I've been seeing some very insightful comments with regards to the difference in price that I mentioned, and I want to address them. First of all, many people have pointed out that the prices I quoted for the UK included the 20% VAT in addition to the 10% tariff. Meanwhile, the Chinese prices do not, and electric vehicles are currently exempt from similar sales taxes here in China. These prices, do not, however, include any other subsidies offered by the government, and pointing to subsidies involved in the production of the vehicle isn't relevant to this discussion, as those savings could just as easily be passed on to consumers abroad as they could domestically. First of all, this was not an intentional decision to deceive the viewer on my part. Chock it up to the fact that I'm American, and unlike in Europe, our companies aren't required to include all relevant taxes in their pricing, so it didn't occur to me to consider this factor. That's my mistake, and I apologize. As such, a more accurate comparison would require us to compare the UK prices minus VAT and tariff with the Chinese prices quoted. Taking VAT and tariff into account, the prices would be roughly £42,000 (single motor) and £46,900 (dual motor) for a Polestar 4 in the UK. That's clearly much closer to the price of the Chinese models, which are equivalent to about £33,000 and £41,000. As I mentioned at the end of the video, those prices have since been dropped significantly, so they are now equivalent to £26,300 and £37,300. That's a difference of about £15,700 and £9,600 vs the UK price. I understand that there are other factors, such as shipping and the fact that, unlike China, Europe isn't a unified market, so it costs more to market a vehicle, but I don't think such factors can explain that big of a price difference, do you? Ultimately, I stand by my belief that competition is a major factor in the way these cars are priced in China vs the rest of the world, but I realize that my failure to address the issues above worked to weaken that argument, and I appreciate those of you in the comments who offered genuine, helpful critiques and additional information. I hope you were still able to enjoy the video, and I thank you for choosing to watch our content!

Polestar is a Swedish company (big part is indeed owned by Geely, the "mother company" of Volvo, but the rest is publicly traded under the ticker PSNY on the New York Stock Exchange). They will produce Polestar 3 in the USA (South Carolina). Polestar 4 for the US market is planned to be produced in South Korea.

It's quite a dissappointment. I tried to be positive about Geely taking over ownership of Volvo and now Polestar, thinking it might be a good opportunity for them to price their EV's cheaper than competitors for their benefit. Instead only China has that luxury lol, which sucks for the rest of us. But it was explained as to why that is pretty well in the video I guess. Just a dissappointment, looked forward to cheaper but still high quality vehicles from Volvo and Polestar.

Yes, they can and will export Polestar 3:s made in America to Europe. Which lets them reduce the tariffs they have to pay on imported cars from China. This will help improve their profitability of the Polestar 2 which will continue to be made in China - and the Polestar 4 that will most likely begin deliveries with cars from China, to then gradually shift over to Korean production for the US market in 2025.

Selling for twice the price outside China really isn’t working for them though. Here in Australia Polestar sells less than 100 per month compared to Teslas well over 1000 per month. They would be far better off being more competitive on price even though the specs are good. They don’t have the reputation yet and it’s obvious that very few are going to risk their money on a Chinese car in a Swedish suit.

  • @maximilianholland

Also the European/UK quoted prices include mandatory SALES TAX (waived on EVs in China), which adds ~20% to the (post-import-and-shipping) price. Quoted price also includes minor fees totaling around 110 GBP for license plate and first registration). However, your point about competition explains all of the rest of the price difference. Shipping is roughly 1k euros (900 GBP) and import tax to EU/UK adds 10%. So 33,000 GPB base price in China would go to 34,000 after shipping, 37,400 after import tax, and then 44,880 GBP after the 20% sales tax. The rest is overpricing due to lack of competition, as you say.

You left out charging and EV mileage aspects. There is a KZread video that shows how amazingly well Polestar handles on a frozen lake. BTW, I have owned stock in Geely since the 1990s when they went from making refrigerators to making cars. If Geely did not buy Volvo from Ford, Volvo would have gone out of existence and there would be no Polestar. P.S. Geely also was considering making a flying car called the Terrafugia. Check it out also on KZread. Finally, Geely sent a satellite up which I presume will be used as a GPS and also for possibly working with autonomous driving.

Its eyewatering comparing prices for the same EV´s in europe and china. Some EV´s cost half in china than other markets around the worlds. The market regulates everything I guess. A VW ID3 is only 16k in china after a recent price drop, competion is hard there and the market is big. But some cars like the EV MG´s also make it to europe in numbers and challenge the " established" brands on home turf...

And they are usually at least 30-50% more expensive than their European or North American counterpart. Now, I have moved to canada and want to get a Ev. Then the same model or comparable model coat 2x as much here than the Chinese market. Something such as MG4 x power that I want dont offer in this market, nor can I travel south of the boarder to get one. Unless I have the financial mucle to homologate the type at Transport Canada. 😂

As far as communication with others users is concerned. There is no need for a rear window for that. You can use other methods used by van or truck drivers that also do not have rear window. Such as for example the turn signal. When you want to say thank you to somebody you just quickly make a left then right blinking a few times. The other user will understand. A hand outside the window can also do the job but it’s less practical.

I greatly admire China's progress and development in the automobile sector. What's more, my next vehicle will be from a Chinese company, but from a private company. Despite that, I must admit that I don't like the fact that there is an oversupply of brands and models from state-owned companies (for example, Chery, has many brands and some with very bad names), I think they do a lot of damage to other private competitors with a lot of potential. I am very saddened by the news about Hiphi stopping their production, their vehicles are spectacular. I was also very saddened by Byton's case. If these conglomerates invested in start-ups instead of launching their own brands, it would be much better.

amazing price with 100kwh battery. Many people in the comments refute your reason why pricing is much lower in China. If it was government subsidies, then why not just pocket the extra profit. EV competition in China is just intense which is the reason they can come up with great design, features, and specs at a rapid rate (almost each month there is a better EV to buy). You simply pocket government money as extra profit if there is little competition. These people pickup up Western Mainstream media hate on Chinese EV subsidies. MSM hates it to support ageing legacy auto and because this correct way to spend or overspend government money.

The Polestar 4's seat belts are "Swedish Gold." They appeared on Polestar Volvos. In fact, this applies to any Volvo or Polestar with those seat belts. And do you have a link of who tuned the Polestar 4? Because, as far as I know, all Polestars are tuned in Europe. The Polestar 5 is being tuned in England. This car looks like a raised sedan in terms of lines. But I understand it is big in the metal. I like your reviews. For me, this is a Polestar-fied Zeekr001. Nice car. But I prefer the more Volvo-based Polestar designs like the 2, 3, 5. The 6 is OK but I don't see the need for a Roadster and think Polestar should update the 2 to a new model (probably call it a 7). I'd also say Polestar is a Swedish company. They're very much like Volvo, only sportier. But same philosophy and since they've tuned Volvos from the 1990s, they really base most of what they are on Volvos while sometimes using shared Geely bits to bring down costs.

You’re right about the seat color, would be much more accurate to call them gold. I’m sorry I can provide a link for the tuning of the suspension, this was based on conversations with people within Polestar here in China. I was careful to say that it was done by a team based in China, not necessarily a team made up only of Chinese engineers. I’m sure there were experienced foreign engineers involved. Yes, Polestar is a Swedish brand according to its own lore, but I’m just pointing out that it is majority owned by Geely (50.5%), the rest belonging to Volvo.

@@Wheelsboy Volvo has sold much of its shares to Geely and now retain about 18 percent. The reason I say it is Swedish is because it is headquartered and managed there and of course Polestar was founded in Sweden. I like Geely's style of ownership. They tend not to change established brands and infuse them with cash. Of course the brands will use common parts to cut down on costs but will also have their own parts to create their own feel. Now, although Volvo has sold the shares, they still are very close to Polestar in terms of shared development of Polestar cars and servicing them. If you look close at Polestar there are so many Volvo parts in most of them. Even the paint colors and interior materials are almost exactly the same as Volvos. So, Volvo and Polestar will remain close brands. I think the Polestar 4 has a chance to be Polestar's best seller since it has the crossover height and is priced in a bracket that is more accessible to many buyers than the Polestar 3 flagship crossover.. Great job on the review.

It has a gage cluster... Somehow it would bothered me if it didn't have one even if I find the lack of gage cluster stupid and dangerous. Polestar is Volvo's expérimentale brand. But the fact that the EX30 doesn't have one baffles me. For a brand so proud of its safety credentials.

I'm sure this is going to be the future trend while the energy stored in a battery will always be at a premium... but this looks JUST like a model Y from the side. It's not a criticism, it's an observation. I'd sooner buy a Fiat than a Chinese car. My reservations about the Chinese are that severe. This should have been a Volvo though, and it's very pretty.

The interior is a bit of a letdown in design. The screen is a nice size but it's kind of trapped between the "Here's a big screen!" minimalism of the Tesla, and something that's part of the dash like a Mercedes. The small Volvo SUV has a better looking interior. I could also really use a bit bit of color. This isn't a Polestar exclusive issue, but when the console doesn't have anything mechanical in it, why make this giant open area that's hard to reach, and then build a wall around the driver with the dash? Just to get a cup holder? I prefer the solution with a large, closed storage area, and less of a border between driver and passenger. This looks a bit cramped, even though I'm sure it isn't. 3 miles/Kw/hr is also nothing amazing on the efficiency front. The Model Y, for example, can go this far with a 20% smaller battery.

@@faithosadebe5293 I don't understand your point, the range of this is the same situation. It's that longer distance if you drive it to 0% in the Polestar. You've just spent more money to recharge it each time. My point is that the Model Y, regardless of if it's 80%-30% or 100-0, goes as far with a smaller battery because it is more efficient. That also makes it lighter, which means it uses less battery just to lug the battery around... So, respectfully, I don't see your point or why it's so clever that you're laughing at your joke?

The basic-heading PPP for each pair of economies can be computed directly by taking the geometric mean of the price relatives between them for the two kinds of rice. This is a bilateral comparison. The PPP between economies B and A can be computed indirectly: PPP C/A × PPP B/C = PPP B/A. Take Switzerland: there they earn a lot but also have hundreds erotic expenses. In China they earn less but also pay less. If western Europeans and US Americans would get Chinese prices that literally would be parasitic leeching on China. If Chinese directly buy something from Western Europe or the US on the other hand you'd demand that they pay US and western European prices. The only way to be really cheaper than the competition is to have a higher degree of automation, robotics, AI and a higher vertical integration - if your tech is only similar to the competition. To be more expensive you need tech no one else has yet.
