volcarona is such an insane design. scolipede is a close second and then galvantula. gen 5 had insane bug types

leavanny is really good too, it might not be the most broken and it does have some bad weaknesses but its level up moves are crazy.

Holy cow, I was looking for a connection between all these, and I was so confused x'D Big brain for noticing! :P

That Challenge Mode experiment was really interesting! It means that it’s inherently easier since the level caps are higher, which means Elesa (and Clay) could have been harder without Excadrill. Nevertheless, it was cool to see Escavalier put in work in a hardcore nuzlocke! Volcarona best Gen V Bug though; fantastic design and phenomenal stats.

Yeah, in most standard RPGs higher level enemies mean harder challenges, but in Pokemon the biggest problem you face early on are the lack of both STAB and coverage moves, so you end up being stuck using moves like Tackle or Scratch. A higher level cap means they increase the likelihood that the mons you encounter until that point have already learned good enough moves to OHKO or 2HKO the opposition with no issue.

I actually tried this exact monolocke about a month ago, and can confirm that Elesa and Clay are substantially harder in normal mode than in challenge mode.

Clay CAN be trivialized with a bit of baiting and Air Balloon strats though(plus if you wait to evolve Drilbur until Clay's cap of lv.33 it learns Earthquake early) but Elesa is a hardwall on her own. You either gotta hope Lucario is tanky enough to withstand attacks from Emolga or invest heavily in its Spd EVs so it outspeeds her team.

I heard that they actually forgot to scale the stats for Challenge and Assist Mode, so Assist Mode is just unconditionally harder than the base game, while Challenge Mode can be easier or harder for bosses on a case-by-case basis, and is just easier for trainer fights.

An idea for fixing the challenge mode issue: use the standard mode level cap. That way you can fight the buffed move sets, items and more interesting teams while still having comparable stats

@@ItsFireTiger didn't you watch all the way through the video? In challenge mode, the opponent's Pokémon's levels increase. But their stats don't. Essentially, when you're doing a hardcore Nuzlocke and challenge mode, you have an advantage because your Pokemon are actually at a higher level.

I fully agree Expessaly since its the only fighting type you can get before then for the normal gym, unless you want to overlevel you tepig. They know how great it is, and its amazing

lucario is honestly insanely busted for this game. 90 based speed is enough to outspeed most things with just a little investment, early game steel typing with fighting type stab for normal and dark types, and it has a fantastic learnset. you get free ice punch, swords dance by level up, and close combat in the late game. even some of its weaker moves are situationally useful.

The difference between normal mode and challenge mode is really interesting, and you explained it really well. Dr. Flygon putting that PhD to good use!

I've never played challenge mode in B2W2. I had NO clue Iris's Pokémon were that nerfed. Dang. Still, a great run, and we learned something! Also, the rectangle segue was 10/10.

To answer the daily question, while Gen 5 made some fantastic bug types across the board, it's pretty obvious that Joltik is the best one. The little guy is just too cute ^~^

The only reason I figured out the naming theme is because the rival is called 'the law' These nicknames never disappoint!

While I'm big fans of Galvantula and Volcarona for the cool designs and how great they are, I'm partial towards Leavanny. The design is cool and the entire line is just so darn adorable. Shame that Bug/Grass is such a hamper. I would've loved to have it in SwSh tbh.

I love the scientific hypothesis testing towards the end of the challenge, as a fellow scientist (in the making) and Pokémon fan I enjoyed it quite a bit, thanks for all the amazing content as always Flygon PhG

It took me 6 minutes to realize the naming theme and I dont know if I should be amazed or not. I mean, those are all thieves so far. And what do thieves do? They steel. THEY *STEEL* CARL!! Edit: My favourite Gen 5 bug type has to be Crustle, Volcarona coming in 2nd, followed by either Durant or Galvantula.

qotd: definitely accelgor, Me First was their signature move back in the day and I loved using in pvp with the 1.5x dmg boost before it was dexited, even then it's still very fun to use in competitive with throat spray bug buzz, spikes/toxic spikes or for some niche support in doubles with fast encore, stroogle booge, acid spray and even fun water shuriken for funny palossand gimmicks. It's also just extremely bad ass looking bug in general.

My favorite of the gen 5 bugs is also the scolipede line, but specifically Venipede because they're precious and perfect, but I also really like Leavanny

At least peach the lovedisk is doing well, they look dope with that eyepatch

Man, I am happy. First I find another steel type trainer on Showdown and they were totally awesome and we became friends; and now FlygonHG releases a steel type monolocke. Today is great!

Galvantula is not only my favorite Unova bug, but my favorite bug Pokemon in general. I really love its color scheme, and Compoundeyes Thunder is always fun to use

For the QotD: I absolutely love the bugs of Gen 5, but I will always have a soft spot for Scolipede myself, I was doing a mono-poison run in Gen 6 and found a shiny randomly. The ‘mon ended up being my highest level. Not to mention that Scolipede has a surprising amount of coverage.

Never would have guessed challenge mode actually being easier than a regular mode, but that’s a hilarious fact. Great work finding that out!

My favorite Bug type in gen 5 is undoubtedly Galvantula! It's pre-evo is absolutely adorable and an electric tarantula is so badass and adorable that I cant help but love that little guy, Scolipede 100% scores 2nd place from it's pure badassery alone. I'm Glad gen 5 started what I call the bug type revolution where now we're finally getting pretty damn good bugs aside from Scyther and Heracross and I'm all here for it!

Gen 5 was actually the generation everyone at game freak decided to start pumping iron because holy heck did fighting become insane

For me Galvantula is the best bug in Gen5. There's a bunch but something about that goofy fuzzy insanely fast little spider brings me joy

Love the theme of theives as they STEEL things

Would've been neat if you allowed genning in a dream radar pokemon, I often allow one in my b2w2 nuzlockes for the sake of early game variety. You could get bronzor or beldum, though with their hidden ability. I like Escavalier Edit: god, I knew the level cap difference could make the difference between easy and normal modes, but thst revelation completely changes everything for challenge mode as well. I did a nuzlocke on "easy" mode earlier this year to explore how the level cap difference changes things, but wow, that means I was at more of a disadvantage than I thought.

For some reason the nickname theme of “thieves” on this one is my favorite so far, especially when there’s references like “Prisoner 24601” and Danny Ocean on the team.

Scolipede is easily my favorite gen 5 bug type, one of the best designs in the generation imo. It's made me wanna try a bug type mono run in the games!

My favorite gen 5 bug type is Crustle. When I ran Black with only bug types, this absolute Chad solo'd Drayden with its Shell Smash into Earthquake combo. Galvantula is a close second.

My personal favorite Gen 5 bug type is Galvantula. I'm a big fan of spiders, personally, so it's great. I do a lot of macro photography of them, and I honestly find spiders rather cute. I kinda want a pet jumping spider at some point. Great job with yet another video! I've always been a fan of them, and I like your style the most among the KZread Nuzlocke community.

@@cptKamina yeah, I'm definitely far in the minority by liking spiders. I always ask people if they're okay with them before showing my pictures. But, if I see a spider outside, even if I don't have my camera with me, I'll usually try to get a nice and close look.

I know its a cop-out to use mythicals for any "favorite" category, but the robot bug with the launcher on its back is just so cool. Also, it completes my headcanon of a past, present, and future form for Scyther. Kabutops (past), Scyther (present), and Genesect (future).

i was just rewatching some of your videos earlier today! i'm so glad to see a new upload! i'm excited to see how it goes, especially escavalier- i saw it in the thumbnail and got so excited, since it's one of my favorite bug types based on design wait oh my god they're all named after thieves because they *steel* oh my god

I also found challenge mode made some parts of the game feel easier, the end probably helps explain why. I've started using normal mode levels caps while playing on challenge mode to ensure it is consistently more of a challenge throughout.

I just wanted to say thank you flygon. Watching your nuzlocks has helped me want to play pokemon again. I stopped for a long time because of life and other things but because of you I have done 2 different locks. Steel in black 2 and water in emerald. Thank you so much flygon.

Fave gen 5 bug is either Leavanny (design wise) or Dwebble/Crustle (I never thought I'd find a crab bug thing cute). Also, I love the Ben Gates/National Treasure reference, one of my favorite movies!

It took me until Bonnie to get the naming theme here (in my defense, I'm watching this before 7am) but this is genius. 10/10. Also my favorite bug design in Gen 5 is Volcarona, but I agree that there are a bunch of good ones.

You've improved a lot since I first watched you. I love your humor. Also have you though about doing a challenge run with the opposite pokemon that your rival gets? Example: in Black and White your rivals get Purlion and Stoutland. The only other pokemon in that area is watchog, that I'd your pokemon.

The theming you add to these adds so much character please never stop doing it. Steel types who steel and your rival being the law is beautiful i love your playthroughs

I always find it difficult to find Pokémon channels that are enjoyable. This is one of them I can’t go without watching. This channel bumped my own Nuzlocke skills and I’ll never get tired of watching these videos. ❤

asking me to pick a favorite gen 5 bug type is so hard, but out of the 3 or so I've actually had the chance to use, Galvantula has definitely been my favorite - though I havent had a chance to use escavlier, that pure-bug evolution or scoliopede so maybe this could change.

I have to agree with you, scolipede is a such a fine steed, gen 5 runs almost don't feel worth it to me if I don't get a chance to catch one. Thankfully there is all Galvantula numb the disappointment if I don't catch the former.

The fact that I really wanted Flygon To make a steel type only cause it's one of my favorite types, I as about to comment on your videos but it seems I didn't have too

“One massive problem…” With so much time remaining, I’m nervous. I really love these videos man, been watching since your first run of Emerald. These things kept me sane finishing up my Master’s and now that I’m faculty they give me something fun to watch when no students show up to office hours!

Hey Flygon, I have an idea for a nuzlocke you could do with the tier list videos that you have been making. You could do this by yourself but It would be more fun with a friend. Choose a game that you have made a tier list video on and play a nuzlocke but your encounters are chosen from when you spin a wheel. The wheel will have S, A, B, C, and F. Both people will spin the wheel 6 times (Unless you want more encounters). You then choose a pokemon from the category that the wheel lands on. Then you can race to see who beats the game first or whoever loses all their pokemon first.

Joltik/Galvantula are my favorite Gen 5 bug types for many reasons! I have a soft spot for Electric types, I hate spiders but love tarantulas, Joltik is cute as anything, and one of the only Pokemon cards I ever owned, given to me by a dear friend to entice me to try the Pokemon franchise, was a Joltik. (It worked, btw.)

A bit weird to say but I love how you describe everything that happens and your thought process. I often listen to videos while working (can’t watch while working tho LOL) so I love when your vids pop up!! Also this run was pretty sharp

While I think Escavilier has the best design of the Unova bugs, my favourite at this point has to be leavanny due to a nuzlocke I was doing of W2, wherein my leavanny Mary wound up carrying the team through the mid game when we were in tight spots. By the time we made it to Undella town, she had officially earned the nickname Bloody Mary. Unfortunately I got into a triple battle involving a Gligar, and Mary on opposite corners of the field. I didn’t know flying type moves could land anywhere on the field, and thus Mary fell to a completely unforeseen acrobatics. Then I t he next battle another good chunk of my team would die, and most of my team would get evicerated by Drayden’s gym trainers, but I would nevertheless make it all the way to the elite four. I haven’t lost yet, I just haven’t actually battled them.

Bruh I almost cried Excadrill almost fainted during Marshall’s fight 😭 One of my favorites ever. Happy this ended up being a deathless run ❤

I think it would be funny if, instead of ruling out challenge mode altogether, you allowed yourself to do challenge mode runs using normal mode level cap. This was a really cool video! Steel is a super cool type, and even though it's kind of overpowered sometimes, I appreciate you showing it off with your own style.
