Well known for fishing for zander and huge perch, Holland is also a destination of choice for pike. If boat fishing on large lakes is often synonymous with big fish, shore fishing in small canals can also be a lot of fun. This is a close and exotic destination for Belgian fishermen, but also for those living in the northern half of France. Whether for a day, a weekend or a week, don’t hesitate, try the adventure!
The situation:
The Netherlands has had to deal with rising water levels for many years, so the state has created a vast network of “polders” (17% of the country's surface area).
If the entire country is crisscrossed by these small canals, the area around the towns of Gouda and Rotterdam remains the most coveted by fishermen. However, there are polders all over Holland.
The latter have a high population of pike, introduced at the base to reduce populations of invasive species. If the shallow depth and acidity of the water seem to slow down the growth of the fish, it is common to find pike measuring 80 to 90 cm, the average being between 60 and 70 cm. More than the search for trophy fish, the interest here is to catch fish in numbers. The polders indeed have a biotope very conducive to reproduction.
Regulations :
The Dutch license is taken directly online. You will need to join a fishing company depending on the area where you plan to fish. Thus, the Gouda/Rotterdam area requires the “Groot Rotterdam” permit for example.
With the polders crisscrossing the landscape, the Dutch Fishing Sports Federation has set up a very practical application. All you need to do is enter your license number as well as the fishing town to find out if fishing is authorized and if there are any special rules. It is also possible to use this application by geolocating yourself. Be careful, it is common to be able to fish for 2 km, to be prohibited for 200 m and for authorization to resume for 1 km. In the event of an inspection, you may be asked to prove that you are within your rights. Having the Visplanner app on your phone is therefore recommended.

Despite the narrow width of the polders, I have a weakness for canes that could surprise you with their length.
The strong wind present in this flat country, the late mowing causing a lot of vegetation on the bank, and the obligation of discretion in the face of pike often on the edge are the factors which explain this.
