Polymer Clay Tools for Beginners - Basic Starter Kit

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Video #731: If you are just getting started with polymer clay, here are the tools that will get you going, without spending a lot of money... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
In today's Studio Tip, I am going to talk about Polymer Clay Tools for Beginners.
Now I am a professional polymer clay instructor with a nice studio filled with all kinds of tools, supplies, paints, inks and that kind of thing... but that isn't where I started out. I started out as a beginner... just like everyone else.
So, I wanted to share with you some of the things I learned and show you the real basic tools that will get you started working with polymer clay.
I dug around in my studio and found the very first polymer clay beads and canes that I ever made. I though you might like to see them.
A long time ago (probably 20 years now), I was watching the Carol Duvall Show on HGTV and Donna Kato (a well known polymer clay artist who has created the Kato Polyclay line of products), came on and made this polymer clay cane. I was absolutely fascinated with what she could do with that squishy block of plastic clay!
Now I had been a little bit familiar with Fimo... played with it as a kid and actually had a block or two, and some Sculpey III, in my craft stash. But I had no idea that you could make such cool things... until seeing Carol and Donna on that fateful day. Ever since, I've been hooked on polymer clay.
The very first thing I made was this flower cane that was all wonky (see video)... but I was so delighted with it. Just to show you how far I have come since then, here is an example of the Easter Lily Cane that I now teach people to make and is is so much more detailed and beautiful compared to my original quirky little flower cane.
I went on to make another cane, ended up combining it with the first cane, to make this cane here (see video). That was when I got really excited about the whole process. That you could take these wonky canes and end up with something that was super detailed.
Back then there wasn't a lot of information on how to do things, so I had to figure out a lot of the stuff on my own. Over the years I have figured out the basic things that you will need to have success with working with polymer clay. And this is the advice that I give to beginners just starting out...
To be honest all you HAVE to have is a block of clay, your hands and an oven. But there are some things that will make the process a lot easier and I have broken it down into five main items. Watch the video to find out what they are.

Was NOT prepared for the nostalgia attack of the Carol Duvoll show. I use to watch that show with my mom all the time! Although my mom would always fast forward the polymer clay sections because we "will never get into this." Fast forward 15 years and I am :D

So glad to see your first efforts. I'm just starting in polymer clay, but have been a spinner for a long, long time. I encourage newby spinners to keep a sample of their first yarn, and I'm trying to do the same with my polymer clay efforts. It lets you see how far you've come and sometimes can give you fresh enthusiasm.

You may have addressed this before, but I just wanted to add a tool that I have found works great for me. When I first started sculpting, I didn't have any shaping tools, and was on a budget. So I started making my own out of anything I could find. I stumbled upon knitting needles (my wife's failed hobby attempt). I had many to choose from. I found that I can make just about any tool needed, using a metal knitting needle, a file, sandpaper and pliers. I file the tips to make straight edges, which files easily because most needles are aluminum. Once I like the edge, I sand it smooth. If I need a tool with a curve I bend it with the pliers. This is a good cheap way of making a tool on the fly. Knitting needles come in so many thicknesses, that I really can get what I want. I'm constantly thinking up a new tool that I could use, so I pause my sculpture, make whatever tool I need, and then just start again. It's something I can't work without.

I also have a few tiny tools made from wire. Like loops and stuff are wonderful. And you can use any wire that doesn't have a coating on it. Florist's wire for example is often cheap and the one without a plastic coating is great for such things.

Polymer clay is non-toxic (at least the brands you can buy in North America) and are safe to bake in your home oven. SO go ahead. The problem is if you bake a ton of polymer clay projects, a plasticky residue can build up on your oven walls. If you're baking small items you can seal them inside a baking pan with a lid or a turkey bag, to avoid that residue. For larger items that can't be baked inside anything, I just run the self cleaning cycle after I am done baking my piece. You can also just wipe down the walls and the door with a baking soda paste. It's because of this hassle, that a lot of people have separate ovens.

Thanks for a very informative video - I started to do polymer clay years ago, got injured and stopped and would like to get back into it. But as you mentioned in your video if you lose too much of the oils in your clay it will get brittle. Apparently that happens over time just from evaporation as well as from working on a porous surface. Is there some particular type of oil that I could somehow soak/massage into my old clay so it can be made workable again? I can't afford to buy all new clay at this time and would hate for my old polymer clay to go to waste.

Hi there, thank yo for your kind words! Yes there is an oil called Sculpey Clay softener that you can add to polymer clay to make it soft again. I have several videos on conditioning hard clay that should be very helpful for you. Check them out in our channel!

I have issues with baking :( I have an electrical oven that has no flames .. "building rules!" how can I work with that? and how do I know the exact time for each kind of polymer as the ones I find in my country have no instructions. also, they are really stiff .. so I add oil while softening it .. so im not sure how it will effect baking? and thank you for the tutorials ^_^

You're going to need to get an oven to properly bake polymer clay. You can use your regular home oven if you have one or a toaster oven. If not, I suggest using an airdry polymer clay instead.

Sure. It may get scratches on it, if you also cut on it, but as long as it doesn't react with the clay it should be just fine.
