Benson is. Very good grappler I don’t think he’s been bested on the ground in any fight ever. Last week was the only time he’s been submitted but was rocked from a head kick and at the last phase of his career.

Damian is one of the greatest Jiu-Jitsu players ever… and Benson survived 20 minutes, that says a lot about his Jiu-Jitsu defense.

@@coolbreeze3793 I remember quite the opposite. I remember his crazy run submitting everyone without throwing many strikes. His fight against a prime Sonnen was a perfect example of this. That foot sweep to mounted triangle was epic. He even spoke about doing that in a post fight interview and representing jiu-jitsu. His legacy is cemented as an all time great jiu-jitsu practitioner.

Two legends still in absolutely incredible shape. 👊🏻

Arguably the best BJJ guy in MMA vs a guy with some of the best submission defense in MMA.

Maia's technical skills is simply elite, his transitions, sweeps and his ability to play chess thinking 3,4,5 moves ahead is a sight to watch to those well acquainted in the art of BJJ.

You're not inside his head. You can't tell if he's thinking a certain number of moves or just the next one. You're being too specific when you don't even train.

The sequence where Maia lifted Benson off the ground was strange. Why didn't he pummel him in the face. I thought this was MMA. What a phony and boring fight. This is why well rounded fighters will always win against guys who think BJJ is the only style they need to learn.

He couldn't finish because Benson is freakishly strong and he had to wear him down, it's not because he's some type of BJJ genius

Maia is BJJ masterclass. Almost impossible to get that man off your back, and just as impossible to survive it. "Smooth" Henderson is just tough as nails and freaky strong for his size, but this match showed that his BJJ is top notch also. To have Damian on your back for the better part of 20 minutes and survive says it all.

Gotta say this was actually a huge upset. Maia should have been able to put him to sleep. He's far more experienced in bjj. If I was Henderson I'd take this as a win.

​@@mr.g816 if you are as good as Damian Maia in BJJ you don't need to jump around to impress your opponent and spend a lot of energy during the fight. Damian is an experienced BJJ black belt and one of the best BJJ fighters of all time so he wouldn't knock himself out bringing his opponent to his guard. Cheers.

Maia is a guy who let's you have the feeling of control, while he actually is controlling his most opponents moves. It's amazing how can someone look so slow and fast at the same time :D

Maias back game is great but definitely one dimensional. There’s so many good back attacks he doesn’t threaten with. It’s a bit easier to only defend the rnc when that’s the only thing you’re threatening with. Good job to both guys though. Great control and great defense.

@@RyanJamesOfficial there’s so many back attacks and he only ever looks for the most basic choke. His control is great but he could definitely expand his game on the back. It is one dimensional absolutely, doesn’t mean he’s not good at it.

Henderson is a slippery guy. Such good defense.

Gordon had that the same body triangle on galvao wich pretty much was key to Gordon's victory, a study of how henderson escaped that body triangle from mia is a must.

I can't believe benson Henderson survived through that and he did so, very well prime henderson, as boring as he was, would be an absolute monster if he were in the game right now

BJJ as a separate sport has one big disadvantage. It is very easy to defend an attacking opponent and neutralize it into a draw, much like chess. On the other hand, in MMA, it is very difficult to just defend and win without getting attacked.

no it isnt if you are world class level it can be easier to stall and defend but as a whole BJJ guys like maia can sub 99% of the population with anything they want. You must no train BJJ or train with low level people. Henderson was lucky maia was on his back where the attacks are easier to predict and defend.
