POLE POSITION | Commodore 64 (1984)
Pole Position, for the Commodore 64, is a Formula 1 racing game. Enter the Grand Prix, race against other racing cars to achieve the highest score possible in the shortest amount of time.
Before you can enter the Grand Prix, the player must first qualify by competing in the Qualifying Lap within 73 seconds or less. However, failure to qualify in the Qualifying Lap, you may continue to race until the Race Timer runs after 90 seconds. You will score 50 points per 5 meters and additionally 50 points for every racing car passed. When the time runs out - Game Over.
Qualifying will enable you to start in one of the eight available positions. The faster the lap time was, the better the starting position in addition to bonus score points. The number one starting position is the Pole Position.
During the Grand Prix, you compete against the Race Timer as well as against other racing cars. Failing to beat the Race Timer in any lap, you drop out of the race - Game Over. Completing the race by reaching the finishing line will grant you 200 points per second left on the Race Timer, a bonus score for distance covered, and passing bonus points.

Has it really been 40 years ?! I had some good times playing this until I got 'Revs', which took my racing to an entirely new level.

Revs sort of reminded me a bit of 'Stunt Car Racer' with the HUD display and the steering style... yet on a 'proper' track. Great game isn't it 😇🕹️👌
mate, 80s nostalgia unlocked! I loved that cartoon :)

Brilliant wasn't it - I didn't realise there were only 13 episodes! Still... the intro is a classic 😇🕹️👌
Remember the game and the cartoon (not connected). The show only had 13 episodes, but swear there were loads more. Pole Position was a great Arcade game (spent many cents, playing this on my holiday to Cyprus back in the early 80's. But Pit Stop two has piped it to the post for fun and strategy, especially in two player mode. Great vid, great times.

Some good racing games came out for the Commodore 64, but I have to agree with you... Pitstop II was the best of the bunch for me 😇🕹️👌
This was a staple of my early C64 gaming. It wasnt really until I was adult and played the game in the arcade I can appreciate how close it was.

Superb in the arcade too isn't it, to say that it's a racer from 82'.. like you say though, Datasoft did an awesome job of recreating the fun a couple of years later for our beloved C64, thankfully 😇🕹👌
Loved getting a big box Compilation for Christmas ❤. Got a Thalamus box one Christmas. Provided countless hours of fun. As always a great video. A big thumbs up 👍

That themetune really hits you in the nostalgic feels, right! Love the cartoon... didn't realise it was short-lived though (Only 13 episodes) 😇🕹️👌
I remember playing this one back at the arcades using the built-in steering wheel controller. I did play the C64 version, but I was personally more partial to Pitstop 2 for its competitive multiplayer

This game is still brilliant in the arcades, I was playing it not too long back at the Arcade Club - but, like you say, Pitstop II just pipped it at the post for having the superb split-screen multiplayer 😇🕹️👌
Cant remember if this or Night driver was my first racing game for the c64. But I do remember spending hours and hours on this one. Nice punch in the nostalgia nerve bud! ❤

Night Driver was really good too for it's day, although the front bonnet of the car is huge for the road! So there wasn't much room for maneuver, still - a great game too. It's these early titles that definitely bring back to best nostalgic feels... superb memories of the excitement of being able to play Pole Position finally, as I got it much later on the US Gold compilation. Shame really, as I'd already played the much superior Pitstop II first, but I definitely still enjoyed it 😇🕹️👌
Pole Position was cool but my favourite racing game on the C64 was Grand Prix Circuit, that intro music alone..!

Isn't it just! A really addictive racing game which definitely ate plenty of my 10p's back in the day! This and (for some reason) Chase H.Q were my favourite arcade racers. Then when Daytona came out, it blew everything out of the water 😇🕹️👌

The Atari XL / XE version of Pole Position had the edge over the C64 version.
@CheekyCommodoreGamer
Ай бұрын
Yeah I hear many saying that. Yet I never had an Atari so for me this was the closest thing to the arcades. I'll definitely check out the Atari version though 😇🕹👌
I also had/probably still have Gold Collection II :D Pole Position in the arcade was amazing. Used to go to a shop called A Matter of Taste (a newsagent, but what a name!) that had a couple of arcade machines, and this was one of them. Loved the C64 version as well. I verrrrrryyy vaguely recall that cartoon - will need to look it up. Have you played Scalextric? I spent far too long making tracks that just connect at the start/end. Speed King was another winner for me (I bought it on Mastertronic, but it seems that it did get a full price release). Great video yet again, thank you :)
@CheekyCommodoreGamer

Both Scalextrix & Speed King are in my 'to do' list now for racers - I didn't play Scalextrix as much but I had the Mastertronic 'Speed King' and really enjoyed that game. I was a big fan of 'Hang On'. Super Hang On for the Amiga is superb 😇🕹️👌
I loved this when it came out (well, a year later as a mate gave me a copy ). Don't remember the cartoon but that song definitely sets my spider senses off!

Was a short lived cartoon, but I loved watching it back in the day - even though recently I found out there was only ever 13 episodes made. Great racer though, addictive game back in the day 😇🕹️👌
I really like his game, but am more of a fan of Pitstop 2. The fact that I had Pitstop 2 before I got Pole Position could be a factor. I also liked the split-screen 2-player (which was a new concept at the time) and the ability to stop for repairs and/or fuel when needed. To me, it felt like Pitstop 2 was a step up from Pole Position. However... even though I preferred Pitstop 2, I still enjoyed playing this game. I didn't know that Pole Position 2 even existed on the C64. I may have to check that one out. Edit: Also, I'm glad you brought up the cartoon! I used to watch that also! That theme music... very nostalgic!

I think if Pitstop II had been an arcade game it would have blown the socks off Pole Position, but this game was the most popular and was massive in Japan. Both great in their own right... as for the cartoon! Yeah! I loved watching that as a kid but had no idea it was based on the Namco Pole Position. Shame it only ran for 13 episodes 😇🕹️👌

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer That's true. The first time I played Pole Position was the arcade version at a Showbiz Pizza Place when I was a kid. I believe it was before I even had a C64 (only had the Atari 2600 at the time). I couldn't go there often, so I rarely had the chance to play. Once I got my C64, I got Pitstop 2 shortly afterwards... and that was absolutely my favorite racing game at the time. Lots of fun! 🙂
I hate to admit, but I never got the checkered flag. I always ran out of time. :) I loved it, though....because I had a blast playing it in the arcade with a real steering wheel. :)

It seems pretty dated playing it back, yet in 84' this was such an awesome arcade port and massively popular amongst me & my friends - that is of course, until we discovered Pitstop II 😇🕹️👌
On the Atari XL version your car automatically accelerates, so you can use the fire button to brake. It also controls smoother, seems a lot more challenging and has more cars on screen to weave through... it's just more exciting to play honestly. Still fun on the C64 but rather basic in comparison. In the early days Atari XL was after all a real contender to the C64.

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I didn't either! Bought one years ago because I was curious. I think it's the popular micro that is most similar in hardware to the C64 but it has an early library of unique games, since the 400/800 computers were introduced in 1979. Some early games really are a bit more polished on the Atari but from 1984 onward the C64 quickly takes over both in popularity and ambitious game development. Pitstop II funnily enough is worse on Atari.

The C64 version is rather good I must say but I grew up with the 2600 which while to be fair is quite different and personally speaking I find it to be the better version out of any I've played including the arcade.
