The interesting thing about the first generation sprites is that they were actually made before anybody did official art for the creatures. Meaning the Sugimori designs we know and love were adapted from the original and dare I say creepy designs from Red, Blue, Green and Yellow.

this is actually pretty much the case. They add to squeeze the art into a small sprite canvas so they removed long arms, neck, legs and make their face and eyes bigger to be able to make them visible on the tiny resolution.

Some of these Pokémon designs could be reused to add more differences between the Male and Female Pokémon. The Rapidash with the spiral horn could be the Female one. Also Dodrio is more intimidating with the black eyes.

If you see all of his sprites from generation 1-5, you will notice he is gradually starting to get up until he finally stands in gen 6. Took him a couple of years, but he did it.

@@bmrbricksblocks1862 yeah I just typed that comment because one time my sister and I were watching mlp and we were watching the song This Day Aria and after the song was finished, she said, “I really like cadence’s singing although cadence was pretty good but I think I like cadence’s singing voice the best”.

What I've noticed is, most of the gen 1 sprites either have derpy or stressed looking faces (Especially Caterpie/Metapod. That 'mon looks like it's seen hell.) but the color palate is sometimes better than the actual sprites; like Sandslash's darker head, the aetherial look of Gastly, or Ponyta's brown patches.

That would be funny but it's never gonna happen especially because Game Freak went full 3D. I doubt they would render crappy sprites into 3D.

I think the best looking pokemon game's still bw2, wasn't static pictures, it had fully animated sprites in battle, I just like pixel art and 2d anime images better generally. And that isn't to say 3D is bad overall, but that the way pokemon has handled it is not worthwhile.

He saw that he was changed to evolve into Butterfree instead of Venomoth.

I love how some of these, like the Squirtle line, meant the graphics designers knew what they were going for and Ken simply drew them verbatim for the official Gen 1 artwork but then others probably made Ken think "Is this supposed to be a joke?" and he then redesigned the Pokémon himself. If anyone is confused on what I'm talking about basically almost all 151 Pokémon were designed inside of the game first and then later on in development Ken was asked to create official artwork for the Pokémon for use in promotional material such as posters, manga, and the Pokémon anime. Why Gamefreak didn't ask Ken to design the Pokémon first and then base the sprites in the game on that instead of the other way around? We may never know.

Slowbro's tail is meant to wrap around at the left of Shellder's mouth. You can see the tail wrap around the back of Shellder in the sprite, but not the artwork.

I actually really like the softness and more rounded style on quite a few of these pokemon. I'm not going to outright say they're better but I'll always feel something about the original style was lost along the way - granted, that's how we got pokemon to where it is today
