    I came for podracing, stayed for intro to jet turbines

  • @thebreadcircus

    @thebreadcircus

    Researching this was quite the learning experience! You can tell I still didn't know exactly how to use the word "turbine" when writing this. Turbine gets used to mean "an engine that spins", as well as the blades behind the combustion chamber. Until recently, I'd never noticed anything missing from the cross-sections drawings. When you know what to look for, though, it's either the funniest mistake ever... or it was an intentional design choice. A really strange sci-fi concept that nobody had ever appreciated until now. -DZ

    @@thebreadcircus You knew nothing about turbines before doing this video?! Wow, you sound pretty versed in them. I know a LOT about turbines, and I have no objections on your description of them. I noticed immediately that those aren't real jet engines, and was pleased when you commented on it. As you've said, they have no turbines. (Agent JayZ short video explanation was also perfect)

    This made me realize that pod racing is not just jets, but also chariots (cables linked to engines, like horses), probably inspired from the sword and sandal movies Lucas used to watch

  • @youtubeaccountlol4942

    @youtubeaccountlol4942

    Definitely true. Lucas made THE hot rod movie after all. What's cool aboue the pod race is it's also Ben Hurr, NASCAR and F1 all in one beautiful mixing pot. The flags at the beginning are pure Hurr, along with the chariot style racers. Then the sound of the pods (quite literally) screams late 90s/early 2000s Formula One exhaust. And finally the aggressive driving styles are very Stock Car/ NASCAR influenced. Heres a real fun fact, the 8-bit song used at 1:07 is actually Fuel by Metallica, which NBC and TNT used as the NASCAR theme in the early 2000's during race intros and commercial breaks. It was also the theme for a Hot Wheels game featuring Kyle Pettys #44 Pontiac NASCAR. A minor detail, but it's either an insane coincidence choosing that song or The Bread Circus' editors knew their NASCAR history when they chose that song

    Amusing alternative; Clegg finished 7th because everyone else crashed, but he ran to finish 7th. I feel like Podracing is absolutely one of those races where so long as you cross that line, that's all that matters.

So basically he suggested the whole podrace happened just because Qii-gon had to get his gambling fix lol

    I also like how the 4 pod one malfunctioned. It is a good way to explain why they use 2 engines without going through exposition. With racing vehicles you want to do everything possible to lighten it so you have no redundancies therefore you want to avoid complexity whenever possible. You also need the engines to be balanced so that you will go straight but also easily unbalanced so that you can make tight turns. Having 4 engines makes that a lot more complicated and unreliable.

    I remember Racer Revenge fondly. My father and I would spend hours on splitscreen, and taking turns running tournament mode, usually trading off when I was done with homework. By the time we unlocked Sebulba, we were on a pretty even field; though I came to main Sebulba and fly dirty like he did in the movie. My father angrily points this out, to which my snarky six year old self replied, "But that's how Sebulba would race.". I remember looking in the concept art special menu and seeing the designs for Darth Maul's podracer and wondering how to unlock it, never crossing my mind that maybe you couldn't; these were simpler times, after all, before the entire secret of a game got leaked a full month before it ships international on the regular. Nowadays, whenever I get the itch, set my PS2 up, and pop that game back in with our old save file, I run Beedo or Dud Bolt... But my dad was always a Mars man.

    The noise you hear from sebulbas engines sounds like a piston compressor for a scuba tank and a low compression pump at the same time. Could be for the fuel, holding the fuel tanks at 4500psi would make sense for the unfamiliar fuel tanks. Like precompressed diesel.

    The pod race sequence is a big part of what inspired me to go into a career in audio (along with watching old Genesis concert videos). The sound design throughout the scene is just immaculate. The weird baffling inside of sebulbas pod could be responsible for the chugging sound his pod makes, perhaps due to weird resonances that could build up in such a cavity. Maybe it's an intentional design feature that improves performance?

    podracers could use a different heat source than fuel for the jets too. given the power of the reactors in setting if they were producing heat instead of electrical power, running the compressed air through that instead of a combustion chamber would run a jet engine just as well.

    The scene with the detached control cables was in fact a deleted scene, not present in the original cinema cut. Rightly so, I think, because it would have been a real stretch of the imagination to think that Anakin could get a situation like that under control with just a few switches and a convenient tool for just this occasion. Also, aside from Neva Kee, there is one other podracer from the game that is not in the Boonta Eve Classic, but does make a sort of cameo appearance in the movie. Fud Sang. Anakin has a little sculpture/action figure of him that you can see in the scene where he's packing his things to leave Tatooine. It's surprising that he does, considering that Fud Sang was only allowed to canonically race on Oovo IV, where he was an inmate in the maximum security prison located there, serving multiple consecutive life sentences. Why Anakin had an action figure of someone like that, I don't know, but it's always a cool little detail if you spot it in the movie.

    12:35 In the book they explain how it works. Jet engines have spinning parts so they have centrifical force. On a plane usually you have 2 engines spinning in opposite direction to cancel out this effect though on single engine fighters this is something you have to account for. The engines on the pod aren't attached to anything and actually rely on the centrifical force to hold them in place. They are perpetually trying to pull apart with the energy beam binding them together.

    1) You seem to have put a lot more thought in how podracers work than anyone who was involved in making the movie. I bet those people were like "magic space technology go brrrrrr!" 2) I remember reading somewhere, on some canon source back in the day, that the podracers that have big turbine fans in the front use jet engine, while those that have no fans, use rocket engines. 3) You left out some of the game exclusive podracers, I think Bozzie Baranta, Fud Sang and the secret characters Jin Reeso and Cy Yunga have some of the best looking and most interesting podracers. 4) Aldar Beedos podracers is my favorite to use ingame. I usually beat the whole game with anakins stock podracer, then after I've beaten all maps, I buy the upgrades. After that they no longer take damage between the races, so I can keep my podracers upgraded forever and replay any level I like. Also, that salute by aldar beedo is just, eh, suspicious xD

Especially the cockpit of his pod was cool and stood out as being the longest in lenght. Fully upgraded his pod could rival the speed of Quadrinaros, at least in the Dreamcast version. Thank you! Our intention was to create the definitive video on this topic. Granted, there aren't too many podracer videos out there, at least not yet. We thought it'd be a good idea to make a decent one, something that could become a classic. -DZ

    @@thebreadcircus Decent is a hard undersell. The only way this could've been more in depth or detailed is if you had someone from ILM or Lucas himself talking about podracing. As Palpatine said it best in EP1, we will watch your your career with great interest.

    The VHS of Phantom Menace that I owned had that shorter Podrace sequence edit that you spoke of. I can't remember if anything else about the movie was changed, but the podrace was noticeable. To be honest though, I preferred the shorter cut. To this day, it's still jarring to see the additions to the scene in the Bluray version. Not only are they more cartoony in logic and throw off the pacing a little, but they also suffer in terms of the character animations and textures. Maybe due to the fact they weren't used in the original theatrical/VHS cut and so weren't priority... I could just be forever used to the original version I grew up with, though!

    Interesting, good to have that confirmation! I definitely prefer the original versions of any Star Wars movie that had been later changed. For TPM in particular, I loved Yoda being a puppet instead of the later CGI versions. -DZ

    There was an extended version of episode 1 on tape, I forget what all was added but I'm pretty sure the podrace was made like 10 minutes longer. What you saw on TV that didn't have anakin catching the control cable, was probably the theatrical version (or just edited for time) and then you had the extended version on VHS

    I had this on N64 as a kid, i did totally play a lot of anakin but sometimes i hopped around when i did 2 player split screen. I think the only reason i really remember neva kee, or rather the pod, even though it wasn't seen in the movie, is because it's so different from all the others. Also i always liked dud bolt just for the design and name, nothing more.

    We didn't know about that until two months ago! One of the prominent members of our discord community is a big fan of podracing, and he overturned the knowledge we'd taken for granted over the past twenty years. He managed to find Neva Kee in several different scenes, both before and during the race. I doubted a few of them at first, but he recreated a single frame of the starting grid in a 3D program, and proved this could only be Neva Kee peeks in from the edge of the screen. Incredible stuff, I was blown away by this revelation. We'll have an updated version of this video out shortly, in a compilation with the rest of the TPM series. -DZ

    I remembered this game during the past year and found the CD-ROM at my parents' place, but I've not tried to install it yet. Knowing what he77 my Rogue Squadron 1 brings me trying to play it I've been afraid it wouldn't be worth it. Maybe it would. And maybe it would work no problem.

    I wonder if his force abilities also played a role in his mechanical aptitude. One of the things about the force is that it gives those gifted with it more awareness of the entire world, which could possibly extend to non-biological objects such as pod-racers or droids.

    I watched the whole video. I did play the old podracing game as at least my area it was a popular option to set up a gaming console in your business with the podracing game for the kids to play. I believe they could make a new game that would be more successful than the original if they added elements similar to Mario Kart in particular the ability to do dastardly things to the people you are racing against where in the old podracing game the focus was on racing itself.

    The podracing game on the N64 is an incredible game when you think about that system's limitations, I think it along with only a small number of other titles on the system had a consistently high framerate, which is unheard of for the N64 normally, because 90% of it's library of games ran between 10 and 15fps (only other games were Nintendo's and Rareware's games that ran at 20 to 30fps but even those games dropped down to 20fps). Meanwhile Podracing ran at 30fps consistently, very smooth fast paced game where you hit 500+km/h. Pod Racing had so much potential to be something awesome as either a basis for a series or used for video games - imagine a free to play service game based on Pod Racing? But Lucas Arts did nothing with it beyond just one game for the N64 which took 20 years to port to PC, Lucas films did nothing with it and after Disney bought Star Wars they did nothing with it.

    Pod Racing is actually my favorite part of Phantom Menace, its a different kind of intense action we don't see in star wars. And not that it would have saved the movie, but I thought it would have been cool if Last Jedi brought back pod racing instead of those horses they used.
