Holy cow this works! I'm a polymer clay addict and the only downside has been the cost of the clay. I don't live near any craft stores so added to the increased prices available online is the shipping costs so yeah, expansive. I bit the bullet and ordered what you suggested on your blog. It all arrived yesterday and I can't begin to tell you how impressed I am. The texture of this clay, depending on how much Kaolin you add ranges from the softness of Premo to the firmness of Kato. Now to make this even better I can report there was no cracking during baking which was the problem with the original Sculpt clay, Sculpty III and much of the other polymer clay out there. Primo & Kato being the exceptions. You're my hero today! Thank you!

Glad to hear of your success and I had to get my clay online as well but it should go a long way. Perhaps you should make a video showing the relationship between amount of clay and softness which I didn't do on my website video. This is actually my thesis for university. I'm a student of materials engineering and I was always interested in polymer clay. I've recently bought plastisol ink and kaolin and I've been doing some samples and experiments mixing it with bentonite and other things, but there's many things i don't understand and it's hard to find papers talking about this topic. It is a white screen printing plastisol ink from UNION, Maxoplak standard product that you can add your own pigments to. But there are many such inks available online and at Dick Blick. Its cheaper than buying the colored ones that I used. Ken.

Most dry artists pigments as well as oil-based pigments will work but paints don't have the tincturial strength and require more kaolin. I have even heard that some oil-based makeup will work. Check out the comments on the website for more ideas, Ken.

can buy powder pigments used for making cosmetics and soaps or paints on Amazon. I wouldnt use any paints like he said already. Although oil paint seems to work fine. But it depends on the brand as some do not have strong pigmentation. Alcohol inks work as well. But the best way to avoid breaking down the clay would be to mix the inks into the clay after the clay is formed and you need to let the ink dry on the clay before mixing it into it. Otherwise it could break it down and/or just make it really goopy and sticky.

Hi observation, Just a quick question, I've been using sculpey original clay, as you know it's way to soft. but it's cheap. would adding kaolin clay to it make it more firm to work with? Thanks

It may help a little but the determining factors are the ratio of PVC to the plasticizer. But, a small experiment might be interesting, Ken.

The only other PC that I had as a control was original Sculpy and I find that mine is a little softer but still works the same. I was not trying to make a better PC but a real PC that was totally usable and cheap. Thanks, Ken.

Hi Ken, great video. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how to find the components used for htv silicone rubber. I believe this video has two of the four or so basic components :) Just need silicone rubber, and possibly some kind of retarder until the heat process can be done. Do you have any suggestions? I didnt see any other way I could see to contact you. Nate

I have been searching for an economical and accessible solution to this for over a year as the nearest distributor for common clay brands is over an hours drive away from me and often sold out. This is true. Same with jesmonite ac100. I've literally spend ridiculous amounts of time searching for information that u would think wouldn't be hard to find. Its almost like its being hid purposely lol🤔🤣😂🤣

Yes it must be baked but best not in an oven where food is baked as well. Use an old toaster oven or such. See my website for the write up, Ken

Does the color of the kaolin clay matter, and will it affect the color of the end product?

If you are using white ink you will need some type of pigment to color. They are available online. If the small piece you made is soft then the ink sounds like it is a very low amount of PVC. There are no books or other videos but a Google search for patents will help. Ken.

The paint is a plastisol with polyvinyl chloride and a plasticizer. Basically a silk screen ink readily available, Ken.

you are the only one on youtube who made a video about real polymer clay ! , every one else say corn starch and glue which is cold porcelian ! or they use water and oil and flour ! which is a cake lol , so your video is great , but i still have a problem ! i can get things from a workshop store or the market ,but i have no access in my country to plastictesol u r using ! nor white clay :( , so what u think i can use instead ? ! , can i use Plasticina clay ? and u said the white clay for the silicon inside it , so can i use silicon instead ? thanks a lot for the great experiments and sharing it . keep on ..

Not every country has reliable mail service six days a week. Some countries don't accept international packages, some highly tax them as imports, and some are flat out stolen.

Which one is harder after baking? The paint, or your clay? Thx!

The clay is definitely harder and while I have no durometer data the ink is somewhat pliable after baking.

Couple questions: How do I stop making it crumble up? I cant seem to get the right consistency, and it keeps sticking to the sticks And can you mix a specific ratio of it in a blender or something? Since this method takes very long for small amounts.

Its crumbling because there isn't enough ink or there is something different about your materials. You can't use a blender but most people have no problem so my guess is the ink or the kaolin. Ken.

Do you do this with non-phthalate ink or not? Does the kaolin clay stop the toxicity? Do all screen printing inks work? Anyways thNks for the video! Just want to say you are AWESOME!

The clay does not stop the toxicity, though the only real issue would be the toxic fumes admitted into the air when heating. Or the plastisisers that get caked onto the inside of the oven. So the best thing to do is use a small toaster oven used only for crafts and no longer use it for your food. And heat in well ventilated area, wear a mask and/or do it outside. You can use a heat gun too instead of the oven. But take the precautions above. The kaolin clay is just acting as a thickener to give it a moldable clay consistency. And not all textile inks will work as they need to be heat curing plastisols. Thats important if you're wanting to make actual polymer clay. Otherwise you mind as well just make cold porcelain or something.

The plastisol inks that I used are phrhlate safe so generally they are safe. Let the oven clear any odor after use if any. Ken.

It may work but the effort may be against it. First the low viscosity will complicate the addition of the clay and the second is the very high temperature needed to solidify is hard to control. So, my guess is that the starting point is still a plastisol ink but that is my opinion based on somewhat limited knowledge of the lure plastisol. Hope that this helps, Ken.

As a polymer clay artist, I do have to say that sculpey brand polymer clay can and will burn if you cook it for too long c: Dunno bout your kind though. Good tutorial!

No, it won’t burn if you “cook it too long.” So long as you don’t exceed the recommended temperature, it’ll never burn. (Cure it at too *high* a temperature to burn it.) Most folks who work with polymer know that curing it for longer periods makes it stronger. Cure it at too low a temperature and it’ll be liable to crack and break.

I Do make flowers with that please can you make a vídeo explaining how you did the stove is super interesting

Fuller's earth and bentonite will work if it is fine and not course. You could also search for other silica containing clays for your area, Ken.

It would be AWSOME if u could experiment with a DIY jesmonite ac-100 recipe. I've experimented with it and had pretty good results. Using pure gypsum powder, lime powder & acrylic bonding fortifier for cement. It seems to look like jesmonite but it does not dry in 20 mins like jesmonite. I've had many fails with this experiment. Its a more natural and affordable epoxy resin alternative that im obsessed with lately 😳😅 Jesmonite ac100 isnt available in the United States and ordering it online is ridiculously expensive.

Omg I loooooooooove this! U covered everything perfectly. I've been searching for DIY techniques for polymer clay for awhile now. I have a thing with DIY-'ing alot of my crafts, down to the base materials lol. Now usually after this video I would try to figure out how to make/purchase plastisol instead or plastisol ink.. Luckily u covered that as well. Thank u for explaining it wouldn't be beneficial considering the cost & time. Time & money saved 😁 I likeyyy😊

Apparently sport fisher make rubber bait fish with plastosol and you get colorless plastosol from hard to soft. Where to get this stuff in your country check out fisher forum or search diy rubber bait. ;) Thanks for sharing, othwise I wouldn't have googled plastosol and never learned of flexSol.

No because rubber ink will not get as hard when baking as plastosols will, Ken.

Hi Ken, REAL POLYMER CLAY! Thank you, I've commented on your open source I make lamps and lampshades. Premo Accents Polymer Clay is one of the materials I use, and you are right itis very expensive. I custom color my PC with alcohol inks, to match a lamp shade, a lamp base etc. I also use Premo Accents Translucent clay often, on sale it is $16/lb. Is there a plasticizer, and other ingredients,uncolored, that could make a translucent PC. Premo cures at 275 degrees for one hour. Thank you for your wonderful KZread channel. I am a subscriber

There are translucent resin thickener powders you can use. But if not, there is also translucent food grade powders that are basically modified cornstarch that chefs use to make things like those clear "cakes" or drink thickeners that rehabs and nursing homes use to thicken water or other drinks for the patients that have a hard time swallowing and/or other disabilities that could put them at risk of aspiration or choking.

After baking it is essentially PVC which is insoluble in water but is porous enough to absorb some moisture so use a spray lacquer to form a water barrier, Ken.

I tried plaster of paris....it dont work! stays sticky, so I ordered the Clay

Plaster of Paris is a Plaster, not a filler... Corn Starch or something like that would work better than Plaster of Paris... that's like saying "i don't got Flour for my Cake, so ill use Potting Soil instead"

Yes. Soapmakers use it in cold process soap to retain the scent also.
