@@karisu4598 Ursula? The girl didn't want to just stomp on you, she wanted to make sure that you were bullied in the process. Was she annoying, yes she was. But just like Harley, did extra work to make sure to defeat their opponents not only in a battle, but make them suffer while in it. Ursula went out of her way to get her two pokemons which were one of Dawn's nightmare (plusle and minun), and when she discovered that the girl had a trauma, she used everything to her advantage. Her battle with Dawn in the Grand Festival was nerve wrecking and great.

@@Ruffgi Fair points, I guess. My criticism of her however stems from the fact that she gets very little characterization other than being mean, unlike Paul who got a ton of it by comparison. To me, Ursula's inclusion always seemed like the writers wanted to tick a box titled 'Give Dawn a nasty rival' when the latter already had an excess amount of rivals to deal with. So yeah, while I do appreciate how effective Ursula is as a rival, her relative lack of development and screentime is disappointing by contrast.

They did make May look strong at the end in a way. You forgot to mention how after May lost to Drew, the crowd was chanting her name. But the Kanto Grand Festival is done MUCH BETTER

@@nintendolife25 really? Oh no. (I'm doing a rewatch of the series and Advanced is one of the least that I remember).

I really hated how May actually fell for Harley's stupid advice to use just Silver Wind, like let's say that he was being sincere, it's still awful advice and her being naive enough to fall for it it pissed me off, I was hoping she was just playing him the whole time but no. Getting letters from everyone was fantastic since it helps her remember how far she's come, but same for the audience. I definitely wish there was a little more with Harley, and certainly more build up for Drew. I'm a little willing to forgive Drew beating her as much as he did since he's just more experienced and May still has a lot to learn, seeing her growth from Episode 1 makes me happy as is.

I'm glad you're reviewing the Grand Festivals. They may not be as hyped up as Leagues, but they were a really unique way to give Ash's companions the spotlight. The contests have some of my favorite moments of the series!

I think Hoenn hyped up the grand festival a lot more than the league since they gave May all the rivals and Ash didn't get his until the last minute

Once again Sinnoh wins in Grand festival category. Dawn is amazing , so is Nando, Kenny and most importantly Zoey. And best part is Jessie too was a semifinalist.. Edited - Ursula too

One of the best parts of the Diamond and Pearl series are the rival: Both Ash and Dawn had memorable rivals. Even Úrsula was fun (in an anoying way).

@@LivelyLinnea there is Zoey the first female rival in the main series who wasnt necessarily better than our female lead but they always have a great competition. There is Kenny who isn't necessarily good but is still better than Harley , there is Ursula who is Harley like but is so much more evil , there is Nando who is an elegant contestant and finally there is Jessie who was absolutely great in Sinnoh. But whatever , I respect your opinion

@@sarangadas4020 yeah but Kanto was way harder than Sinnoh. Jessie didn't have 0 ribbons in the advanced or battle frontier, whereas in sinnoh she almost made it to the finals

I like how May's rivals are so competitive .

This Grand Festival did everything it needed to do; it introduced the concept and added more weight to Harley’s character. It’s probably right that May lost to Drew, as I’m sure they knew they would be doing another one- and that’s really it, the Hoenn Grand Festival puts in a lot of work to make the Kanto one so good. But the Team Rocket stuff in the first episode is inexcusable.

I guess if there's one thing they did really well with the Alola League (besides Ash winning obv), its how they had Team Rocket not interfere with the League arc until the very end.

I think they learned they're lesson with Team Rocket messing with the Leagues. We all know that Ash might have done better that day if half of his team didn't get wiped out, thanks to Team Rocket's crap.

May is my favorite character after Ash and AG Pokemon contests are the best things the anime had to offer aside from Ash's own challenges.

May is one of the best companions

Harley is like that annoying neighbor who always visits your parents, acts kindly in front of them, but isn’t afraid to show you that he/she has a love-hate relationship with you. Of course your parents don’t care about it no matter how many times you tell them so.

Huh, didn't expect this kind of video but I'm down for it. The contests are WAY better than the showcases

This was the most rushed out of the 3 grand festivals, the Kanto and Sinnoh ones definitely had a better arc and better battles.

Harley is one of those really awkward characters that can get really obnoxious. I do agree that they should have added some extra episodes. The Hoenn Grand Festival felt very rushed and was over too fast. About Harley btw, during the Purika contest, the way he recorded Max and then exposed May's secret to the crowd was hilarious. xD

GamingFanactic911 It’s frustrating that despite his poor sportsmanship he’s never penalised or disqualified. Hijacking the PA system to blatantly throw May off should have seen him kicked out. In the next Grand Festival he’ll cosplay as her and the most reaction he gets is weird looks and May being caught off guard. Harley being described as petty is an understatement, he’s willing to loan Team Rocket his Pokemon to prevent May getting her fifth Kanto ribbon and gives a backstory of dubious validity to explain why he has it in for her.

Pikachu Whether that flashback is true or not is debatable. He’s never mentioned it before, and when he first met May he didn’t have it in for her until he completely misinterpreted what she was saying. The context of the flashback was him justifying helping Team Rocket to prevent May winning the contest, so he’s plenty of reason to lie.

Yeah, the hoenn grand festival was alright. But the Kanto/battle frontier grand festival is one my favourite collection of episodes there is! And it really shows off the end of Mays journey much better with a great battle for Harley and Drew. And Jessie gets a time to shine without being annoying.

It was really funny to see Jessie getting swallowed by Swalot

Dang I just realized that you can also do every contest episode (even the ones where May/Dawn doesn’t win) Also you could do a more in depth review of the gym battle/island challenge episodes for Ash since the only time you reviewed the gym battles you were limited to 10 words. Finally you could do Serena’s stuff like all her performances (even ones she loses) And whatever the final tournament was called I forget. You sure have a lot more content set out for you Zach and I’m sure everyone would love to see all of them.

Harley was....okay he was a total bitch but he was my favorite of May's rivals and had campy personality despite his vendetta with May. I loved Drew as well but he felt like Gary to me, not alot of comedy but more serious than Harley.

I would love for them to do another contest/festival arc, but the region treats them more like pro-wrestling matches. It would help make the female companion less of a copy/paste.

unpopular opinion, i like may's contests more then serena's masterclass and dawn's contests. I just find the showcases un intresting and i find dawn's contests to be a lot less brutal than may's

MajesticBoy YT Dawn goes on more of a character journey though, learning what works and what doesn’t (for example that flashy moves can lose points by unintentionally hiding the performing Pokemon) and coming up with strategies. May is like early Ash in that she wins a lot because of luck and spontaneous strategy, unlike how Dawn will spend episodes coming up with and honing move combinations like the one with Cyndaquil and Mamoswine.

MajesticBoy YT Dawn also had stronger rivals who had different dynamics with her. Zoe was the friend, Kenny was the childhood friend and Ursula was a better written Harley. Each of them challenged Dawn in different ways and made her a better person and coordinator. May had Drew, but their relationship and rivalry didn’t get as much coverage as you’d expect for a main rival, and Harley, who was petty AF and really should have been disqualified for his antics.

MajesticBoy YT A really good thing to come out them is the Kenny’s Deedee nickname. When Ursula weaponises the origin of it Dawn is able to work past the embarrassing memory. It flashes out more of Dawn and Kenny’s shared history and provides personal growth for Dawn. Sinnoh was the high point for rivalries really, both Ash and Dawn thrived because of their rivals, something largely absent from the rivalries of previous and later eras of the show. Dawn’s initial bumpiness could be a deconstruction, that despite having a Top Coordinator for a mother she has skills she needs to learn and that succeeding is down to how she uses these skills. Even Jessie learns to use more technique, even if that technique means she’s more involved in the performance than a coordinator typically is.

I wonder if Zac will review the companion's...HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. I think it would be cool since I don't think he's done it yet.

Really miss the Grand Festival arc :( its been a long while

I liked the Contests in the anime but I feel like the didn't really come into their own until Sinnoh and they became one of the things that made that series my personal favourite. For these Contest videos though I feel like you should talk about the Contest episodes before the Grand Festival, for the Leagues they always felt like their own finale arc to end off a series but the Grand Festivals felt more like a cap to a ongoing, on-and-off arc than their own big thing.

I remember looking on Pokeflix at the Sinnoh League Victors and seeing the Sinnoh Grand Festival and one of the episodes had a thumbnail of a Mamoswine seemingly looking at a giant realistic owl Also Damm Ash is a dick to May during all of her contests and this. He literally just spends his time evolving Pokémon or learning new moves

Maybe videos dedicated to reviewing all of the episodes with gym battles? Don Tournaments? Whirl Cup? Contests? Etc. This series is probably the best on this channel.

This is what happens when you get bored in quarantine but it's great that you gave some shine to the grand festival and ultimately other characters and i really like that

Honestly, if you want to fill a greater Arc in a video than just 3 episodes of May's nonsense with Harley, you could always tackle the actual entire journeys to get there too. As in, review each individual Contest. Same for Ash with Gym Battles.

I did love seeing the grand festival arcs in the anime but I do agree that the first one was rushed but also that Harley was a terrible character like seriously dude just because someone said something you made was ok doesn't means you want revenge and try to ruin someone's career show's how pathetic you really are and if I'm going to honest Jesse was even worse claiming during hoenn, battle Frontier, sinnoh, and kalos that she's the best and more elegant coordinator/performer makes me facepalm and groan so loud because after seeing how much she's failed during hoenn and kanto should have shown her to stop lying to herself, james and meowth but i do admit in sinnoh she did made it far but kalos just made me wish team rocket was just for the kanto and johto series or how they were in the beginning of black and white because they really do waste time in the anime and should have been an actual treat instead of jokers who are after one pokemon who wouldn't really help their career to begin with.
