Police offer vacation home check in Ferguson Township

FERGUSON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- It's peak vacation season and one Centre County police department is offering their service to make sure homes are safe while residents are away.
Going on vacation is exciting, but according to law enforcement vacation goers may not be the only one anticipating the trip. They said vacations are open season for thieves. That is why the Ferguson Township Police Department wants to remind citizens of the vacation house check program.
The program offers residents the chance to add their property to a list of houses that will be routinely checked by officers while homeowners are away on vacation.
"The guys that are on patrol will actually swing around your house. Often times they will get out and check some doors, check the windows walk around and make sure things are OK. All we ask is that you call us when you are back so we don't rudely awaken you one night," Sgt. Robert Glenny with the Ferguson Township Police Department said.
Signing up for the program is easy. Before leaving town, fill out the department's online forum.
"It gives people peace of mind when they are gone that someone is watching their house and we don't mind doing it at all, that is what we are here for," Glenny said.
Police also advise before leaving for vacation, stop delivery of mail and newspaper service.
If you continue service, ask a neighbor to pick up these items daily.
Police also recommend setting lights on timers and leaving a vehicle in your driveway.
They said give the appearance that your daily routine hasn't changed.
