Even this long paragraph won't be enough to explain all of Nagito-bae. He is someone who went through hell, losing all that was dear to him, and never getting something else back except for money. He distanced himself from people on purpose, that way he won't endanger them. He got 2 diseases, but all he got in return was being sent to Hope's Peak. And think about it, did that really do him much good? He met Junko and became filled with Despair, he cut off his own arm, he became a Servant for kids, he lost his memory (temporarily) to play some game... in which he had to watch his classmates die... and he was the reason for 2 of the deaths. He killed himself in such a painful way, and he had to remember that pain when he woke up. He went through a lot, and as Hidden Gem said, he is a very complex and difficult to understand character, with probably the most depressing backstory I've ever heard of, maybe aside from Eren Jaeger.

^This is one of the best chara analysis on him I've ever read, and you summarised my thoughts on him perfectly, probably better than I can. As a fellow mentally ill person I have a love-hate relationship with him, as in, he's not a good person and I hate relating to him, but he's also one of the most endearing, interesting, well written and well acted characters in the entire franchise, and he makes the entire game tbh, his arc is one of the reasons sdr2 is so great, and it's because of him that the survivors manage to win the game in the first place. His fanbase and hatebase both suck, but I find him infinitely interesting, I pity him a bit tbh, and He Needs Therapy, but, maybe because of his relatable bits, I hate to see him stay hated, "misunderstood", and forgotten/not taken seriously by other characters. He is not a good person, but he is not irredeemable. Unpopular opinion, but the only actual horrible scummy person in the franchise who deserves no redemption is the mastermind. Everyone else, is/was/can become a good kid, no matter what, because they're all confused angsty teenagers in terribly fucked up situations, and they all deserve a second chance. Bottom line, good comment op and person above me, let the poor kids live, Komaeda take your meds and try to hang out normally with the edgy grumpy protagonist and the sleepy girl because they don't hate you for some reason, you lil shit.

AcenPhina I went to this song expecting it to be like the ending of the game that Megumi Ogata also sang(Setting Sail), but I was pleasantly surprised. I feel the exact same way, but also the fact that he wants to "understand him more than anyone else". I mean, doesn't that make it seem like "i want to be more special to him than anyone else"? Or is that just me? I mean, I feel that, with the game, if we combine his actions there with the lyrics here, there is no doubt about his feelings. Even throughout this song he's like "I don't care about worthless, boring people". But he cares about Hinata enough to want to understand him. It's like he desires something in a way. Komaeda wants Hinata to let him try to understand. I don't know how to express this right, but I definitely agree that wanting to understand him sounds stronger than "I love you" coming from a guy like Komaeda this really makes me wish that he wakes up from his coma at some point - I'd like to know more about him

MiNaGi the Phantom I think Komaeda's interest in Hinata has to do with how he believes Hinata is the "embodiment of hope." I don't quite know if it's directly connected to Komaeda's feelings for him, or what to make of this, but it's definitely interesting. I hope (pfft) Komaeda does wake up from his coma in a sequel too, and I'm curious about how he gets affected by the Neo World Program.

let's just keep in mind that the creators confirmed that the "i love, and want to understand him more than anyone else" line is about hinata and it is canon that komaeda had a crush on hinata and that when komaeda asked hinata for his friendship, hinata reacted like he was expecting komaeda to ask more of him and it is canon (at *least* one-sidedly so) brb i'm tearing up

Can we acknowledge his character though? He is not an "uwu smol". He is very complex. Komaeda has gone through a lot and also has frontotemporal dementia AND lymphoma. And he really just wants to be loved. Looking at his death in chapter 5, it's also clear he is very intelligent. He's probably been leaning on hope and luck most of his life and degrades himself often.

of all things this comment was the thing that made me notice the bottom left hand and the fact that Nagito in fact is not drowning in the hotel's pool-- huh.

This song describes Nagito in so many ways, the most noticeable being that the song on the outside is upbeat and happy while it's inside is extremely sad, just like Nagito, who's upbeat and happy on the outside while he endures so much pain and suffering on the inside.

I always thought of this song sounding sad, even without the lyrics.

I wasn't sure about him until the end of the game, but when it all came together for me... Wow. I think he really is the strongest force of hope in the game, definitely more then the indecisive hajime, and though I love Chiaki she always worked to save her friends, but Nagito was all alone. He was willing to be hated just to bring hope to the world.

I agree with you!! I thought the excat same thing about him until the end of the game and before I listened to this song. I think that's why so many people love his character, not the fact that he's obsessed with hope and/or luck, but the fact that he's been lonely from a young age and no one ever wanted to bother with ho!. that's my thoughts anyways.

His idea of hope was twisted to the extreme. Komaeda was purposely made a "hope" antagonist, as he really was mad. It was to prove that you can have hope and still be on the side of despair. Komaeda was an antagonistic look on Naegi.

SPOILERS The song nicely ties into one of the game's themes and the nice contrast between Komaeda and Hinata. Komaeda looks up to the Ultimates while considering his "Ultimate Luck" talent worthless by comparison, but ultimately relies on said talent. Meanwhile, Hinata, who actually doesn't have a talent, ultimately realizes that talent isn't as important as believing in himself, and chooses to make his own future.

Nagito is such a incredible, complex character.

Okay- am I the only one here that isn't either hating him or calling him a cinnamon roll? He did a lot of bad things- and he had some fucked up ideals, but at the same time he had dementia and stage three lymphoma, so he had a reason (among all the other bad shit that happened to him.) like- is he an innocent precious boyo who is just misunderstood? Hell no. But was he fully in the wrong? Also no. Honestly, I feel like he is by far one of the most well written characters, which I guess is why there are such strong opinions on him. With me, I personally kin him. I don't like when people are like "uwu soft boi cinnamon roll". Nagito has a lot of trauma, and his character boils down to more than "cinnamon roll" Hes and orphan, was kidnapped as a child, and is terminally ill canonically. I like his character design overall. Of course, just like all characters, he is not perfect. He has his flaws. But of course, like you said, you love him, or hate him. I respect peoples opinions, but it gets tiring. When I say I like him, people will be like "you only like him because of the fandom!" or "you only like him because hes uwu cinnamon roll!" but i relate to him because of trauma and other things. So yes, I agree with you whole heartedly. The fandom is a little messed up, well, really messed up. This was long enough though lmao, I could go on for days though.

In fact, if I would have a chance to have something with him. Everyone sees Komaeda's side, but not Hinata's. You'd be surprised to know, Hinata has told him, and done many things for him; even some actions a bit obvious. Hinata has had a lot of affection for Komaeda and even when it was all over.

Although, I know they show things with Nanami and Hinata; Hinata has also shown a lot of affection for Komaeda. You just have to pay close attention to Hinata himself; when he died was one of the strongest moments; and the moment in the hospital, his actions are very surprising. Kodaka himself has done fanart and things related to Komahina. In Komaeda's Ova, it shows a very noticeable wink, and another one a little different to see, for less perceptive people.

Komahina had a spark and beginning of romance in the game; and even with Izuru; in the Anime, they leave it very obvious. In fact the only part they interacted, they had more color, than when Hinata was with Nanami. In every thing they take out of Danganronpa, they leave very obvious winks; and I even think they want to make it very clear, that between THEM (not only on Komaeda's part) there is more than a simple friendship. You just have to develop their relationship, having enough to do so.

"I wish I meet the biggest hope..." Hajime is the Ultimate Hope, he's Izuru Kamukura. "I want to see a desire..." Hajime has the biggest desire to have a talent, to be an Ultimate. "I love, and want to understand him more than anyone else." Through out the game, Nagito wanted to know who Hajime actually is. What talent does he have. Why does he feel a similiarity between the both of them.

I am so gay for Megumi Ogata I can't even- I already was obsessed with her voice since Assassination Classroom but now that I've entered the DanganRonpa fandom, I can no longer stop obsessing over Makoto and Komaeda. I mean there's even a theory on them being the same characters (they aren't but I find the joke funny) I'm just so obsessed with this woman's voice. Hmm... I love Itona.... and I didn't even realize she voice-acted him. I am attracted to any character she voice-acts. After comparing it... the difference is tiny, and the main difference would probably just be how she talks heavily/breathes deeply sometimes because of Nagito's sickness. "Other indications of his sickly state include his complexion, hair color and breathy voice" (- Nagito Komaeda Danganronpa Wiki)

I wish there was a chapter where nagito receives everything he desires, crying from happiness and finally being relaxed around his friends, not being anxious about if his luck will kill them..i wish he and his friends beaten up his damn luck together and live the happiest life..that'd be the ultimate hope for him

My theory is that Nagito is pulling himself up because he realizes there is nobody else to save him and the hand on the bottom (Junko) is trying to pull him deeper in the water (despair)

I ate a hope bagel. Once everyday.. And people ask me why I'm so crazy/loud/obnoxious/silly/stupid all of the time.

So, a lot of people seem to think Nagito was only crazy because "IT WAS THE DISEASE MAKING HIM DO BAD THINGS, IT WASN'T REALLY HIM DOING THEM!" Well, the fact is that Nagito was only diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia and Lymphoma right before entering Hope's Peak, and his warped outlook on the world had already manifested before then. Nagito's views about hope and despair are a result of his luck cycle - Nagito has a consistent pattern of experiencing really bad events and then coming out of them unscathed and even better off for it. Nagito himself is protected by his good luck, but everyone around him gets the splash damage from his bad luck and they tend to die. This left him purposely seeking solitude so as to protect the people around him from his bad luck, and is the cause of his obsession with hope - Nagito idolised hope as a coping mechanism which allowed him to deal with the situations he finds himself in regularly as a result of his luck. Over time, this obsession grew and twisted into him believing that only those with talent can embody true hope, and other people are just meaningless trash. His hatred of despair grew as a natural counterpoint to that. Frontotemporal Dementia may account for his weird social behaviours, but it's entirely possible he actually was bullshitting Hajime and he doesn't really have either dementia or lymphoma - remember, Nagito genuinely cares about Hajime and obviously wants him to feel some real compassion for him, telling him a sob story designed to generate sympathy is a good way to do this. The only source of information on it is Nagito's interactions with Hajime, it's not like anyone else can confirm or deny it. Or it could be the truth, but regardless it doesn't fully account for his twisted beliefs. Finally, to everyone saying things like Nagito was the greatest force for hope in SDR2, and that nothing he says is actually wrong, keep in mind, nothing Junko says is technically incorrect either. Nagito may have had ideals and goals which are considered good by most people, but he didn't care at all about the means taken to get there, and he didn't feel any genuine affection and attachment to anyone but Hajime. Nagito is an antagonist first and foremost, and while he may indeed have been a great help to the others - it's true they never would have gotten through most of the trials without him - it was only for the sake of absolute hope, and he couldn't care less about who had to die to reach it. He's *warped* to his core, and was deliberately written that way. He literally only cares about hope overcoming despair, and therefore he believes that an absolute hope can only be created through the existence of absolute despair. He's literally the kind of guy who'd kill someone in order to 'save' the rest without a second thought. And while he may not be as actively malevolent as Junko, he's equally as extreme in his beliefs as she is. In many ways, he's Junko's exact opposite. One purpose of his character is to show that absolutes, no matter which side of the spectrum they are on, are almost never a good thing in reality. Keep in mind BTW, I don't hate Nagito at all, he's my favourite male character and it's his complexity and the depth of his twisted ideals which make him so interesting. But the idealised fangirl version of Nagito doesn't truly represent him any more than the hater's 'evil psychopath' Nagito. He's much, much more complex than either of those interpretations, and simplifying his character to that extent is a disservice to both Nagito's character and Kodaka's writing ability. He's not evil, but neither is he a good person either, and it's important to keep both these thing sin mind about him.

Tl;dr- i really freaking like Nagito cuz he interests me. I give my take on him as a character even tho I'm still trying to understand him myself That's exactly why I love Nagito, and other similarly written characters for that matter. Characters who have such a pure dream (like Nagito's hope. I can't think of a more pure dream than hope) but take it to extremes to get there, and even becoming what they hate the most to get there. It gives them such a complex and even more realistic feel to them. Because people aren't as cut and dried and just being good and evil. And Nagito represents that amazingly. In the end his goal is to let the world feel hope, which is great. But he believes it can only happen through sacrifice and getting past despair, even if he has to die or bring the despair himself. Of course he takes it to the very extreme, but the concept stands. Everyone has different morals and stuff but we all try to do what we think is best and that's exactly what Nagito is. It doesn't always work out and other people don't always agree. In the end we all have to do what we'll regret the least. That's what he represents to me anyway. He's absolutely twisted and extreme and I don't agree with a lot of what he did, but he really was trying to create the purest form of hope in the way he thought best. Also throwing in his not caring in the least about what happens to himself and the fact he stated he wants to feel what its like for someone to love him before he dies. Not to mention Junko's brainwashing him into loving her and despair, the two things he hates most. He's a good mix of character traits that i love and makes for a tragic, misunderstood, yet very likable character in my opinion. Disclaimer i have no idea if I'm coming across at all the way I want to, explaining my thoughts clearly especially on a complicated topic like this is difficult.

I love Komaeda, not only because his fanart got me into Danganronpa, but also because he’s so complex and has so much depth. Always keeps you on your toes. He’s just such an interesting character

I like how you're freaking out about 1 or 2 lines without paying attention to the rest of the song. The whole song is not about komahina. It's about Nagito's belief that hope will always beat despair.

I'm very late to SDR2 (did DR1 a long time ago) but Nagito was really a whole journey. I liked him at the start, and then when he became a more dangerous and unpredictable entity sowing chaos everywhere, I kept trying to figure him out while jumping between finding him amusing and annoying. Playing in his perspective both gave me more insight and took some away because they hid what exactly he found out - and what made him make such an abrupt demeanor change. And even in 2-5 while I was reeling at the terrible way to go I didn't know /why/ he would go to such lengths... like what did he see in the files.... And when that is finally revealed, there's too much happening to go back to dissecting Nagito's motivations at that point. But after completing the game, and coming here, the pieces finally clicked. Despite how much he kept seemingly changing during the game, he was always always consistent to his initial character. It doesn't excuse anything he did and how he went about doing it, but he isn't the one changing, it's the circumstances and what he found out that shaped the actions he decided to take. Amazing character.

Trying to figure out Nagito as a character is a journey and a half... And I don't even know what exactly it is about him, he just kinda hits the exact things I love in a character. I'm thinking of playing through Goodbye Despair again just so i can really try to understand him more. There really is just something about his character that I completely love and idk what it is. Maybe its the morally gray, maybe its the doing whatever it takes to achieve his goals, or maybe its the fact that he wants to be loved. He's just such a compelling character

every time i listen to this song I think about how much I fucking love Komaeda

Sometimes, whenever I have a bad day, I come here and listen to this song. I know it's cliched and weird to be feeling so strongly about a song sung by a fictional character, but I just love everything about this. The softness of Komaeda's voice, the feelings Ogata-san purred into it, the "I love and want to understand him more than anyone else" line that makes my KomaHina loving heart beat just a bit faster. He can finally be happy together with his hope, and is given the chance to understand him, just as he can finally understand Komaeda.

Yes!! Everytime I read the lyrics of the song I think about Nagito´s painful life and in the end I cry for him... I believe that is because the song is so powerful and show us how he always felt in the island. Nagito is one of the most creative characters that I have ever seen

+Midnight Moon He's not necessarily a good person. He doesn't really value human life, just hope. He values the hope his friends represented and harbored within them, not the people themselves. Once he learns they are the remnants of despair he begins hating them, then hatches a nearly successful plan to kill them all. He's supposed to love Hajime, but he can, without a second thought, attempt to kill him in the name of hope. He values nothing other than or above hope. He believes that if he spreads ultimate hope, he is causing absolute good, and he will stop at nothing to see his dream come to fruition

It hurts to think that the character hated by all the other characters was just trying to fight the despair and bring hope to them all. Nagito deserved so much better than he got, in my opinion.

I absolute love Nagito. And these lyrics make me love him even more. "I wish I meet the biggest hope, glistens than other which I want to see a desire, glistens than anyone else *I love and want to understand him more than anyone else* *more, more than anyone else."* As twisted as he was, in the end, his dream and ideals were bright. This song and just his dream makes me want to cry, knowing what ends up happening to him anyway. He sacrificed himself without seeing the ultimate hope but died believing in his luck and hope. It makes this even sadder that he saw no worth in himself or his life. From the beginning to the end, he never loved himself... :,(

At the start of the game I just was thinking "shut up nagito" because he talked so much and was so cheery. (Spoilers) Then I began to like him a lot more after chapter 1. His character is amazing. His backstory is so sad. His death was so surprising. I had to take a moment to just process what happened. I still can't believe the pain that he would've felt while waiting for the gass. Team dr did an amazing job on nagito!

There's Danganronpa 2.5 OVA where he is he main character. It's good (it's a short anime, 1 episode roughly 25 mins long)
