My dad took me to get my first pair and would go to my classes and gossip with the other moms meanwhile we were trying to pull each other’s hair out inside of the studio. It was hilarious because I lost my temper and broke a door once (my ballet teacher and I had a long talk about it) and he was sitting with the girl’s mom who had just pissed me off cracking jokes when I busted out of the studio cursing.

I love that the shoe makers are so valuable, it just makes me smile. I watched a video recently about an African American (I believe) ballerina getting her first pair that she didn’t have to pancake because they were her skin tone. She was so happy that it really hit home how ridiculous it was that it took this long for that to be a thing, nonetheless it was fabulous

My studio did a semester long class where we learned about pointe shoes, tried on tons of brands and sizes (we had a boutique with the studio) and kept track of what we liked, and finally picked out shoes, then learned how to sew and wear the elastics and ribbons. We didn’t always stick with the original choice and since we sold pointe shoes at our studio we had shoes and brands almost on demand. Only looking back now as adult do I know how much of a blessing that is. As an adult being refit a few times; it just isn’t the same.

1:00 , that's "me". As an adult beginner, I was allowed by the teacher of the highest adult level to come in the studio to watch the "big girls" (some are older, some are younger then me). The part about not knowing what's going on reminded me of the first pair I got! I didn't know my toes were not supposed to overlap, and when I told them I was uncomfortable they dismissed it as "normal." For my second pair, I went to the gaynor minden store in NYC and it was SO different! I found out that the pain I thought was normal actually wasn't, and was so much more comfortable in well fitted shoes!

I loved the docu-series On Pointe. You were the person who immediately popped in my head when I watched this episode. I almost cried watching the last episode when the administration and staff had to make the painful decision to close the school because of the growing pandemic. You could see how devastated the kids all were, especially the ones graduating to internships at NYCB. I was physically relieved when they pointed out that the internships are simply on hold. It was also sad to see the kids having their classes via Zoom, yet I was impressed with their creativity and determination to make themselves studio equipment like building themselves barres and repurposing space so that they could practice, or making do with furniture they had at home. The little boy who was using what looked like a magazine rack was really making the most of the situation and their ginger boy Tendu was a hoot to watch as he “crashed” the class by climbing on the rack and demanding to be pet during the exercises. I sincerely hope that Disney considers doing a second series catching up with these young dancers and the school staff as we begin to come out all of of this. I really want to know how the young man with the foot injury has fared and what happened to the little girls in the level 4 class who got their first pointe shoes, but then had their (in person) training abruptly halted. I don’t know how that could continue without a teacher right there to guide them through those vital first lessons.

question: what would happen if a dancer goes to a studio/school/company that only allows one brand but they don’t fit that brand? would they just be allowed to wear another brand or would they just get a really close fit?

  • @hagridbanana

    @hagridbanana

    3 жыл бұрын

@Hannah The Llama I’m not a professional but I am a dancer, usually you don’t have a particular brand of shoe but it really depends on how strict the school is. If it’s a super strict school then they would probably get a size that’s closest in fitting but if it’s not as strict they would probably let you get another brand, after all, pointe shoes already give you pain so getting the wrong shoes can give you much more pain and you wouldn’t want that, not a professional, don’t quote me on this.

You can do ballet 'casually' though. Most kids who do ballet don't end up devoting their life to it, and when you're casually dancing you also don't go through pointe shoes at the rate pros do. It would still be expensive, but I don't think it's more expensive than other sports. Maybe it depends on your school as well though, the one I went to as a kid was very DIY when it came to performances, most of the costumes were made by parents, so it wasn't that expensive. But if you have to buy all the costumes that would of course be added costs which could make it more expensive.

That TV show reminds me of the book "A Very Young Dancer", which follows a student at the same ballet school, as she gets the role of Marie in "The Nutcracker". I recently saw an online article about the girl who was the subject of the book. Sadly, like so many promising young dancers, she found that the ballet world wasn't for her, and she left it for a very different life that was a better fit for her. One of the other young dancers in the book was Charlotte d'Amboise, who became successful on Broadway.

Chacott’s were my first pair of shoes as well; I was 9 at the time, and I'm 33 now, so 20ish years or so sounds about right, lol. I went through so many different brands of pointe shoes when I was dancing, starting with Chacott’s, which was always one of my favorites for several reasons, but Freed’s were the last brand that I used, which became another favorite of mine while I was at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater’s summer program when I was 13, but I will say, they were precisely how you described as far as being an amazing shoe once one breaks them in just right, but that they do take some getting used to when dancing with a brand new pair, lol-those memories came flooding back so vividly. Freed’s also, at least for me, and from what I can remember, were one of those shoes that had an awfully short window or period with them being perfect before they would get to the “I know I need a new pair of shoes because I'm dancing on mush” zone where it was becoming more and more difficult to dance, but they were also comfy and quiet, and your teacher/the artist director is telling you, and in the “nicest” of screaming her f’ing head off ways *[what, just me? lol],* to get a new pair, but you're dreading that first class with brand new shoes, lol. Ah, memories. 😂

I've always wanted to dance en pointe since I was little. I quit dance when I was younger simply because my parents refused to send me to a school where I would eventually learn point work. Now that I'm 22 I've been craving to get back in the studio and learn, but I've had so many injuries to my knees, hips, and ankles that I'm afraid I'll seriously injure myself. Since I can dislocate my larger joints so easily ( my hips pop out if I so much as walk a weird step lol) I'm afraid I'll dislocate so bad I'll need surgery to fix it😬. But pointe has ALWAYS been a desire of mine. Before I was introduced to horses😂. I love watching your videos as it makes me feel like I'm still a part of the ballet community

When I first started on pointe back in the 70s my local shop had no fitting and only Capezio. They would ask "what's your shoe size?" and then hand you a shoe two sizes smaller than that to try. They'd look at it ask does it hurt and then send you out. I don't think I ever had a shoe I felt right in. My arches are high so my shoes would always be too big while on pointe if they fit while flat. I always had shoes that were too tight unless I was on pointe so my toes never felt OK :( Watching these little ones get an actual fitting makes me very happy for them.

She struggled to get up onto her block more and generally sat back, but when she left, she switched to Russian pointed and she found pointe work a lot easier. She also broke them sooo fast, like after two lessons she would need new ones 😂😩

At my studio I used to be in ballet 3 with one another girl named Juliette. She acted like she was better then me and could do ballet better then me even though u had been there for longer. We both moved up to level 4 and 1 semester in (august to December) and she’s already on pointe. The rest of my class is not on pointe and she thinks she is all that just because she is finally on pointe. She has killer arches and feet’s because of genetics, while I have to work for pretty feet. I have been stretching everyday, trying my hardest in ballet class, and i hope to soon get on pointe!

I started pointe right before my country locked down for COVID and I miss it so much >.< I’m an adult dancer, and I got them just under 3 years after I started dancing. I’ll probably need to be refitted when class restarts because the shoes (Bloch Balance European) are so short they’re cutting into my heel.

The students still have to buy their own shoes, so it seems particularly awful that they have to wear Freed. At least Chacott is now an option with the acquisition, but I feel bad for the people who never get the perfect fit.

I believe they do get a discount on Freeds at least! But I agree - they should be allowed to use whatever works for them.

@@starringbecky78 YOU conform to the school. The school does NOT conform to you. Schools that allow any shoes run the very real risk of kids coming in with shoes bought off Wish or Amazon. My daughter's school is a Freed school. My favorite shoes are Bloch Axiom. She couldn't try Axiom, but we know that, and if we don't like it, then we can put her in another school.

@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria I disagree. 1) no teacher would let a student go en pointe in a pair of wish shoes 2) no dancer who is ready to go en pointe would buy wish shoes because they understand how serious it is (I could see really young and new dancers doing it) and 3) the teachers can just say “no wish ballet shoes”

@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria That can be solved by having an approved list of brands, not just one brand. There's no reason to force everyone into one shoe manufacturer that might not fit well, that's how you get injuries. Give students a list of brands, then they can't buy crappy brands but they still have some freedom in choice.

  • @JessieBanana

@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria That is utter and complete nonsense. Buying pointe shoes off of wish is not a thing that dancers do. Most schools have a relationship with the dance stores close to them and teachers are often in communication with fitters, but even when they aren’t a serious dancer will seek out the best store/fitter in the area. Your feet cannot conform to a shoe. That isn’t a thing. You can buy inserts, jet glue, and try and make a shoe work for you, but you can’t change your feet. Schools have a business relationship with these companies and that is what this is about. Some companies prefer certain shoes because of their repertoire and technique, but Freed is not the only light flexible pointe shoe on the market suitable for Balanchine. Many shoes can be made that way.

Hey guys, so I am soon getting my 3rd pair of pointe shoes and I really really need some advice. I went for a fitting at Bloch and they asked if I was allowed split sole shoes because my feet are apparently very very strong for someone at my level, and i wasn’t sure. So I didn’t buy anything that day and I asked my teacher what she thought, and she said that she didn’t really know anything about them so had no valid judgement. In a couple of weeks I am going to go back to Block to get fitted again, and I really need someone to explain the advantages and disadvantages of split soles. Josephine I really really hope you could do a video on this type of pointe shoes please!!!!!!!!!!!
