The times, when you died to Tron and Blood Moon and Infect on turn 2 with no recourse? Honestly, people are weird. "Those times" weren't better than todays modern. And Path was never a good card - it was the only option.

@@testthewest123 Today's Modern is a static waist of time imo. Instead of being shaped by 22 years of Magic history, it's shaped by 2 sets, with very little hope for new cards/archetypes breaking through because those two sets were too strong. It's only hope is more premium priced products with even stronger expensive cards. No thank you.

I had a realization during m21 and og jumpstart where I had pulled I think my 2nd or 3rd Baneslayer Angel and actually thought “ah man, another one??”. At that same moment I realized how strange it was to be dissapointed to pull a Baneslayer Angel. That card was one of the iconic, powerful and valuable cards of its time. It’s a shame to see some of our favorites lose their places in the meta and also how they have even become somewhat forgotten. Love the episode!

I think the biggest reason Snapcaster sees less play now is how the removal suite of azorious/ UWX control has shifted. You can't flashback a leyline binding or a solitude, and the x-cost spells (prismatic ending/march of otherworldy light) while flexible, feel really bad with the snapcaster tax or are stuck at sorcery speed. In current modern Azorious control your efficient flashback target is basically just counterspell. Azorius decks also heavily shifted to incorporate chalice, which also pushed the deck off of 1-cost spells. If dimir control saw more play, then Snapcaster would be more prevalent. Dimir has a lot more viable targets: fatal push, hand disruption, drown in the loch, counterspell, as well as cantrips like consider/thought scour/opt. If we saw a meta shift towards u/b or U/B/X instead of U/W/X then Snap would see a pretty dramatic rise in value.

I think there is another point you missed on Snapcaster Mage. Casting Snapcaster to get back a piece of interaction, like a Lightning Bolt or some form of countermagic, was VERY important to the decks that played it. Considering the most used pieces of top tier interaction nowadays are creatures (the Evoke elementals), I think this might be the greatest factor as to why Snapcaster Mage is not as good. He doesn't work for the niche he mainly used to anymore.

From what I heard Tron is still really good against all the midrange decks. Main issues are the super fast decks and Urza Saga making colorless constructs. Tron's mass removal like Ugin's minus and All is dust can't touch em constructs, so its an uphill battle against the best land in the format. Funny how the forth Urza land is the one that does in Tron.

You guys were close to figuring out why Tron is bad. The reason relates to Eldrazi. That season was so dominant for colorless cards that WotC stopped making strong colorless cards altogether. OG Karn was good in comparison to its compatriots, but those Planeswalkers have been power crept away and we should be playing Karn 2.0 or even 3.0 by now. There just isn't one... and there are similar stories across every mana value slot in the deck.

  • @alwaysplaythegame

    @alwaysplaythegame

Issue with tron is so many other decks put out huge threats for super cheap without having to spend half their deck searching for a specific set of lands. Murktide drops a 5/5 or bigger flier for 2 mana while playing other good value/control/other threats.

My two modern decks that I've owned since the early days of the format are elves and infect. Both of which pretty much became unplayable when Modern Horizons was printed. I was hopeful when Rotpriest was printed, because it seems like that card could make infect playable again. But it seems like all the free removal spells are kinda rough for infect. I'm hoping Lord of the Rings will bring some powerful elves that might boost up the elves deck a bit, but we'll see what happens

About Wild Necatl : 1 mana 3/3 is fine, we're just at a point where the 3/3 needs to have upside now like lifelink or vigilance. A 1 drop 3/3 that draws on etb would be a pretty serious magic card for modern. I don't ever wanna see a 1 mana 4/4 lmao. Thoughtseize: Force of Negation and Solitude killed most glass cannon combos. And because every deck runs so much removal creature based combo desks are just unviable. So Thoughtseize is not as impactful but still has uses.

I think there are quite a lot misdiagnosis in this one. Snapcaster for example is mostly not seeing play anymore, because the gy is needed for other cards, not because a 2/1 isn't useful. And in many decks, instants got replaced by card like Fury/Solitude, which aren't snappable. Also, the free spells like Force of Negation/Vigor aren't good targets for Snapcaster as well. The change is also not, that games got faster - quite the opposite. But if answers and interaction is available, you can't expect free wins all the time and free win decks like Tron, Blood Moon decks and Combo get reduced in numbers. And in my book, that's a good thing.

I think people are mostly annoyed because of how rare the serialized cards are. There is only one Ragavan 1/500 in the world. But there are many foil phyrexian Elesh Norns and even masterpieces. SCG opening 20 masterpieces doesn't make it less likely that you'll also open one. But if they pull a serialized card then they removed that one from the lottery. To be clear though I don't think SCG did anything wrong. That's just an obvious thing that will happen. There's a good chance SCG or Card Kingdom get the 1/1 Ring too and people will rage if they do. One thing that I'd love to know is how many product they actually open and how many serialized cards total they got.

It's to early to claim in Magic, but there is a strong likelihood in sports cards that certain companies send 'loaded' packs to places that open cards on youtube for the publicity. As I believe was mentioned on a Goldfish podcast weeks ago, the 'fear' some companies have is that the 1/1 card is opened by some kind in a Target, gets scuffed to death on a sidewalk and never sees the light of day leading to the public screaming that Richard Garfield or Mark Rosewater has it locked away in a vault.

Remand was something combo decks were interested in, not control decks. It was just a way to buy you an extra turn and seeing an extra card. I think it's still a desirable effect in combo there just aren't many viable combo decks. Actually Fire Prophecy is probably more desirable than Remand now because Fire can answer Ragavan and DRC for good, not just temporarily.

I think Snapcaster and Cryptic could come back, but the big problem that plagues them is T3feri... I hate that card because it kills the "land-go" control so irreparably. Cryptic at the top end is more or less essintial for snapcaster to be good. Another factor that hurts snapcaster badly is how the best removal spells now are creatures (solitude and fury) rather than instants or sorceries. If t3feri ever gets banned (which is hard, it doesn't feel oppressive, but it severely warps the control metagame) snapcaster-cryptic will have a good chance of seeing a reasonable amount of play again, if t3feri gets banned and we get a swords to plowshares equivalent, then snapcaster will return to being a top staple.

You no longer die to turn 3 combos because you have prismatic ending, leyline binding, solitude, fury, unholy heat and boseiju. I'm pretty sure modern is slower and way more grindy than it used to be. I'm not defending new modern lol, I kinda prefered it before tbh. I'm just saying it really doesn't feel that fast. Mox Opal and Simian Spirit Guide. Turn 1 faithless looting into triple Hollow Ones or Prized Amalgams, now that was fast.

I think the turns thing is counted on how fast can the fastest deck win when they're not being interacted. It's the same how "old" modem was a "turn 4" format where snapcaster beats backed by a celestial colonade was a legit win condition.

Okay, so I need to address the point at 49:55, can you really say that thoughtseize is the 26th card when literally half of the list is sideboard cards? Like I counted, quite literally half of those cards are sideboard cards only, meaning thoughtseize is really the 10th to 12th most played card, yeah it's a far cry from being in the top 3, but it's not as bad as it seems at first blush.

I think you tell no one about the ring if you open it, like winning the lottery and also making people crave the ring more so you can sell it for more

My prediction is that in the first week there will be reports of at least 10 of "the one" ring being "opened". And the real one will never be found (officially).

I'm going to buy collector boxes of LOTR, and in the incredibly rare chance I pull the 1 of ring, I'm immediately making a KZread video, tossing it in a toilet, and taking a piss on it. I so want to ruin it for y'all. And let's be real, it'd get a ton of views.

If I open the one ring... No chance I release it... I'd buy as much stock of LOTR CE boxes and wait til the product dries up and goes up to 500+ per box... Capitalize for as long as I can .. and sell for 1m in 10 years. By far the rarest card ever made in mtg other then the one of one special cards from winning world championships

I mean, how much "faster" can modern get? When will they start printing more 0 mana cost bombs and Evoke-like and Suspend effects that allow you to play without any negative effects? They may turn this game into Yugioh spastic combo fest if they are not careful. So far, the mana system is preventing that.

Cryptic command Path to exile Tarmogoyf Snappy Bob Lili Deaths shadow Tron Titan And most format staples pre-MH2. Now you got UR murktide Rhinos Archon Hammer time And that's your playable decks, everything else is far below these decks in power level. The format is absolutely awful, probably the worst it's ever been, barring the Eldrazi/hogaak metas.

Modern Horizon is a total disaster. Because of how pushed cards are in MH1 and MH2, MH3 needs to surpass it power creep wise otherwise it will be a failure and not sell as much. So the set can only break and warp modern constantly. Each MH release will spawn new tier 1 decks and render lots of decks unplayable. They just made modern an extremely expensive rotating format.

@@vulcanh254 MH1 was actually perfect imo (barring gaak) it powered up the format, but left it's identity intact. MH2 is the sole problem imo. Everything has become so damned homogenized because of it.

printing directly to eternal formats is killing the game through pure greed. you basically said every modern staple before MH is bad now. the new remand is a upgrade. it doesnt counter which means it gets around caverns
