Great coverage of this story. I appreciate that you pointed out that none of the drone regulations on the books would have prevented this, and that the police have taken action using property damage laws rather than focusing on the drone. As someone who lives in Missouri, thanks! We unfortunately do not have any state based preemption laws… and incidents like this can lead to towns and cities opening a dialogue about drone use in their area, to see where they can restrict pilots from flying.

Thank you John! Appreciate the feedback from someone inside the State. I think the Sheriff's office did a good job dealing with the criminal over the drone.

@@Geeksvana They definitely did and I’m glad about that - but let’s be honest, they know this guy is probably screwed. Even if there were no federal drone laws, they had what they needed in this case to put him under arrest. Drone incidents in the past here in Missouri have lead to small towns exactly like this one crafting draconian and illegal ordinances. For example in Randolph County Missouri there are laws that dictate take off and landing within county limits require filing a notice with the county clerk… and you can be fined up to $100 if you fail to do so.

The reason why someone would do something like this completely stumps me. The word "imbecile" springs to mind. There is certainly something seriously wrong with the private pilot. I can only surmise that the private drone pilot didn't realise he was attacking a police drone. Even then, what a stupidity.

Agreed! I thought the same thing re not knowing. Although the police report mentions a confrontation the previous evening between the arrested man and police... Makes you wonder. Of course trying to rationalise the irrational is a task!

ChatGPT suggests these: 1. **Skytrespasser:** Merging "sky" with "trespasser," this term emphasizes the intrusion into personal airspace. 2. **Copteroffender:** Combining "copter" (a colloquial term for drone) with "offender" to highlight the person's wrongful actions. 3. **Aeroboundarybreaker:** Blending "aero" (related to air) with "boundary breaker," indicating someone who crosses the limits using a drone. 4. **Dronetrespassist:** A fusion of "drone" and "trespass," highlighting the person's inclination to invade private spaces. 5. **Hoverhoodlum:** Merging "hover" with "hoodlum," this term suggests a person using a drone for mischief or disruptive activities. 6. **AirspaceIntruder:** Combining "airspace" with "intruder" to pinpoint the violation of personal airspace boundaries. 7. **UnmannedMenace:** Emphasizing the potential danger posed by the misuse of unmanned aerial vehicles. 8. **Dronebandit:** Merging "drone" with "bandit" to describe someone using a drone for unlawful or intrusive purposes. 9. **Skystalker:** Combining "sky" with "stalker" to convey the idea of a person using a drone for unwarranted surveillance. 10. **Aerocreep:** A blend of "aero" and "creep," indicating someone who uses a drone in a socially inappropriate or creepy manner.

Knowing how the press exaggerate and sensationalize everything, "attacked" could mean various things. Was there an actual collision?....I'm guessing not as they say it "evaded". Could this just be someone flying in close proximity to the police drone? If so, how close? A few feet, then maybe it was an "attack". But what if it was flying 30-40 feet away? Was if flying at high speed? ...or slow? Is this an actual attack, or is it the police getting away with over reacting...? I'm not saying it was, I'm just speculating. With the police and the press hungry for anti drone scandal, can we trust what we are told?

Sean You said Positive press the key word being press I think once we as a drone community manage to get the press to segregate the good from the bad not just label everyone the same, it will go along way to help the drone community get the general public onside it's like saying a police force is something when 99%of officers are good people and do a great job it's only 1% are bad but everyone perceives it to be the entire force because they read things word for word Please note percentages are used for example only and may not be accurate lol

Not saying that he is, but then not saying he isn't. This could've been attack under the guise of a 4th Amendment violation. That is to say the civilian pilot believes that the sheriff using a drone could be seen as a violation of the 4th Amendment not understanding that a drone for LEO's is no different from a helicopter.

  • @kensteele3363

Soon we will see a law that says no drone can fly within 150 feet of a police drone.... This is not new. It's called a "ringer" where the police would love to have stricter laws but they need a trigger to make their case. Not going to be able to prove this but it wouldn't take much for the police to make a deal with a known criminal to "cause an incident" so they could justify new laws. It happens all the time; police do this quite often. Again, this may not be happening here but anytime you have a situation where only one incident can cause the laws to be changed, we are all at risk.
