Polovtsian Dances from "Prince Igor" | BORODIN | Arr. Luke Faulkner

So catchy is this Classical melody it reached No. 1 in the UK pop charts in 1955 as "Stranger in Paradise" (Tony Bennett). This is my piano arrangement of the original "Gliding Dance of the Maidens", part of the Polovtsian Dances from the end of act 2 of Borodin's opera Prince Igor.

Wonderful arrangement from Borodin's opera Prince Igor. Congratulations Luke ! 🌻 I hope to see you soon with a recital at Wigmore Hall in London. Last year I wrote information about you in the chat by Wigmore Hall - KZread channel and I don't understand why such a great pianist and composer like you is not invited to Wigmore Hall.

Just Beautiful! What a perfect setting for this piece, Luke. Where was it filmed? There is a very special place in my heart for this music. The first time I heard it was as a kid. I had been given a music box featuring this piece and I would have it opened and listen to it every opportunity I had. So when I heard the single you released sometime ago, I was totally enchanted, just as I am now with this video. Thank you as always, Ros ☺ PS Just now I came across this piece in a Hollywood musical called Kismet.

Hey Luke ! Comment vas tu ?

This is a very nice piece, and of course you play it beautifully, however I find myself wondering the same thing I've wondered before with many artists: why is *this* their most famous piece instead of something that is richer/deeper/more complex/has more of what makes them unique? Perhaps the answer is contained in the question. Short, "catchy" tunes will always be mire widely known than longer, more complex things. This is simple, catchy, easy to like. I also think the Nocturne from the 2nd string quartet is memorable and easy to like, but it does have more complexity to it. They both have what must be one of Borodin"s favorite rhythms, though, and I love it!

It's an interesting question, Abigail! I'd suggest that a catchy melody more readily becomes the enduring totem of a composition than pretty much anything else. As an example, when I say Wagner's Walküre I'd wager the first thing that comes to most people's minds would be the famous "Ride of the Valkyries" motif despite the whole music drama being a sophisticated 5h complex of leitmotifs and narrative development, underpinned by ideas of 19th-century philosophy. Nonetheless, Borodin's quartets (esp. the movement you mention) are amongst the most played in the repertoire - probably because they have some catchy melodies too 😅

@@LukeFaulkner That's true...the Borodin quartets are still very popular. If I practiced what I preached, I'd do more of a deep dive into his works, haha. Thanks for the insightful reply!
