I love the card panel and I would use that as the back panel and then make an oversized fit cardigan from it.

that's such a cute idea!! i had originally liked the idea of doing the card right side up on the front, and upside down on the back. but maybe i'll think about using this panel for the back of a cardigan instead!

I LOVE your black tank top with the wedge straps! I would definitely be interested in a hand-knitting pattern if you were to write one up!

thank you so much!! it's a super simple top but i do think the little picot details give it a little bit of specialness!

Your Star knitted piece is amazing! Have you considered keeping it and adding a back to it to make it into a throw pillow? Then you could make the design again in the size you are hoping for. I'm loving the picot edge top you are wearing and would really enjoy seeing your progress on the knitting machine and exactly how that works! The Prep School cardi is so adorable and I can't wait to see it finished. I would love to make it! 😍

All your projects are gorgeous!!! The collared cardi is really cute, it makes me think of 1950s Chanel (?) twinsets. As for the books--I've been meaning to read Convenience Store Woman as I found Earthlings to be really engaging (but very scarring lol). I find the issue of what work and what ambitions are valued by society to be really interesting. I definitely approach it through a class lens--like (at least here in the UK) white-collar jobs in medicine, law, academia, etc are probably seen as the most 'respectable'. Like they come w connotations of intelligence, hard work, individualistic excellence etc, but they're also so very linked to class here. (E.g. the stat for what % of students of medicine have a relative who works in the field is surprisingly high). I think there is an argument to be made that these value judgements about jobs are related to issues about what is considered art (and how fiber arts are often overlooked). Your point about jobs valued by society vs jobs that people find personal fulfillment/enjoyment in is really interesting--i hadn't considered that people can find fulfillment in the physical process of + ensuing flow state involved in creating (rather than mainly the end results/products). Sorry for the rambling I got a bit carried away😭

no i love this comment, tysm for sharing your thoughts!! i think you're def right about how the jobs considered "elite" or the most impressive are usually gatekept by education and class! it'll be so interesting to see whether AI ends up turning some of these class signifying professions on their heads bc it can already write law contracts or suggest medical diagnoses.. it's also interesting to see people talk about how rote elements of some jobs will be replaced by AI (like for computer programming) but for many, there's a satisfaction that comes from not just thinking about how to do the task, but actually doing it too. likeee weird to think that actually writing your own code may one day be considered as quaint as making your own clothes :')

@@starcrossedknits That's a really good point about AI possibly upturning class signifying professions!! I'm not good w any form of maths or economics but it'll be interesting to see how this will impact the cost of law services--like a contract that can be easily generated by AI will be cheaper than it currently is, but more complex and specialised services could become more expensive if the rise in AI results in fewer jobs in law (due to fewer tasks that need to be done by trained professionals). My roommate last year was doing part-time legal research for a law professor (they were comparing the laws of different countries on this one topic, but I can't remember what it was). That seems like work that would be at risk of being delegated to some extent to AI 🤔 I feel like medical diagnostic AI could be really good for marginalised groups that are usually dismissed by doctors--like how women's pain isn't taken seriously, and how certain symptoms manifest differently on people with darker skin tones (a fact which isn't always mentioned by or illustrated in medical textbooks and lectures). Re code, I've just got the silliest mental image of a little old lady on her rocking chair, just enjoying a wee bit of coding by the fireside lol. Idk much about coding--it seems like it needs to be very fine-tuned to be functional? Do you think an AI would be capable of generating functional and concise code all on its own, or would it always need to be overseen and edited by a software engineer?

@@sanpellegrinolimonata LOL the wee bit of coding by the fireside is an amazing image. it's hard to say what it will be capable of right now! i think it needs some babysitting currently, but honestly its abilities have increased so much in just the past year that it doesn't seem crazy that it will be able to make bigger architectural decisions AND implement them eventually. also that's such an interesting comment about diagnostic AI maybe helping marginalized groups! the downside is that biases can also be baked into these models if you feed them biased training data.. idk!!! we definitely live in an interesting time though lol

I read convenience stote woman a few years ago! It was such an interesting peek into Japanese culture for me. Her ability to take pride in being rhe perfect convenience store employee and just the things she valued - so different from American culture, for sure. I remember the ending leaving me feeling odd about it - the whole thing with the guy taking advantage of her and how that ends. I think she is autistic too. I did enjoy it - it was a nice little look into such a different life.

Also im doing the same thing with learning my knitting machine. I have a portable model from the 80s that folds down and its such a learning curve! I have a goal to use it to make a sweater this year, but who knows own if I will actually get that done. Now im thinking of making a linen t-shirt with it, but I feel like linen will be harder in general. I dont know. Its fun to play with, but definitely does feel more intimidating. Im so jealous of your machine though! You have all the attachments and everything - mine is just a knitting machine, so ribbing and lace and everything have to be hand manipulated, which also just feel so daunting.

that's so true about the cultural difference! it was definitely interesting how her friends were almost more comfortable seeing her be unhappy in a way they could understand, than happy in a way they couldn't understand. i think i liked that in the end she embraced who she is, considering her only discomfort with it originally was just other people's judgments of it!

@@showandtellmeg i probably would have been too overwhelmed to source all the different accessories myself, so i am SO lucky to have inherited them all from my friend!! but you can do some really fun and cute stuff even with just the basic single bed, that's all i'm working with right now anyway! i'd try swatching with the linen, i could picture that coming out really cute! i was pleasantly surprised with how the cotton came out since i was also figuring the tension would be more finicky than using something with more stretch. next up i'm thinking about a silk tank top
