If you get a message from an account that looks like us telling you you've won a prize, please ignore it and report the comment for spam. I'm trying to keep up with them, but it's time-consuming, and I may miss some. If we ever do any kind of contest, it will be clearly outlined in a video.

@20:26 theres some controversy with the 15+ top 8 Marcus Abreu vs William Lieu first round match up, Marcus Faced and beat William by deck out during the qualying rounds and other notable players like Scott gearherd pointed out that during the play in first round he played a lass, and he didnt play that during his match against marcus. Top 8 had deck list BUT the qualifying rounds did not.

Bro the whole tournament thing in a giant boat with a golden invitation sounds like something straight up from Yugioh, it's so cool.

Idk if you realize just how high quality these are. These are higher quality than most video essays from youtubers with millions of subscribers. Your videos remind me of summoning salts when he first started our before he got big and it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if you reach that level. Idk anything about the TCG outside of your videos but they are so good that they got me interested

Marcus here - it was a fun tournament and being one of only a handful of Canadians it was super awesome to go on that run. In the swiss I actually won my matches with William.

This is something about the Pokemon TCG I never knew about and it probably my favorite thing in general when card games/video games do this. A competition series to earn an invite for a tournament on a Cruise Ship is such a cool idea. That would get me hyped as an adult, I can only imagine how cool it was for the kids back then.
The dawn of the competitive scene. Thanks for the series, it's really fascinating learning everything I missed back in the day. Looking forward to the next episode ✌🏼

Thanks so much for the support and kind words!
I remember this era fondly. I was a little over 7 when this set hit, playing at my LGS with decks me and my dad made, until he got fed up with me ruining the decks with me slotting in whatever dark pokemon looked cool. Taking 2nd at a local tournament and winning a couple gym heroes starter decks is probably still my competitive peak lol. I don't play many games competitively anymore, and when I do, it's mostly in fighting games nowadays. Thanks for making these, really takes me back to some good days.

9:13 I just want to highlight one line from the rules flyer. "We suggest that you use your own Pokemon trading card game deck of 60 cards. If you don't have a deck with you, we'll *loan* you one." THAT is a sentence you'd never see at most modern TCG tournaments. I've been to some local game stores that have rental decks for weekly tournaments, but a professional sanctioned event? That is WILD- and an interesting way to get new players into the game.

They were different times. It is an awesome concept though.
Really glad you’re putting out more episodes to this series. I feel like I’ve heard the history of Base-Fossil era dozens of times while the later WoTC and early TPC years don’t get covered much

Thank you so much for this beautiful video! I won one of the paid trips from the San Jose event for 10- age group. As a child growing up in a family with modest means, winning that trip sold to my family the world that opened up to me by supporting this hobby of mine. I owe my lifelong passion for Pokemon and all the places and people it has connected me to around the globe to this event. It was fun having a chance to relive this.

It is strange that Creatures didn't allow Wizards to use bans or a restricted list, considering Japanese tournaments had already been using both approaches with a banlist for juniors and a restricted list for seniors (one restricted card per deck), alongside a 15 pokémon minimum for junior decks and a 20 trainer maximum for seniors. Eventually Japan would move to the more extensive point based "Hall of Fame" restricted list in 2001 tournaments.

This is wild, I went to the Dallas one myself when I was six or seven years old. I had never played the game competitively, and got wrecked by haymaker decks. It was really cool, and I remember pulling my first Blastoise from a Base Set 2 pack afterwards. I played a lot more after this day.
The fact that the Rocket era didn't kill the game completely is nothing but a miracle

Nostalgia bait to hook in the audience (but also to relive three nostalgia myself).
Goop gas being printed in this set was great. How I turned 1 a kid in the super trainer showdown in Salt Lake City!
I remember rocket set fondly. Bold to make a new set of worse/riskier cards. Also, the card art is so aggressive and stylistic compared to the paired down originals. I remember Dark Gloom/vileplume being a menace in tcg 2 on Gameboy color.
