a Dane or a Sudanese when in fact both there are many Danes and Sudanese that can whoop Samoans in the Olympic games with medals. Any Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals from Samoa? I don't think so.

Maybe there was a big migration out of East Asia 8,000 years ago via the Kuroshio current to America and some colonised Hawai'i way back then. That is why there is a divergence of Polynesian Haplogroup B from American Haplogroup B. Why do the Tlingit have the same HLA Bw48 as Polynesians?? Details of this DNA shows a migration from Tlingit to Polynesia - not the reverse. It is not a simple story.

@samoantoa08 You have to state the facts like this: From yfcasiapacific . org, "First settled more than 3000 years ago, the islands of Samoa attracted a gradual migration from South East Asia." There see. Not that hard is it? If you constantly just throw out words without backing it up with facts then it's subjective comment.

@GuamKomudo That writing system can be found in the Indus Valley in India. That is known as one of the oldest civilizations in the world.. When the Europeans used their guns to slave rap and steal the Polynesian peoples land they also erased most of their ancient history so I doubt anyone can read it. If so probably a few Rapa Niu people.
