Poetry "Ode to Envy" [Sappho]

Although earlier #literature had been sustained by the social consensus of the collective vision expressed in myths and legends, Sappho was free to be critical, to point out the gaps and problems in the opinions received by her society.
Ode to Envy (Fr. 31 E. M. Voigt), is a #poem by Sappho that stages the infinite emotions that are unleashed in a person when jealousy arises.
Sappho represents in verses the impulsive drive typical of this feeling (which we can indicate as somewhat “unintelligent”). A very widespread feeling, we can say it involves many people.
In the moment one loves or desires someone, instinct takes over and reason becomes weak and often disrespectful to the one who should be loved unconditionally.
In the name of jealousy, the worst things have been done; this feeling has generated the worst in human beings.
Sappho managed to represent, thanks to this ode, the uncontrollable and uncontrollably impulses that jealousy generates. All this with a harmony of verses that takes one's breath away.
Sappho confesses the deep disturbance that overcomes her when witnessing a scene where the desired person is with someone else.
#Poetry "Ode to Envy" [Sappho]
He seems to me equal to the gods
who is at your side, listening
to a sound so sweet while you speak
and laugh lovingly. Immediately
my heart stirs in my chest
just by seeing you, and my voice
is lost on my inert tongue.
A subtle fire quickly spreads across my skin,
and I have darkness in my eyes and the roar
of blood in my ears.
And all in sweat and trembling
like withered grass, I turn pale:
and death does not seem distant
from me, seized by the mind.
