You can understand this as horizontal slopes of two rails trailng crossing point ..1 in 12 means 12 unit length is required to maintain 1 unit gap between legs at crossing point

there will be two acute and two obtuse angles in diamond crossing.

crossings are always designated using crossing number that is 1 in N, and there are three methods to calculate it. basically it means how much length you have to travel along its bisector to get one unit spread between its two arms. more the crossing number gradual is the spread and more speed potential
