Pokemon Regional Retrospective: Kanto ~ Red/Yellow/Leafgreen/Let's Go

Ойындар

Pokemon is a series of games, books, movies, tv shows, anime,...... you get the picture it's a lot! And I've been a fan of this multimedia titan since I can remember and now it's time for me to remake a series I made in like 8th grade where I went through every pokemon game Kanto to Galar, Red to Shield but this time with more titles mixed in aswell as the newest titles in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet!
In Today's part we begin the series with whats probably the largest hurdle for me to overcome: Kanto! From Pokemon Red and Green.....and Blue to Pokemon Yellow, to Pokemon Firered and Leafgreen, to Lets Go Pikachu & Eevee, we'll be dicussing each one of the incarnations in great detail aswell as having fun dissecting thier individual strengths to see which one comes out on top as the definitive kanto experince! Will it be the Game Boy orginals? Thier remixed version? The Remake? THE REIMAGINING OF THE REMIX?! WHO KNOWS!?
I do actually and so will you if you stick to the end!

Your long form videos are as good and even better than some of the leading longform video game video essayists. You're not just summarizing the game, you're digging into the development history, game mechanics and features, fan theories, as well as your own lived experience and history as a fan of these games. Bravo

This was such a fun retrospective, I really enjoyed it & had a big smile on my face throughout. It's also pretty rare for me to find a video of this length & agree with the bulk of the rants. [About the only thing I didn't agree with would be the opinion on Yellow. I see it as equal to RGB.] LOVED your thoughts on Trace, listen I am the Gen 7 Defender and I was cheering at my TV at that shit. I also appreciate sharing your teams, whenever I watch retrospectives I ALWAYS wish for a section where they'd do EXACTLY what you did!

Original Blue is definitely not a complete ass, the stuff he says comes off more "big brother teasing". Though I do really like Pokéspe Blue, and I think his shittyness is similarly childish. Also, I like that Blaine's gym trainers are all burglars. I don't remember if it's canon or fan theory but I like the idea that he was picking them up from the mansion in Cinnabar and giving them a stable job. Also, Bill is kinda insane. Forget the whole swapping bodies thing, Bill took the PC system made for storing items and not only made functionality for storing Pokémon but also provided *multiple* sections of it for free for every trainer. You literally don't even know you're using his system until you meet him.

You don't know how kids figured out Oaks Parcel? Maybe if someone couldn't read that could be a problem but otherwise, it was completely obvious. There is an NPC that literally tells you to visit a mart, you don't have many other things to do, since the Pewter route is blocked, and the guard won't let you past towards Victory Road. So after speaking to everyone and checking out every route, you'll eventually enter the Pokemart, where the guy tells you to bring that parcel to Oak. Since there is nothing else to do, might as well run that errand, and be rewarded with progress. Now the thing i'm 98% sure almost nobody found out. If you decide to go back to Viridian, beat the Rival, and go back to Oak without ever buying any Pokeballs, he'll gift you 5. It's pretty logical you wouldn't find that, since the first time you enter the mart, the guy won't sell you anything, so you'll be inclined to go back and try to buy something after you ran the errand, and buy your Pokeballs. The reason modern EXP share is unliked is that it boosts the amount of EXP earned significantly, since every mon participating gets full XP, and every other gets half. Gen 1 EXP all split half the XP between participating mons, and the other half between everyone else, meaning you would still only get 100% EXP, instead of 350% minimum. Thats a huge difference. Actually in Gen 1 thanks to rounding you probly even lose XP by using EXP all.

I agree and I disagree. Basically, I agree, besides your take on yellow, and I didn't like Trace because I thought he was annoying, but I get why you like him now. With yellow though, I think whether you'll prefer it or the originals depends on how much you like the original series' icons. They're basically the same experience as far as I know (but I grew up on Yellow, so that may be my bias showing). Anyway, if you like the iconic stuff from the show like having all the starters, Pikachu following behind you, or Jessie and James showing up now and then, you'll probably prefer yellow to red/blue. If you don't like the Pikachu though, it's not like you can't send him to computer jail and play it similar to red or blue, just with all of the starters over just the one. I like the sprites better too. I would play FR/LG over yellow, but yellow over R/B. I like the Let's go games, but the control really kneecaps the game unless you play handheld. Nice video though, I liked it. And yeah, the Teachy TV is a perfect compromise on tutorials.

@Chubby_Bubby I think it feels like a pretty accurate remake of yellow. There's even a few neat easter eggs here and there. I believe it was in the Pokémon fan's house where you get the voucher, he's got memorabilia for Pikachu, Eevee, and Clefairy, which is a cute reference to Pokémon pink. I like the new catching mechanics in concept, but the control needs a lot of work. If you could map buttons to play it like you're in handheld mode I might pick it over FR/LG, honestly. Though the lack of a post game and Johto Pokémon still makes that a tough decision. Paywalling Mew instead of making it a mini event was a bit of a mistake. Wasn't that around the time the first movie remake came out? I forget. If it was though, missed opportunity for it to be tied to movie ticket sales or a mystery gift or something. The follow Pokémon mechanic was perfect, and I would almost excuse the dex cut if every game had this kind of feature...almost. Here, it feels like it works though. I kinda wish you could get SOME Johto 'mons after the champion. I just really love Furret, he's just so cute. Anyway, the loss of the Sevii islands was a bummer, but understandable. I remember liking some of the challenges where you raised a specific Pokémon to fight a champion of that species one on one, and I was gonna do most of them but it got stale with nothing else to do besides the character rematches every day. I liked the teams of the old cast, but wish Red would occasionally use his G/S/C team to parallel the player if they took all the Pokémon like the original game Red did (and I did in my run for nostalgia). I think they're using their Manga teams though? Which is cool if they are. I think this art style is perfect, and they really should have stuck with it. I liked being able to pet your Pikachu or Eevee, but I never bothered to dress Pikachu up. I think toward the end I gave him that slight spike hairstyle to differentiate him from other Pikachu, but that was it. It was more trouble than it was worth though 🤣 It's a fun game, but has some glaring flaws. I started shiny hunting in D/P/Pt, but I prefer how it works with the catch chain in this one. I got a black Charizard and named him Charcoal ^^ Sorry about the wall of text, I had a fair bit to say. I revisit it every once in a blue moon, but not nearly as much as the GBA or DS games.

For example one time I gave a scyther twin-needle for me to use in my play through and it was super fun. I try not to make myself overpowered but rather do some basic game balancing like giving scyther a bug move or, if I’m playing Red or Blue, give Charizard fly

I can absolutely not agree on the yellow hate. Yellow is by far the best version of Gen 1. The redrawn sprites, that actually look like they are supposed to alone are worth the choice. It also has some minor tweaks to some Pokemons movesets, like Charizard being able to learn Fly. Movesets in Gen1 are absolute dogwater, so even the slightest improvement is worth pointing out. The levelcurve "issue" was a way Gamefreak tried to fix how brokenly OP the stat XP system was in favor of the player. Since enemies all have 0 stat XP, your own team is basically allways 10 level higher than what it looks like, once you reach the midgame. If this was 99, and the question is, is Yellow worth getting, when you allready had Red/Blue, then the answer is probably no, since there aren't that many differences that make that purchase worth it, but today, if the plan is to either revisit Gen 1, or play it for the first time, then there is no reason to not choose Yellow. Unless you purposely wanna see the bad sprites i guess. But then again, there is also no reason to not just play Yellow Legacy, which has fixed all the issues Gen 1 has.

100% agree. I was so perplexed by the yellow hate. Like ok Koga has some venonats but the game gifts you a charmander lol. Sabrina is the only real challenge but even then you can delay that fight until after Blaine if you’re really struggling. Although it’s a bit more challenging than Red and Blue, Yellow is not exactly a hard game and is still way easier than e.g. Pokémon Black and White imo.

  • @tehSunBro

    8 күн бұрын

@@woollychannel6759 Koga's "team" is the closest they could get ingame to mimicking the anime style of one Pokemon constantly getting stronger and evolving mid battle. Sabrina does the same thing. Also Sabrina suffers from the Gen 1 trainer AI, where she is completely useless if you just fight her with a Psychic type of your own, because the AI just starts spamming recover. She's completely helpless against a Hypno or Exeggutor.
