Polestar 2 Pilot Assist and Active Cruise Control

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is all about the Pilot Assist and Active Cruise Control functions on the Polestar 2. I also cover the speed limit, roast sign recognition and basic cruise control functionality.
The Polestar 2 active cruise control is very good and the pilot assist works very well too. The video demonstrates how these features work and how they are displayed on the screen in front of the driver. The road sign recognition system doesn't seem to be quite as consistent and is a great idea in theory but the results are not consistent.

The roadsign recognition in the Netherlands is pretty spot on! 80% of the time I check when I pass a sign and it instantly updates. If even shows 100 (TIME) on the dash because here you can drive 130kmh after 7PM and 100 between 6 AM and 7PM. I really love the Pilot Assist, been doing 1,5 hour drives on it with just Pilot Assist. If you put your knee gently to the steering wheel that's enough, or lean a finger on either side of the wheel. Once you get to know its limitations it feels like a very nice collab between you and the car. Definantly made me arrive more relaxed then the usual 1,5h drive! I hear that they want to make lane assist tech mandatory by 2030 here which I think is a good thing! Also the fact that even with it disengaged, if you hit the side markings of the road it will gently steer you back! And if it happens 3 or 4 times it triggers the driver alert warning, time to stop for coffee! 😁 Tested that! Awesome video once again!

You can increase/ decrease the ACC speed in 1mph increments too by pressing and holding on the + or - buttons on the left of the steering wheel

Another nice demonstration. Thanks for the effort you put into producing these. I hope they get the speed limit recognition sorted. That would be a super useful feature on some of my journeys. Not ordered one yet, waiting for a test drive to be organised within a reasonable drive of East Anglia but your videos are certainly tempting me towards placing an order sooner! Would it be possible to do a comparison of the economy on a journey using ACC vs one without it?

I think it's a great and informative video. I have one BUT which is not related to your video perse but the fact that this technology is being demonstrated as being a novelty. I own a 2016 VW Touran which is already equipped (not standard) with both Adaptive Cruise Control, with Active Lane Assist and also Traffic Jam Assist. Combined I think is even more than what the Polestar 2 offers in the year 2022. As long as I hold my hands on the steering wheel, it does exactly the same as the Pilot Assist, keep you in lane and at a distance to the car in front of use, using also radar and camera (Bosch technology actually). Traffic Jam Assist even means that if you drive less than -I believe- 12 kp/h - crawl speed- you don't even have to hold the steering wheel in a traffic jam. On top if, the car is equipped - and I tested it- with a system that will automatically slow down and bring the car to a full stop if the car thinks you are incapacitated. I.e. when you don't hold the steering wheel for 12 seconds, it will first start with an audio warning, then later a second audio warning, followed by briefly hitting the brakes -to try to shake you up and wake you up-. In stead of just disengaging, which is what most cars do, it will actually then turn on the emergency indicators, move the car to the slowest lane(!) or the shoulder and bring the car to a controlled stop. Again, this is a system from 2016. With functions I actually don't see in most modern cars. I might make a video about it to demonstrate it.

I also have mine set to ACC - just have to remember to turn it off when leaving a motorway or duel carriage way. My wife likes using the Limit setting around towns as the radar she thinks, seems more constant there, other than I would say not picking up 20mph limits quite often.

Surprised this tech is being discussed as new. This has been around for quite a while. My 2014 Golf had ACC and my 2018 Tiguan had lane assist and sign recognition. These should now be standard features IMO.

Great insight into actual Polestar 2 ownership and congratulations on 1k subs All the videos showing P2 are very positive but the huge downside is lack of availability ! If I’m spending 50k I want to kick the tyres, sit in it and drive it on an extended run (couple of days)! P2 is performance division of Volvo who are owned by Chinese company Geely therefore every town has a Volvo dealership. So I should be able to go to my local Volvo dealer....having one showroom and travelling live roadshows just ain’t good enough. My local dealer tells me they’ll service it, we’ll they should sell it as well !!!

Looking forward to trying this out. Thanks for the demo. Now, if only my boot (mainly under the divider flap and in the lower boot) would stop filling up with water. Can't work out where the water ingres is from. I'm guessing it's the rubber gasket around the hatch opening that has a defect and is letting water on from somewhere. The pull handle to raise the boot up to reveal the lower boot was filled with later, though strangely no water actually on top of the boot material. Just under the divider flap and in the lower boot! Totally weird!

Had my Polestar 2 for about 6 months now and stopped using Pilot Assist almost entirely. It's tried to kill me multiple times. Anyone else experienced it turning into a turn or ignoring obvious and clearly defined turning roads? Anyone experienced it wanting to position the car so passenger side wheels are ON the dotted lane division?

  • @rikh8796
    @rikh87963 жыл бұрын

Is there a minimum speed limit at which you can set or enable the (adaptive) cruise control? For example in my e-Golf I couldn't set it below 20 (kmh) even though the adaptive part would slow you to 0 and bring you up to speed again. In some other cars you can't even enable the cruise control until you've passed a certain threshold (sigh). So how is that for the Polestar 2? Also thanks for the videos, I greatly enjoy watching them and am definitely reconsidering the Void now. It looks stunning in your videos 😍

I’ve a Kia E Niro and it has all of those driver assistance modes, I’ve even found that coming up to a round about with a car in front slowing down I slow down, then as I enter the roundabout the car realises and as I go around the roundabout it doesn’t try to speed up until I’ve extended the roundabout.

My XC60 knows when I am on a motorway and tells me the limit of 70 but also recognises variable limits on motorways as well. I’m surprised that the Polestar doesn’t seem to do that. Hope they fix it as I’m ordering one for August delivery. Where the Volvo fails badly on telling me speed limits is in towns where the limit varies from 20 to 30.

Pilot Assist on my XC 60 is great. On a service visit I got a new V90 for the day it’s Pilot Assist braked the car into corners without a car being in front. Does the Polestar do this? It’s a feature which Volvo didn’t add to my car on the service visit .

Similar to my XC60. It works well in stop/start traffic too, but be aware that once the car stops you need to select the a Pilot assist button on the left of the steering wheel. Prior to an update, it felt like the car was on the sea due to it possibly calculating the accurate middle of the lane position. Is a good system. Good video once again.

I totally agree that the speed-limit recognition needs fixing. I think it does use both camera and map data and, in my experience, the camera works fine but the map data is hopeless (at least in the UK). I really like the speed limiter function (and it would be even better if the speed-limit recognition was improved so that the auto speed limiter could be used). I also like the adaptive cruise control, but unfortunately it requires navigating through the central screen menus to switch between speed limiter and adaptive cruise control, so I rarely use adaptive cruise control. I have yet to find any use for the pilot assist. Sure, it seems to work well at recognising the lanes, but what's the point if you have to apply force to the steering wheel yourself anyway? If you're doing that, you might as well be steering unassisted.

  • @farodopi5170

yeah totally agree. too bad they didn't add 1 specific button for each of the 2. One for the cruise control (no matter if it's adaptive or classic) and one for the speed limiter. Having to go to the menu is a bit annoying. So i ended up putting by default the SL for the city where it makes more sense. And on the highway i switch it to cruise control. But i guess at least we get a speed limiter unlike Tesla which only has a Speed Limit Mode which forces you to even put a PIN number only to activate it.

I find the Pilot Assist kinda worthless when you have to keep your hands on the steering wheel all the time anyway... so I never use it unfortunately. The active cruise control is very nice though (with the lowest distance settings = one bar). So instead of using Pilot Assist you could just use the ACC together with lane assist (if you want the car to stay in the lane by itself) and the car drive itself without warning when you take your hands of the wheel.

In Holland we drive on the right side of the road and sometimes I feel like it hugs the right side a bit too muchtl, specially when overtaking a wide truck or something. First time I felt like countersteering but there's still enough room. But if I overtake myself I would take a bit more distance then the car does naturally.
