In Poems from the Sikh Sacred Tradition, Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh, a foremost expert on Sikhism, has given us a fresh, new translation of Guru Nanak's classic poems for the twenty-first century. Singh presents a selection of spiritual lyrics rooted in the Guru's pluralistic vision and central values of equality, inclusivity and civic action. In conversation with celebrated author and translator Navtej Sarna, she discusses the core values that shaped both the translations and the original text that form the groundwork of the Sikh world view.
Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh is the Chair and Crawford Professor of Religious Studies at Colby College in the USA. Her interests focus on poetics and feminist issues. She has published extensively in the field of Sikh Studies. Her books hot from the press include Poems From the Sikh Sacred Tradition and Janamsakhi Paintings of Guru Nanak.
Navtej Sarna has been a professional diplomat for nearly four decades and was India’s Ambassador to the United States, High Commissioner to the UK, Ambassador to Israel, and Secretary at the Foreign Ministry. He has recently authored the novel Crimson Spring. His earlier books include the novels The Exile and We Weren’t Lovers Like That, the short story collection Winter Evenings, and several works of non-fiction.
Sudha Murty, Founder of Infosys Foundation, was one of the first women engineers to start her career at TELCO (now Tata Motors). A prolific writer in English and Kannada, her books have been translated into all major Indian languages and have sold over 30 lakh copies around the country. She is a columnist for English and Kannada dailies with 30 books and more than 250 titles to her credit - including novels, non-fiction, children’s books, travelogues, technical books, and memoirs. Recipient of nine honorary doctorates, Sudha Murty, has also been awarded the Rajyotsava Award from the Government of Karnataka, the Padma Shri from the Government of India, the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award, the R.K. Narayan Award for Literature, the Attimabbe Award from the Government of Karnataka for excellence in Kannada literature and the Lifetime Achievement by Crossword Book Awards.
