    I experienced this, though to the most minor degree. Over 10 yrs ago I worked @ my neigborhood 711 & everyday around 5am most of the cops in the area would stop in for coffee & something to eat. They were all in uniform so there was no problem w/that & it was 711's policy that the coffee was always FREE to officers on duty, though we had to charge them for whatever food they got. Everyday there was a guy who would stop in @ the same time in a police type uniform & while m co=worker rang him up I walked around the counter to scrutinize him as I "adjusted" some of the things on the shelf. As it turned out the patch on his sleeve said SECURITY ( he did wear a badge on his uniform) . So the next day when all the officers arrived so did the other guy, he got mad when I charged him for coffee & started yelling so I said in front of the officers " It's 711's policy to give coffee free to all police officers...are you a police officer?". The police took immediate notice waiting for his reply, he paid me, said something under his breath & walked out quickly. One of the officers floowed him out & spoke to him, when he returned he said I probably wouldnt see the security guy @ the store again & the other officers laughed. It was good having the policeas constant customers as the stores were getting robbed alot as this was during thecrack epidemic of the 90's. my appologiesfor anyone who had to read this whole novel of a story but we've had this happen quite a fewtimes out in long island as well as brooklyn & queens

I sometimes have to correct peoples assumptions about my proffesion when they see me on my lunch break. I even went so far as to stop by the fire house and explain that i wasnt intentionally "stealing their glory". They didn't care at all, other than being impressed with my discernment in gear selection. I get used stuff off ebay, but quality. Globe is best imo, the newer the better.

    In Virginia, your incorporated railroad applies with any circuit court where it operates for permission to have railroad police. Once approved the president of the railroad has authority to appoint railroad police who have the same power and authority anywhere in the state as state police including issuing traffic tickets.

He had a stolen flat badge, which is odd shaped. As I recall, he had the stones to try to report as a new recruit. The badge gave him away, and when checked the badge # came up as retired. this is exactly why in my agencies admin manual, unmarked must not be used for routine patrol unless last resort, I.E more officers on duty than there are cars, and honestly at that point the supervisor would probably start pairing officers to one car... Non descript cars (cars excluding tauruses, crownvics which are the main fleet, and tahoes) are not allowed to be used for patrol PERIOD. No exceptions.

    When I lived in Chicago, I was about 3 or 4 miles from the cook county criminal courts, and the county jail, so it wasnt uncommon to see suburban police driving around my neighborhood, lost, and trying to find the courthouse. And some of them would try to pull people over, go figure. Thinking that they had a cook county ticket book, they could ticket anyone in cook county, but then cant explain why they were ticketing in the city at court.

    I think alot has to do with the lack of knowledge, I live in Boston MA and work security for a mall we drive the Ford Escape with a mini orange led light bar that is on all day long ( all the police departments run blue and white lights on their cruisers in my area) I had this lady in front of me at work one day pull over suddenly which people do all the time dropping off passengers and what not so i just waited a second before I went around her, as I did she exited her vehicle getting my attention and she proceeded to ask "do you want me? I thought you were trying to pull me over cause you're light was on" she wasn't elderly or anything middle aged woman with a child in the back and i was just stunned I explained to her " ma'am we keep this light on all day and you only ever pull over for blue and white lights" she giggled and got back in her vehicle I couldn't believe her a tiny little orange light bar where on earth has a police department just ran mini orange light bar I just don't understand where anyone would think to pull over for a orange light. Great video!

    The confusion lies in the fact that there are a variety of approved lighting for differing uses depending on the State. For example, California only allows police to use a blue light and they must also have a forward facing steady red light and optional flashing red lights. Ambulances, fire trucks and licensed armored cars are allowed red lights. Amber lights are used for tow trucks, vehicles which stop on the side of a highway and (with highway patrol approval) private security. In California, a 'light bar' may only be forward of the rearmost portion of the driver headrest on a vehicle approved for red lights, meaning that security, tow trucks, etc must have the lights behind the cab or over the back seat. In Nevada, red and blue lights are used on Nevada Dept of Transportation vehicles. In Washington, some tow trucks have red lights.

    This is becoming a problem in central Texas, too, where I live. Since 2017 there have been several reported cases of a pick-up truck lighting people up late at night. The guys (sometimes there are more than one of them) who get out of the truck are usually wearing shorts or just very common clothes, like they're not even trying to be dress like cops. Once they were dressed in all black! What's more concerning though is they're always doing it very late at night, usually around midnight, and they always seem to target women, so people think they must be trying to rob people and possibly rape them. It's probably not just some assholes who like to lecture and browbeat people.

Organizations do that all the time; Schools, airports, railroads, parks... I have even seen neighborhoods, bridges(actual bridges..like the roads suspended in the air kind), tunnels, beaches, corporate buildings/industrial sites, even fire/ems departments all employing real state of California POST certified and licensed peace officers. I know of a department in my area where they only employ 14 officers including a chief, a lieutenant, three sergeants, and two FTOs...like wtf? This isn't rural Georgia where your population is you and your many cousin wives and husbands and their many cousins-wives and husbands. All you need is cash, an approval from the sheriff or governor in conjunction with POST, and a specified jurisdiction, and the general area where your ops will be taking place(there is a difference between the two).

    Our state pd has unmarked cars (Tauruses and Explorers, with a Crown Vic here and there) and undercover cars. We were driving down the freeway, a red camaro passes, then a red impala. Guy in back calls it as an undercover, they moved the civilian antenna, or changed the exhaust or something minor like that. Impala lights up the camaro, turns out it was a drug sting. Most undercover cars are good disguises, but some details they just botch.

    I thought that impersonating a police officer was a felony, how could the courts take it as anything less? Have you seen these "concealed carry weapons" badges? You can get them in almost any style imaginable online (check eBay), and they even sell them in a flash wallet at BassPro. I've seen guys with them and just shake my head; if you (civilian) have to draw your weapon in self defense, and have one of these on your belt, or a chain around your neck, it's not going to go well for you. And, having one of these badges on your person, how far away are you from being accused of impersonating a police officer?

    The Yankee Marshal (no I'm not a fanboy I think he's a *&^^$) hates them as well, and only had one good reason to carry them: If someone sees the badge on your belt next to your gun, they are less likely to think you are a gangbanger trying to do stickups and so they won't call 911 saying "Man With a Gun"!

  • @Timothy-NH

    @Timothy-NH

    I have no idea who The Yankee Marshal is, will have to investigate that. On the other hand, if someone notices it and know's that it's not a real police bade, the 911 call becomes "man with gun impersonating a police officer"

    It would depend on the state. Courts don't make laws, the legislative branch does. Yes I've seen them. Civilian is not an accurate term. Unless the LEOs are MPs, then they're civilians. Private citizen is an accurate term. As for simply having one, it's not illegal, nor should it be. It would be quite a stretch: you'd have to prove intent, and you'd have to demonstrate, most likely, some degree of harm. Both of which could be easily mitigated by the fact that: 1. the badge does not contain the word "police;" 2. there was no intent to commit a crime. No, I don't use one, nor do I endorse them. Nevertheless, I'd be willing to see your point if you can demonstrate the harm such badges present.

  • @robbm6359

    @robbm6359

    I was a licensed security officer in FL and still have a couple of badges. One is somewhere in my house??? I keep an active shooter bag in my SUV. It's basically a well stocked med kit with some other things that could come in handy in a bad situation. I keep one of my old badges in that bag. The reason being, if god forbid there was an active shooter situation or something similar, it is hard for responding law enforcement to determine who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Having a badge, any badge, even that CWP badge, that is visible from a distance decreases the chances of you being shot by mistake, at least long enough for you to tell the deputies you are not the active threat they're looking for. While I don't do this myself I know a couple of people who wear the CWP badges when open carrying. They claim, and I believe them, that when the average citizen sees a badge next to their weapon they are far less likely to call 911. That may seem like it's no big deal, but every time someone calls in "Man with a gun" Deputies (more than 1)drive extremely fast putting themselves and the public in danger, then they arrive guns drawn with a heightened stress level, putting you and others in danger, all for something that is legal and could have been avoided if the call had never been made.

    free field training I couldnt agree more. There are legit police and then security guards. There is a very solid line as to what each can and cannot do. Police go through at least 6 months training. Know how much I did? A 30 minute online course. That says something about how under qualified security guards are for anything beyond keeping a watchful eye out. That’s literally all a security guard does. We are the human embodiment of a security camera.

    Great video! Winds me up when police get shifty about showing warrant cards (or the US equivalent though). Here in the UK, you literally cannot go on duty without your warrant card, because that card is physical proof you are a constable of the law in the UK. I got asked loads, especially when working undercover, and I was always happy to show my card. Even if it was a tense situation, it's pretty easy to hold a baton/spray in one hand and your card in the other (and feel like something out of Miami Vice!). I've been stopped a few times over the years by undercover cars, with officers wearing very obscure clothing, and it's SO unprofessional to not show your warrant card when asked. That card is a mutual trust ticket (if you trust the validity of the card, and the police). I've personally got no issue with defending myself against a fake police officer, and could probably do so quite effectively, but smaller men and some women may feel extremely threatened by an officer who looks suspect, and won't show any form of ID. You DO have to prove you're a police officer: the uniform is clothing, not your actual power of arrest. Also helps when you mention you're ex-police, and within 30 seconds the officer is having a bit of banter, because he can pick up the cues that you were in the job. Things like not knowing your shoulder number, station, and callsign off by heart, instantly are a baaaaad sign. You don't hear any good officer radio "Uhhhh, ummm, errrrrr, Echo Hotel Two Six? Yeah, Two Six, back request"!

I've been arrested 1 time in my life for basically being stupid while drunk in public, and I've never drank since. Getting arrested for being drunk woke me up to the fact I had a drinking problem, and was enough to set me straight. Same with a lot of people who get picked up once

    Very good video. I once was stoped for impersonation I had a amber light in my back window (used only for storm chasing or helping some one broke down on the shoulder with a Tire or jump start) one day it was late and dark and I cam across a tree laying in the road. I stoped turned on my light and b4 I got out was assessing for power lines that may have been brought down with the tree. After I saw that there was no threat of electric shock I put my vest on and started to work on getting it removed. At that time cell phones wherent that accessible so I wasn't going to knock on some ones door that late at night 1am in the morning. Had a car pull up behind me and the oncoming lane was open directed them thru they just stayed there do I was like ok just stay there I'll be done in a few. I got it out of the way off the road and got back in my car drove 6 miles cowards my home then that car turned out to be one of my city's unmarked units. He with 5 other detectives started coming in boxed my car in and excessively with guns drawn pull me out of my car. Then they started searching through my car all they found was my 2way radio (hand held business band radio) my cb hand held cb and my amber light, chainsaw, traffic cones, cameras, storm chasing equipment and traffic vest that said skywarn they claimed I was the one pulling people over and I said with what a amber light mounted to the rear lol. They wrote me a summons for court and won. Long story short back then people didn't care for any thing any one with a flashing light or spot light was impersonating. All the lady saw was the spot light shining around and called the cops for she didn't know what was going on. I got out of that do to showing video of what happend since I had a police dash cam. B4 dash cams where cool for every one I was impersonating an officer because the red light on the front of camera. Just be careful what you do since then I have set my vehical up with Amber and clear lights just to show I am not a cop or trying to impersonate a fire police officer or anyone of authority. And it's legal for what I do now for the roadside rescue and stormchasing still. Thx for the video and fig I would share this with you.

    Personally, selling a car at auction with lights is almost unheard of. Light systems are expensive. Now, I ain't stopping for an unmarked police vehicle at night on Turnpike or Highway. Now, before I get verbally beat up I will tell you what I will do. First, maintain my speed, hopefully not speeding? Then I will call the, for instance, the Florida Highway Patrol via their *59 (probably got that wrong) but you get my point. I will ask 911 operator if there is a car where I am that is a real cop? Okay, I will also ask dispatcher if the guy is "real" to tell the cop my situation and hope I don't get shot! I tell my wife not to stop if it late at night to do the same thing. Why? SOUTH FLORIDA is FULL of auctioned cruisers still with "cattle pusher" on the front end. Some are realitively new and in a state of great appearance!

    Thats basically what the police say to do though. If you are being pulled over and you suspect it is an impersonator, keep driving. Just slow down, find somewhere well lit with security cameras where you can pull over and call the dispatchers to confirm its an officer. If doing exactly that got him into more trouble, (especially if it was at night) it should have been an open and shut court case where he would have had whatever the officer tried to put on him reduced back to the original charge.

    Thank you for outlining the many different ways ppl can impersonate law enforcement. I used to only be in the "no unmarked cars" camp. But in light of this new information, I now believe we need to shift to having no traffic enforcement whatsoever, unless someone is driving so recklessly that they're putiing others in harm, or unless police are merely directing traffic. No one should be put in a position of being harmed, terrorized or killed because they have a tail light out, etc. Let the real police snap a photo of the traffic infraction, have it logged by their dept, then mail it to the owner of the car (by license plate ID). The public and police would remain far more safe. Unmarked vehicles should only be used for undercover work, and ALL vehicles should have a front and back plate that marks the vehicle as law enforcement. I believe ppl are finally getting sick and tired of being fleeced by law enforcement anyway. Not using a blinker on a completely empty road can now rob you of $200.00 or more. Get a drunk driver off the road? Yes, of course. Rob the public for a faulty light or other bs? No, and it needs to stop.

    About 40 years ago, my brother comes flying in his 68 Coronet. Pounded on my door wanting in he's a little frantic he thinks he picked up a police impersonator, that has been shaking people down for cash on the highway. So while we're sitting there and he's explaining this, a 1979 Dodge Diplomat maroon in color. Pulls up in my driveway sideways blocking the vehicles. And this guy wearing a Levi Jacket, Levi's and a black T-shirt. Gets out and start walking up into my parking area looking at the vehicles, so I step out and asking there's something I can do for you son. And he wants to know where the guy driving the Cornet is. And I asked him in just who in the fuck are you and what you doing in my yard this time of night? And he shows me a badge on his belt and his sidearm next to his badge using his cop like Maglite them Point them out. And I tell him a badge and a gun don't mean anything boy, you got some picture ID? He says he don't have to show it to me . Better yet you got a business card? No business card You got a name to go with that badge? What is your supervisor's name and what is their contact number? And he pointed to his gun in his badge again with his flashlight beam and told me that's all the authorization he needed. And I would be arrested for obstructing an officer if I didn't answer where the driver of the Cornet was. And he put his hand on his side arm as to intimidate me. And I explained to him son you better look over my left shoulder. You pull at sidearm on me and pointed at me without proving to me that you're actually a police officer and not just some asshole with the badge and a gun. See that gun barrel sticking out that window? That's my younger brother who's a crack shot, so he don't need to put a red dot in the middle of your forehead at this range. So he he is looking over the iron sights of my 6.5 Swedish Mauser, and at this range he can't miss putting one in the middle of your forehead. So show me some ID besides your badge and gun. And he told me that he was Lieutenant so and so and he didn't have to show me shit. And I was now under arrest for threatening a police officer with a firearm. And I told him you know what bitch you better get the fuck out of here and I started belly bumping him telling him get back in your fucking car. You're a God damn phony cop. Those aren't even police rims or hubcaps on that diplomat. There's no roll cage. No Shield. Unmarked cars in this area. Have a roll cage and shield. That Radio Shack scanner on the front seat isn't the police radio. And this whole time he's telling me I'm under arrest for assault on a police officer. And I yell back up at my double-wide Steve call the cops. and he yells back he already did when the asshole pulled up and they're on their way. And my little 5 foot 6 in 150 lbs long-haired long-bearded dressed in black leather from head to foot little biker ass, intimidated this 6-foot something guy back into his vehicle. And as he was starting to back out of my driveway the real cop showed up. And the fun began. My brother Steve put away the 6.5 and didn't come out of the house for nothing. I stood there with my hands on top of my head until they made sure that I wasn't the one that they had been called on. .And when they ran my name, of course the normal 6 cars police backup showed up. At damn near 60 years old and 100% disabled. They still send six cars of back up when they run my name. which I think is kind of flattering, that they're still at scared of my beat down broke down old ass. To still send six cars when they run my name . But I digress . . the guy in the Diplomat. Well first of all, he got it for impersonating a police officer, when he tried to lie his way out of it. And for caring unpermitted firearm. Driving a vehicle altered to resemble an emergency vehicle. I think that's how they put the blue light he put on his dashboard. Attempted assault with a deadly weapon. And the list went on because he pulled about 50 people over and shook them down for $20 cash each. I got a thank you, from the police officers. Seems they've been after the guy for a while. and I was the only one that would stand up to him. I told him he couldn't provide me i d, a business card, and he didn't know who his shift Lieutenant's name was. all he could do was point at his badge and his gun which is flashlight. you can't provide me with simple answers and prove you're a cop. And try to intimidate me with the gun in my own yard, is a good way to get dead. Is what I told them.

    You're allowed to have guns in Canada. There's less gun deaths because our population is one tenth of The States, so less people to shoot each other.

    Would asking to have a supervisor come out be a good way to ameliorate ones risk? Maybe not go say that right off, but if it seems fishy, seems like a good fail safe to me. Or if you are suspicious, call the local PD to verify they have an agent pulled me over?

    I was surprised to see no mention of whether the "officer" follows the law, or anything about situations where you don't have to do what the other person is telling you. I think the problem may be more that this massive level of obedience is triggered by something so easily faked.

    Here in Arkansas you can get cars with lights still on them, ram bars, and the cages in the back, some logos aren't even all the way off on some of the cars.

    Four, maybe five years ago in Henderson, NV I looked behind me to see a police black and white (well, blue and white in this case) with its red and blue lights flashin' away. I was stopped at the light going straight, and the police car pulled up beside me to turn left onto the highway. There was an older gentleman, maybe in his late sixties, behind the wheel. He looked nice enough; a grandfatherly sort. Maybe a little oblivious or distracted. He clearly wasn't a cop, either. The car was marked with Henderson Police, had emergency lights on the top of the car and the front bumper, and it had the flood lights over the mirrors on the sides. Towards the back of the vehicle, on the side nearest the trunk, was a sticker: "NOT IN SERVICE". The driver had doubtless bought that car in an auction, and you could tell by looking at him he had NO IDEA the lights were on. He had flipped them on by mistake some time during his drive. The light turned green, and the gentleman made his left turn. Immediately after he cleared the intersection, another police car, this time one driven by an officer, zoomed through after him. A cop had seen him, and was going in to pull him over. I obviously don't know what happened to the guy, but he was clearly pulled over for having emergency lights running while being a civilian in a decommissioned police car. I'm worried he got into a lot of shit. It's not too difficult to imagine a judge saying that not realizing the emergency lights were going is not an excuse, or that the judge didn't believe it was a mistake and threw the book at him. I really hope the cop gave him a break and he didn't end up locking him up for impersonating an officer or some other felony just because he accidentally bumped a switch in his new car. I guess I went off on a bit of a tangent, but this story does apply to the video. The driver in this case wasn't a bad guy, but he had bought a marked, fully functional police car, and the only thing that told the public it wasn't an "on duty" vehicle was the "NOT IN SERVICE" sticker. Someone could easily buy such a car at an auction, rip off the sticker, pick up a police uniform and handcuffs off of Amazon, and have the ability to pull over anyone they wanted and cart them off to God knows where.

    In the UK it is completely legal to have an emergency vehicle unless you either: Use it to impersonate a police officer OR use it to skip traffic

    In a township where I live next to has a few truly unmarked vehicles. What i mean by that is even the plates are 'normal'. They will pull you over and wait for a marked unit to show up and then a ticket is issued.

    I disagree. Prevention can be a good thing when implemented properly. For instance, a local police department could have a phone app that people can use to get a picture of an officer, that is active on their roster, using their name or badge#. Someone pulls it up, sees the picture and can match it to the officer standing outside their car, and all is good.

    What is the standard for unmarked cars? I have seen a lot of unmarked cars and recently I have seen cars that are Toyota Camrys and and Hunday. What is that about? Surely there is a legal standard in most states.
