The unfortunate thing about that is that a lot of foreign language sections are only a few shelves long like that one. Now, if the entire bookstore were solely language learning books, then we'd be getting somewhere.

I miss Borders--they had a huge, great foreign language section in my area. Now there are only small bookstores here that probably barely keep from going bankrupt. There is no pleasure greater than browsing in a good bookstore, but lately I find myself buying foreign language books online--mostly Amazon.

In the US, the list price of a book is the last four digits of the smaller barcode (if that barcode begins with a 5): So 50899 costs $8.99 and 51995 costs $19.95. You can try that out the next time you're gallivanting at B&N and you don't see a price tag (like the French novel Abigail was looking at).

Hey Guys! This is super late, but I love learning languages too! I don't consider myself a polyglot, but I hope to be one day. I have been studying Spanish for 6 years, Russian for 8, and have just started Icelandic, Hebrew, and Swedish. I live in Portland, Oregon and my absolute favorite bookstore is Powell's. the whole store takes up 4 city blocks! Their language section is 6 or 7 rows or shelves easily 20 times as wide and twice as high as the language section in this video. They have a website and there is no sales tax on purchases! I would highly recommend you guys check it out. I easily spend all day when I go. And sometimes I can find books as cheap at $7 for novels by Tolstoy in Russian for certain editions! Let me know if you check it out. It also has many languages including many Native American and African languages. So if you can't find resources elsewhere, they might have it! Although I've been struggling with German, Spanish and Esperanto, yet when I see the blazing colors of these language resources, my love for these languages is revived especially German.

I love looking in second hand book stores for my language books, lots of people like the idea of learning a language then loose motivation and give their books to the stores. I've found some great deals there.

My library has a book sale with books donated from people in town who don't want them anymore. The language section isn't very big compared to the sale as a whole, but considering you can fill up a paper grocery bag for $10 I always take the opportunity to stock up on language books! This year I couldn't go, but my mom got me some crazy stuff I can't buy at regular bookstores like books in Swedish and a Pashto dictionary!

Polyglot Progress I'm trying to learn Swedish at the moment, sadly the books available are quite limited. Complete Swedish, Swedish Tutor, and From English to Swedish 1 and 2 are fairly good. The Bridge and Blue Eyes are great sources for audio practice, the music is great too.

The first thing I look for in my language resources something that's not in English, which for me means probably in French. Ever since I learned French it's been a sort of adoptive mother-tongue; not because I was adopted by someone who speaks French, but because I have adopted French as the instruction language for the following langues. I do have to admit though that this methodology has totally sucked all the fun out of bookstores, but reading in English is rarely worth my time (it's gotta be a darn good book). I've used Assimil's French courses for Russian, Italian, and now Hebrew. I will probably start using Russian more to learn things as I improve, but my English just doesn't need the practice.

I totally relate to this. I've adopted German as a semi-mother tongue for myself so much so that I often pretend its at the same level as my native English XD But at the same time I'm often afraid to ladder my languages in a manner like this (though I'm totally intrigued by it and would do it in a heartbeat to be honest). When I was last in Germany I bought a book (auf Deutsch) that is a course teaching Plattdeutsch! I am SO excited by this and I am so excited to dive into it and I will definitely post an update on here once I have a definitive answer as to how I feel laddering languages! I also think I'm more inclined to ladder languages like German and Norwegian because of how similar they are. For example in my Norwegian videos when I forget a word I will say the German one because its often close enough, whereas with my French I don't have another Romance language to throw in there (unless you'd count what Esperanto I can remember!) I look forward to hearing how your Russian goes and improves! Good luck with your learning!! - Matt

When I first started learning Russian (via French) I found that it helped me complete the goal of not translating mentally into English (which is just annoying and cumbersome once you can understand well). Translating a translation (RU>FR>EN) was entirely unnecessary so my brain would finally settle for French as a means to understanding Russian (or anything else). I think that separating my thoughts from my native language was an important feat because now I can "think in" any language I'm trying to speak, even if I really can't speak it well. I've learned to bypass the English filter to my brain. Doing something fairly difficult in an acquired language, in my case another language, helped me do that. That's just one reason I advocate "triangulation" (which IMO more aptly describes using multiple languages, not simply an L2) in language learning. - Jonathan

I’m always meaning to do this, I started doing a duolingo German course but from french instead of English and it really helped keep me from translating back into English

Well, and in Germany, I'm already over the moon when they have half a shelf full of language learning books...like, in total, not for each language. I order all my books from Amazon, because there is no use in actually entering a physical book store.

Chineasy (the cute hanzi book) has an app!

Congrats on finally getting the German Tutor book, Abigail. I always do that with any language book. I think about whether I want it, walk around with it, look at it, but in the end I usually end up putting it back.

I go to used bookstores and thrift stores. I have found 90% of my language books in thrift stores !

We had in the Netherlands (Amsterdam) a book store, named "Intertaal". (taal = language in Dutch). In that store you could find only books and materials to learn languages. A real paradise for an ployglot.

I usually buy my Korean books online. I have very limited resources where I live so I have to search online for mine.

Yay! I was so happy to see there was a new video of yours! ^_^ What I look for in languages books is: less focus on the grammar and more focus on active learning :) Because of that I quite enjoy the Assimil method and books that have sentences translation exercises. Best of luck with Arabic! :)

I always get my language books from the library first. I've been so excited about a book before and have gone to use it and been dissapointed and moved on to a differant resource

Oh, you guys I loved your channel! :) What I look for in language resources/books is a nice combination of grammar and vocabulary with phrases usually said in the language, a lot of examples and exercises with their respective answers. For example, I bought a book of Japanese a couple of years ago but it turned out that half of the book was FULL of practice sheets of hiragana and katakana, while the other half was composed of dialogues and exercises without the answers -____- Anyway, it was VERY VERY expensive and of course I didn't know that it was shitty before buying it because it was closed and in our libraries you can't look through them if they aren't open xD I haven't started learning Japanese yet so that's sad.

I honestly highly recommend WaniKani for Japanese kanji specifically. Based on the videos I watched Abigail seems to prefer reading comprehension over speaking. It's a big of a slow start due to the Spaced Repetition System but it's really helpful with learning useful kanji and vocabulary for reading comprehension. I've been studying Japanese for three years in high school and I've done two short Japanese homestays and WaniKani has really helpful with my reading practice.

I had to read L'Étranger for class last semester! I also buy Japanese books but never get around to studying Japanese. A funny one you can look at is Making Out in Japanese. I bought it because it was suggested by a KZreadr who said that it's good for learning colloquial phrases in Japanese. It has some silly things in there and I've enjoyed trying to read the phrases to my boyfriend haha Not everything in there is about relationships. It has all kind of content! Great video! I totally nerd out every time I go into Barnes and Noble and look in the language section. Finding a good book is hard. Also, I've gone in the kids section to see what books they offer in Spanish (or other languages if there are any) to practice my reading

Cool video. You guys from Eastern Mass? I'm from Western Mass and was just doing some research on some of the most spoken and useful languages in the state. Thankfully I've already got my Spanish on lock and Portuguese at a conversational level. You guys kind of convinced me to go buy some new books so it looks like I might need to pick up some stuff in Haitian Creole.

This was fun, just hearing you chat about your language books ^_^ If you end up using Painless Italian I'd love to hear if you like it! There is this book outlet I sometimes go to and every time I'm there they have Painless Spanish and that's one of those books that I never get but always regret afterwards. I went there again today and again I didn't buy it xD And it was so cheap that it wouldn't really matter if it was a shitty book :p

*Get yourselves some Assimil books... they are the best resources. Also, you may or may not be able to find them online for free through reddit, hint hint.*

In einem Sprachlernbuch finde ich wichtig, dass es Audio hat, sei es mit CD oder Download. Außerdem sollte es generell viel Input bieten. Texte mit Übersetzung und Anmerkung zur Grammatik. Ich brauche nicht unbedingt explizite Regeln, aber wenn eine neue Struktur auftaucht, finde ich kurze Erklärungen sehr hilfreich. Zusätzlich mag ich gerne, wenn es hinten ein Wörterverzeichnis ALLER Wörter, die vorkommen, gibt. Zur Zeit lerne ich täglich mit einem Ungarischbuch von Assimil, welches mir ziemlich gut gefällt. (Der Assimilmethode tatsächlich zu folgen und dann zu glauben, dass man viel lernt, ist meiner Meinung nach Wunschdenken) Da die Audiosachen von Assimil immer schweineteuer sind, habe ich sie mir nicht gekauft. Zum Glück habe ich aber auf Memrise genau den passenden Kurs gefunden, um auch die Aussprache zu lernen. Übrigens: tolles Video, ihr beiden! I want to have a friend I can a go to the bookstore with and look at language books😂

We both are VERY VERY SHY! This is something that is totally different for each and every person. Whenever we are out in public and hear a speaker of one of the languages we speak we get super excited but then we both freeze up! For example: We were in a store the other day and heard a woman speaking French on the phone, once she hung up I kept asking Abigail if we should speak to her and started to kind of speak amongst ourselves in French (which is what I typically do when I hear a language and know what another person is speaking for certain). Sadly we didn't have enough courage to speak to her but most of the times I'm out with family and we come across somebody speaking a language I speak, oftentimes my family will go up to them and be like "Hello! My son thinks you're speaking German and would love to speak with you" And then I get super embarrassed and try to run away. So yes, this is something both of us need to work on quite a bit! A KZread polyglot who has NO FEAR speaking in public is Moses (his channel is laoshu5050000) and he is an absolute inspiration for me when it comes to speaking to people in public! Thank you so much and good luck with speaking!! Shyness is so difficult to overcome but it is definitely possible! :)

Does anyone know if the Complete Living Language series is any good?

Those Teach Yourself language Tutor books are brilliant. 😃 I ordered the Swedish Tutor one from Amazon for a cheaper price and it has helped a lot than any other Swedish grammar book. The Swedish grammar book that Matt showed us, as well as another Swedish book, both of which I found on Amazon before I come across the Tutor book are not the best and they’re old books from the 1980’s and 1990’s. Regarding the languages mentioned in this video, there is a Norwegian Tutor book, a Danish Tutor book, an Italian Tutor book and a Spanish Tutor book too. 😃

You guys are awesome and your interest and enthusiasm for language learning is so admirable - and cute! I look at you and see a mirror image of myself in that respect. I'm 42 and have been like this since I was about 8 so you never grow out of it I don't think. How old are you guys and are you both studying languages for degrees at university? I'd love to email you guys and chat about languages in more detail if possible? I speak Welsh, French and Spanish and have learned the basics of many others over the years such as Arabic, Finnish and Russian alphabet. Hope to chat!

It's so nice to hear that it's something you never grow out of! I'm a double major with a BFA in film production and a BA in languages and culture (with a concentration in French), and Matt is still in high school but is going to be a BA creative writing major and hopes to add linguistics as a minor or possible second major! We're currently both 18, though I'l be 19 in a week. -Abigail

L'Étranger is a super easy book to read! If you have a B1 level in French, it can be a nice reading. A great book, which you can find FOR FREE in the internet.

The language section in the book stores I know aren't nearly as big. xD (And wow... Hamilton was playing in the background the whole time! I'd love to visit a store in which they play musical soundtracks although I wouldn't be able to focus on the books, I suppose xD)

You're lucky. xD I order most of my books on the internet because my local book shop has a very small shelf with language books. They don't sell most of the languages I am interested in (although I didn't expect them to have Finnish or Scottish Gaelic xD) and when they do it's boring tourist stuff. I don't live in a big city, so that's probably why they offer so few good books. Another reason is that there aren't as many great resources for language learning in my native tongue (German) as in English. But conplaining somewhere on the internet won't help. I'll just have to look out for a good book shop the next time I visit a bigger city.^^

Are you guys familiar with the Living Language series? If so, what do you think of it? I bought the Italian edition and highly recommend it!

This is one cool language channel, how many languages do you guys speak each? I'm starting French and Urdu, then next year Arabic, all the best to you from West Yorkshire England ✌

For me it depends on my level in the target language. If it is a beginners course, I prefer either a book in English or in Norwegian, my native language; however, if the target language resembles another language that I study, I will try a book that only uses the language I am learning :) If it is an intermediate course, I prefer books solely in the target language, unless that language uses another alphabet :P

Yes, I can understand how that might be hard, though considering how many different languages are spoken in the US, it shouldn't be :/ If you're open to buying on the internet, I can recommend Vía Rápida from difusión (Spanish), though this is an intensive course and not an indepth one. As for French, CLE international has a series called Grammaire Progressive du Francais which I believe has books for all the levels :) both come with Cds as well!

He said ask 'how' to go to the bathroom. Why are you asking that in a foreign country?

6 Months thinking about a book

I use thriftbooks.com !! They have colloquial books for cheap and audio online!! (they have a colloquial 'arabic of egypt' for $3.59 right now!!) although sometimes they don't have the audio cd for some language books, they have really good prices and I've been able to expand my language book collection because of them!! XD

yeah dude, go for Langenscheidt, its also my favorite. there is also Pons and Hueber, actually almost the same, but for some reason Langenscheidt is most appealing to me. Liebe Grüße aus Österreich. PS: I forgot about Assimil, those are awesome too.

Ich lerne Türkisch mit Assimil. Kann ich sehr empfehlen. Allerdings wenn man nach bestimmten Dingen sucht, ist es nicht so gut. Da ist Langenscheidt und Internet besser. Dennoch, Assimil 1+ :D

stress only exists if you allow yourself to be stressed. i know that issue well though^^ just take it easy, you have all the time in the world. A wise saying which we use in Austria from time to time "ned stressn, vom hudln kommen die kinder" meaning "don't stress yourself, the kids come by hurrying" xD

YOU WERE IN THE BOOK STORE FOR TWO HOURS CAUSE YOU STARTED FILMING AT THE BEGINNING OF THE HAMILTON ALBUM AND LEFT SOMETIME AFTER ONE LAST TIME... why do I know this I have a problem.
