Point of order on weirdness: Peter Dutton's 'amazing story' interrupted by Anthony Albanese

7/11/2016 Peter Dutton tells a rambling story about bikies, CFMEU, speaking Chinese and building construction sites before Anthony Albanese raises a point of order on weirdness. Dutton returns to the story and refers to Bill Shorten as 'Bikie Bill'.

    The part that makes this gold is Speaker Tony Smith's smirk after Albo's point of order. Whilst he has his job to do (cuts him off and the mic) you can see him chuckling to himself.

    You do realize the speaker Tony Smith is an ex lnp grub so of course he smirks at lnp gaffs at others proving he has less credibility than the party he endears himself too.Now just think if you play a sport,and have a one sided ref every weekend stuffing up all your games and effort you put into it. @@alamatrix488 Not in Australia. While the Speaker is by convention a member of the party who has a majority of seats in the House, and they only retain their position as long as they have the confidence of the House (in other words the Government, as the government always controls a majority of seats in the House), the Speaker plays no role in partisan politics. They play no role in the day to day business of "governing" (passing bills etc). Their role is purely to chair proceedings and the only time they get a vote is when it is a tied vote, and even then, they are constrained by convention on how they can exercise that vote - if it is a vote to proceed to the next stage of debate on a matter, they must vote in favour for debate to proceed, if it is a final vote as to whether the bill becomes law, they must vote in favour of the status quo (against the motion/bill). Whilst the Speaker's role in Australia isn't as independent as the Speaker in the UK (in Australia the Speaker retains their political party membership and stands under their political party banner in elections), it is certainly independent from the day to day policy making aspects of governing. That is left up to the Prime Minister and Ministers to run the policy agenda and negotiate passage of bills with Members and Senators.

    Parliament does not run the country. The public servants and departmental workers do. They keep the country running, whilst parliament just decides which legislation goes through and scutinises the ministries. Who cares, if parliament is immature; as longs as the public servants are doing their job behind the scenes, it is fine. Personally, I think, that the more passionate the politics the better.

Fortunately I like people that lead by example, I played that "who's the most popular" game when I was swiming captain at a private school, if you think being popular is what being a good leader is about then your going to have a hard time in getting people to do what they need to do. A good politician is like a good boss, they lead from the top not try to be everyone's best mate, it doesn't work!,??

    I'm continually gobsmacked at how much shear crap the Australian House does and is allowed to do. People say the British House of Commons is terrible; the moment Dutton referred to the Leader of the Opposition as "Bikie Bill," the chair would have demanded he withdraw that. Afterwards, if he continued ranting and rambling for about 3 seconds, Dutton likely have been named and thrown out of the House. Don't get me started on "our" President (I'm American) but our House of Representatives and Senate operate under very, very tight rules; you may only refer to another member by "honorable gentleman or lady," and the state or "the Rep./Sen." and the state. "Bikie Bill," or any other such crap would be ruled out of order and the member would either have to speak in order or yield the floor. No offense to Australians but this continual waste of time is ridiculous; at least it limits how much time they can spend on legislation to harm the Australian people.

    Seth Tubman Yeh cause the Brits are all up tight PC pussies. All running away from the Muslim invasion cause they didn't have the guts to stand up and use derision. Don't worry you can come here and call white Aussies casual racists like many other Brits who still hold attachment to their soft ways. (Au is 5% Brits) The western world has turned soft and British men are the softest. Shame on you all really. They get over their crumpet ways after six months or so then appreciate life a bit more after recovering from the shell shock.

    True but these people are supposed to be national legislators. It would be nice if they could get through a question without continual points of order from the other side (either of them) and rulings, as well as behaving worse than school children. And these blokes get paid? Sounds more like fun than work. And the British have a sense of dignity and decorum; from what I've seen, all the Aussies have are bad manners and fake British accents.

  • @sethtubman1229

    @sethtubman1229

    Well let me say first of all that I apologize if you felt I was mocking the Australian accent; I absolutely was not and as I review what I wrote, I didn't make any reference to the Aussie accent because I don't have a problem with it. My family's from New England in the States and parts of the Aussie accent remind me of the New England accent. That was a stupid, ignorant American who gives the rest of us a bad name. I assure you I have more tact than that, especially to your face. I do own a passport and would travel but alas like many Americans, I don't have the money. From what I've read, Australians receive 20 days paid vacation by law; Americans receive none. In the private sector, vacation is entirely voluntary and at the employer's discretion. Even public employees who do receive paid leave, have to build it over many years. Most employees don't even have paid sick leave. Unless you work for 15+ years, you're unlikely to get more than 10 days even if it's paid leave. Makes it kind of hard to jet off to Europe or Latin America (or Australia) to learn more about the world and expand our cultural horizons if you only get 10 days holiday and $10 an hour; it takes the better part of a day each way to fly to and from Europe, given the plane schedules and delays nowadays and plane flights are very expensive from our point of view. Actually, what I meant by the Australian House is the constant oneupsmanship it seems. Endless points of order from the Manager of Opposition Business or the Leader of the House about what a member or the minister said, someone claiming words were offensive or whatnot, people being continually thrown out under 94a; rather than doing the people's business (not that my Government is any better), it seems to be who can score a point with the Speaker that isn't overruled. I'm not going to presume whether you're Labour or Liberal, so I won't give my personal views on various Australian politicians; suffice to say they seem to spend a lot of time trying to outmaneuver one another on procedure rather than substance.

  • @sirsillybilly

    Seth Tubman Fair points, apologies for the accent rant. I met people from New England on a flight and I thought they were from England. Not just the accent but the softer mannerisms. It makes sense with the cost of travel. I hadn't thought about that or holidays. I didn't know that. I always thought that America had so much to see and do so they travelled local. I also thought they had a fear of the outside world with their media being so insular and polarising. It is amazing what you say about workers rights. Australia is better but it is going the same direction with wages having stagnated in the last ten to fifteen years while inflation marches on. People have become asset rich but liquid poor (if they own a house ) as the cost of living and housing had gone through the roof. It's estimated half of under 30 y/o won't be able to buy a house. This is all exacerbated by mass immigration. I think there are parallels with America (as the rest of the west ) with mass immigration over supplying the labor market, keeping wages caped while driving demand drawing on the public purse. This game of point scoring in politics has been encouraged by the media. The politicians know that the game is about being popular. To be so one has to be in the limelight and get their six second grab for the nightly news. The short three year election cycle means nothing gets done as they are so focused on popularity rather than policy. It suits the lobbyists too as new blood can be bought. We have had a revolving door of Prime ministers as a result. Yeh it's just a massive farce as most politics is. The one shining light of difference I think is America with trump. He is actually a supreme politician I believe in swimming against the tide and being proactive. Having said that he is a politician selected not elected. I don't think the game has changed just the narrative. I'm apolitical at the moment given both major parties are the same coin being flicked by outside influence. I was a Turnbull supporter all my life saying he will be Prime Minister one day. The day he got elected I knew he was no different. I'd say Im a nationalist and will be voting as such given the Chinese are using soft tactics to overtake assets and exert their influence in the region. They're recent record on human rights and respect for business ethics and the environment makes me very concerned. Not just the economics but the cultural push where they don't integrate and don't respect locals. Come to Sydney and you'll ask if it is Shanghai as many do. They are ok but they are also 1.35 billion and on our doorstep. There is a lot of paranoia as we introduced the White Australia policy to kick them out cause they were doing what they are doing now, undermining local rules to gain a foothold. ASIO said recently they are a greater threat to our security then terrorism. Interesting times indeed. Unfortunately I think world war is inevitable as things reach a head. I also think it's being fomented. Thanks for taking the time to explain.
