Hey, not to be a nosy know-it-all. But for nearly 25 yrs I was as a precision industrial optician. Here's a trick that lets you know if a piece is completely worked flat. Before grinding, use a waterproof marker or even a simple pencil to color in the surface you are working. Like a crosshatch pattern. Then when all the marker or pencil mark's are gone you are ready to move up to the polish step. Also, to keep your diamond tool flat and not eventually worn out in the middle, please move your piece back and forth. Even if you go barely off the edge of the tool it won't hurt. Also rotate your piece 1/4 turn every few strokes. It keeps everything flat, tool and piece. Do the same thing while polishing your flats. I just want to let you know how to use your diamond tools to their fullest extent. They are pretty pricey to replace. Love, LOVE your channel. All the best for you and your family for the season.

You should look into this polish compound called fabuluster. I finish all of my cabs with it. You just need a bench grinder that they sell at hardware stores and places like that. Then put two felt pads on it instead of grinding wheels. One is an application pad that you apply the compound to, and the other is the polish pad that will polish all of the compound back off of it. When you are finished it will have a mirror polish on it. Good luck!

So I've recently started collecting agates and would like to start cutting/polishing them and have an opportunity to purchase a used DP Genie cabbing machine (at a very affordable price). Question, should I use the money instead to purchase a 6 or 8" flat lap? Or will I be able to polish flat faces just as easily with the cabbing machine? I'm torn, because I know that I can polish rounded/curved rocks much more efficiently on the cabbing machine. Thanks and thanks for sharing your rockhounding/lapidary videos.

Mix diamond paste with eithe water, or alcohol if its water based, petroleum distilate for oil based, spray it onto the lap not dot it, yes they all need lubricants which are applicable to the above. then glassy based products are finished in Cerium oxide, hard not silica ones in collodial silica.

Hi KT, Good question. For basic polishing the main difference is the position that your hand rests at when the rock is on the polishing surface. Otherwise they are essentially the same machine. I have never used the flat lap, but I think the slant cabber is better for use in a seated position.

You are going to have fun with your new toy. I have a small flat lap that I am still learning. I found that it took forever to remove wheel marks from a bad cut on agate using 180 grit.
