    That's pretty much what I did when I was looking for a new brand of colored pencil when the Prisma breakage got too annoying-- bought some colored pencils open stock to compare them. I bought a Coloursoft Pale Brown and the Polychromos Cinnamon, hoping to find some good skin tones on the way. I wasn't pleased with either of them as skin tones, but when coloring a Charlene Tarbox Floral Bouquet picture I decided to use the Cinnamon for the basket. When I saw how smooth and grainless the Polychromos went down, I became an instant convert to Polychromos. It's kind of overpowered for hobby coloring, but I don't care. ;-D BTW, with Polychromos it works better to put the lighter color down first, because they're more translucent than Prismas, Just sayin'. I'm not trying to convert you from your preferred brand of colored pencil. ;-D

    oh no I love polychromos too, i have got them for my mum as when I tried them I felt they would suit her better being soft but not so soft as a beginner too soft might have been hard I thought, but now I keep using them too as they are great. :-)

    Don't stop talking Amanda, it's the information that's important and can be the decider between products. I only have a small set of inexpensive watercolour pencils , but your tutorial has given me food for thought and probably for others!! 😊

    Thank you that means a lot, as a couple of videos now I have had a number of comments (to be fair these videos are ones that often expand out of the crafting community and I suspect that may be the issue) saying basically stop talking. In fact some have been so nasty, and very rude words that I actually removed them. But even though I believe that these are not people from our crafting community it does still make you second guess yourself and worry. So i really do appreciate you saying that to me xxx

    I’m looking at purchasing the polychromos in the 120 set from amazon uk for around £137. But I’ve just found the 72 set of the polychromos in the tin for around £155. Which out of the polychromos and the prismacolors do you prefer?

  • @lollilulucrafts

    amber franklin in all honesty they are all great but it comes down to personal choice as to the type of thing you like to colour with. The prismas are much softer, prob have a higher wax content. The polychromos are still creamy but not as soft - less wax content. A nice midway pencil are the Derwent colour soft pencils. For me because I like a very soft feel to my pencils my favs are the prismas but despite that I seem to end up using the derwent the most, but I suspect that is lore to do with the fact that they are so easy to transport in the box. It is hard to give you advice on this other than explain why I personally choose the ones I did (which were the prismas, the polychromos were mums and mum chose the derwents as a gift for me) But a tip for you, which is what I did to choose, because as I said at the beginning it is such personal thing. Purchase one polychromo, one prisma and one derwent (and can I throw another name in the ring for you, it might surprise you it did me. A friend of ours had crayola pencils and they are so lovely!) and any others you might want to try. Get them all in a strong colours, and similar colours too so that you can compare like with like. See how you like the feel of them, does the wax bloom bother you (btw use a feather to dust that away and you won’t get the bloom marking your drawing) what’s the coverage like, how does the colour build up. I then thought I knew which I preferred so I got a second colour in that brand and then tested the blending. I know it might seem a waste of money to order these but one it’s more expensive to buy a whole set and then think 💭 umm not so sure about these, secondly when I chose the colours of these single pencils I picked a strong colour yes but also one that I would use more of so that then it wouldn’t be wasted cos eventually I would need a replacement. And the other couple of pencils from the brand I didn’t end up choosing are now in the top of the prisma box and do get used too. I hope that helps a bit, I’m sorry it’s a long essay of an answer lol! Let me know what you decide to do, I would be interested to know, big hugs Amanda ps check out amazon for individual (and the sets too) if you haven’t already xx

    Lolli Lulu Crafts. I’ve used the coloursofts and I really like them but I would like to try the prismacolor premier and I was wondering what size set I should go for as I have a tin of 24 polychromos, a tin of 24 coloursofts and a tin of 24 procolours. And my mum also purchased me a tin of 72 arteza pencils

    @@amberfranklin4499 If you want my honest opinion I think you need to choose which are the brand for you and then stick to it, Im not being funny promise but I mean it literally cos you will find it better to invest in one brand getting more colours in the same brand that you know will work nicely together, rather than having a few from many brands that may or may not blend together well. Here if you had one brand you would have 60 pencils of the one brand and that is not including the ones your mum purchased. Get a couple of the prisma and see what you think _ literally like I said before just a couple so as not too waste money if you dont like them and then choose one brand that you are going to invest in and build up the colours in. Yes later you can always buy into other brands like I did (but it is different in that I am doing that cos its my job to have different things to show and use) but right now I would def do some trying and then decide which your fav is. Hope that helps and again would love to know what you decide xx

    For beggingners in colored pencil, what is the best between these? I'm from Brazil the price of pencils is so expensive and prismacolor isn't accessible only Derwent and Polychromos

    Personally either the derwent or the polychromo’s. but prob not the prIsmacolor. The reason I say that is that the prisma’s are very soft and so can be harder for a beginner although that’s why I like them as I can really blend a lot with them. However the derwent I also use personally and they are really really nice and a nice medium between being blendable but not so soft as to be difficult to use. Also same with polychromo’s, my mum is a beginner and she uses these and they work reapply well for her. I have tried them as well and really liked them too. Hope that helps xx

    Excellent video. However you got a little confused with complimentary colours on the second lot of circles. The two greens were Actually analagous colours, next to each other on the colour wheel. The last lot of circles were actually complimentary colours, colours opposite each other on the colour wheel. Please don't take this as a criticism to a very helpful video, but colour understanding is very important in any form of artwork. Please keep up the good work

    Oh no not offended at all grateful for the information. I think I was not being prob as literal as that but actually it is still a good point because using that wording is potentially misleading so I will indeed be more careful in the future so thank you xx

    The bottom ones weren’t complimentary either. The opposite of violet is yellow (and green is opposite to red). But that’s alright, the message got across.

    I got a colorsoft 36stk set almost two years ago, I did a portrait but i found them way too waxy and i couldn't really layer them so I dont like them much. Maybe the problem was the paper tho, i don't really know what kind of paper i should be using with these kind of pencils :/ I'm considering about getting the polychromos ones since they are oil based, but after watching your video, i think i have to try a different paper first for my colorsoft and then try the polychromos What do you think? Also, can you suggest me some paper that i can use please?

  • @lollilulucrafts

    @lollilulucrafts

    3 жыл бұрын

    The paper I found is key and the softer and waxing the pencil the more important it becomes if you want to later. In order to layer the paper has to have some tooth to it so that you can gradually build up Layers before completely flattening the tooth. Once flattened you simply cannot add more layers. I use a good quality pencil paper (I will look up the name tomorrow for you - it’s currently 5am I don’t sleep well!) and since I have done that it has made a massive difference. This brand comes in different sizes too which makes it helpful although I tend to go for a4 size as either I can chop it up or if I am doing a slightly bigger image it gives me space around the edges to test my colours as I work. I am terrible at pre planning 😂 hope that helps and if I forget to tell you the name of the brand I use then just please do remind me as bear in mind that as I say it is early right now so my memory is not the best xx

    That's not why prismas break. The reason is the lowered production quality. They never used to break. The reasons boil down to this: thinner leads than before, centering issues in the barrel, cheaper barrels, and not gluing the leads in the barrel like other soft lead brands do to protect them.

  • @lollilulucrafts

    @lollilulucrafts

    well if that is so are you suggesting this is a problem that occurs across brands because I have breakage issues across the brands? 🙂

  • @lollilulucrafts

    That really depends on your colouring preference. What I did when I started was buy one pencil from each company that I thought I might like, of a similar colour to help comparison and then I could try them and see what suited how i like to colour. I would say prismas are the softest, then coloursoft (which I love) and then polychromos if that helps at all. x
