Poland under new management | DW Documentary

Poland may have succeeded in voting out a right-wing populist government, but have the country’s divisions improved?
From the exclusion of LGBT+ people to bans on abortion and the firing of journalists critical of the government - eight years of rule by the Law and Justice party saw Poland drifting ever further from democracy. How do Polish people feel about the recent political change? What do they expect from their new, pro-European government? DW speaks to Poles of different ages in both urban and rural areas, including supporters and opponents of the former ruling party, gathering a range of perspectives on the hopes and fears of the Polish people. A report by Axel Rowohlt.

@@mycosys why do you label them all as neolibs, but in essence you're right, they are neo liberals unfortunately. I'm talking strictly about the economy here. Will they do anything for the young people? Probably not, but neither would PiS. PiS is really a party for the old people, a nationalist party that used their power to erode critisizm further and further. They really didn't want to stop ruling ever again. And it was scary, because Poland was becoming like Hungary or Russia. Poor illiberal countries where the ruling party and it's friends can do whatever they want. At least now the government is different. It's crucial to have change of power.

Unfortunately, this is a difficult topic because now all TV stations in Poland are now under the power of the ruling party, which often spreads propaganda and does not talk about what it does, for example they have remained silent about the attempt to involve Poland in the war in Ukraine, blocking many Polish national investments, admission of about 500,000 immigrants to our country (most of people here are against it) and they are blaming polish farmers for protests and are calling them "pro-russian provocateurs" and did not speak any single word about the provocations of the police during the strikes in Warsaw about 2 weeks ago during huge protests, the abuse of power by them and the brutal pacification of the strikers, during which national symbols (mainly flags) were desecrated by police officers. Even one of the members of the "Konfederacja", which is a party in opposition to the ruling party, was gassed. Party that is ruling now in Poland is pro-german, that's why DW Documentary (german station) is talking good about it, while it's not as bright as they describe it. Otherwise PiS who predict everything. "Discrimination" - no there was ANY discrimination - it is simply fals, please give me just one legal example. 🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: The recent elections in Poland saw the right-wing populists from the Law and Justice party voted out, reflecting a democratic shift in the country. The new leader, Donald Tusk, is liberal and pro-Europe, facing resistance from right-wing nationalists. The Law and Justice party, in power for 8 years, faced criticism for discriminatory policies against LGBTQ+ individuals and restrictive abortion laws. Despite polarization, there are signs of change, with increased acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights and discussions around civil unions and abortion rights. Media landscape changes reflect political shifts, with former state broadcasters undergoing upheaval and privatized channels gaining prominence. Social cohesion remains a challenge, but there's optimism for positive change and the desire to build a unified society in Poland. Made with HARPA AI

This is all good, but if it sways too far left they will experience the same problems the US and Canada are all dealing with now. This is how it all started for us a decade ago. Now we have too much drug addiction to the point that some major cities are having a hard time to function. The cities are easy on criminals so theft and violence have been increasing. Truth are no longer being taught in schools, peoples feelings and opinions are being taught as facts. As someone who's voted liberal and progressive for decades, I regret how far things have swung left in the US. I hope it doesn't get bad in Poland. Do your best to maintain balance and be as close to the middle as best as possible. Any far swing to the left or the right long term negative effects to society. It will be hard to fix these.

This is not a new government, but a party that has already ruled Poland for 8 years. Unfortunately, Poles have already forgotten that Mr. Tusk raised many fees and taxes and that his party was involved in numerous scandals. Unfortunately, after 1989, when Poland was not under Russian tutelage, we did not have a Polish government, only a Polish-speaking one. We knelt before the Americans and now we will do it before the Germans

Blah blah blah, every reason to moaning is good for some peoples, even if imagined. Kneel before Americans? You're talking about a nation that basically blackmailed the US into joining NATO 😊

@@imcbocian If you watched Polish politics, you would know that American ambassador had more authority than Polish president and could influence the govt with one phone call. Still Americans only wanted us to follow their global politics, world order and not harm their strategic interests. Germans seek total economic and political controll over Poland. To keep it as a poor buffer state, subcontractor and source of cheap labour. So I prefer kneeling to Americans.
