A new Podcast series in the heap of Podcasts on the internet. My intentions to do this is to recreate those hours from my college days when I used to sit with my professors for an hour or two and discuss topics that would move from one to the other quite fluidly.
Anupama Chopra is an Indian author, journalist, film critic and director of the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. She is also the founder and editor of the digital platform Film Companion which offers a curated look at cinema.
Smriti Kiran is a journalist, creative producer and author with over two decades of experience in the television and film industry. At present Smriti serves as the Artistic Director of the Mumbai Film Festival, where she is committed to help build the festival into a cutting-edge entity.
Hope you enjoy it!

    The fact is that even with foreign films, our regional films are also getting some recognition from it to further & mainstream industry. MAMI became a spotlight holder for indie film makers who can get a great help from them.

    As for political movies, I love whatever little Anupama and Smriti are trying to do but in our film industry it's just not enough. Rather shit movies glorifying caste, misguided nationalism and feudalism are made, latest trailer being Tanhaji (or whatever the name is I don't remember). The reason why "movie" people are not political is because they are not well read. Britishers had this theory of infiltration where they believed that if they would teach the elites English and their way of living it would infiltrate down the hierarchy, which is absolutely true. So it is important for our elite society to be more and more political and suggest ideas that would make the ideas more acceptable down the hierarchy. As for learning you don't have to do much just read some class 11 and 12 NCERTs., which is enough... And read few political thinkers, and basic economics from school.. Please give some exposure to documentary filmmakers like Anand Patwardhan. I know people will start yelling leftists, leftists, etc again because they are not well read. Any policy, idea, or "strong decision" (as they say) is good ONLY IF it helps raising the living standards of people, otherwise it's just a political stunt, like de-operationalisation of Article 370

    I mean I am all for local stories if represented well enough, there is a resurgence lately in that genre and am sure some good stories will come out on top. There is certain pride in being a part of the community for example being maratha or an indian etc you can't take away that from people. As for elite society you say, they too have many misguided opinions, that's classic fallacy to authority

  • @NileshKumar-nr2vj

    Yeah, the last time "Rajputs" were entitled to their pride they were vandalising theatres and announcing bounty on Deepika Padukone. I have lived in village so I know very closely what this pride mean.. There are 35 to 40 honor killings each month.. Can you believe that..? The problem is the feeling of superiority attached to it.. Which is the character of feudalism still EXTREMELY prevalent in India, those who don't know haven't stepped out of their homes.. India is semi industrialized Nation just like Europe in 19th and mid 20th century. And feudalism was just the same in Europe back then as it in India right now.. I live in university hostel and the number of stories regarding the "pride" you are talking about is ENDLESS. Having to deal with it every single day it makes you perpetually sad and hopeless...You can still tell those stories without being casteist and glorifying caste

    Misguided opinion is only result of less knowledge. That's what I am saying, read more. But elites are actually less vulnerable to that phenomenon than people those do not even have information at all... And in today's world of information technology explosion, people are inundated with RAW information, that they don't know how to process... Which is dangerous,...

    removing article 370 is not a political stunt. It should have been done years ago.That article apart from being misogynist, bigoted and homophobic incentivised separatism. Now as far standard of living is concerned, did our standard of living rise after we got independence.Rather 1950s were our worst years. We took our time, so will kashmir but eventually india and the world(except for terrorist nations like Pakistan and Palestine) will get better.

  • @NileshKumar-nr2vj

    @NileshKumar-nr2vj

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Siddhart Dutta.. What you are calling misogynistic is not article 370 it's article 35A upon which supreme court was already hearing before this happened. "Bigoted" I don't know where you're coming from. "Homophobic" I think what you are talking about is IPC 377 that has got nothing to do with Article 370 but anyway J and K had its own penal codes, which of course needed scrutiny just like IPC, which also took more than 150 years to rectify something made in colonial times.. But let me hypothetically admit that all these things are right and were horrible, does that mean you go on and reduce a state to a union territory ?? Are you going to do that with other states as well if their policies are misogynistic, homophobic or bigoted ? These are the ways in which govt wants you to believe in what they are doing is logical instead it's manipulation. To understand you just have to ask right question.. Like the one I wrote above. So why is this a political stunt ? In order to explain that well, I'd have to write A LOT, that I am not willing to do right now,. I have things on my mind... Last how exactly do you think it would stop separatist movement in Kashmir??Do you know since 2014 more Army men have been killed, less terrorists killed and there is rise in radical militant attack..?? What exactly has changed after this decision ?? J and K already had 260 Articles of Indian Constitution applied there and for the rest they do have their parallels in their construction. Do you how many times did president rule was imposed on Kashmir ?? So it has been acting as a central govt agency for the longest time.. Do you know how Congress ricked many elections there ?? Do you know USA has 50 Constitution and 50 flags ?? I am curious to hear from you what exactly would change after this and how ?? Yes, Pakistan induced terrorism and separatism is a problem and even radical Islamic ideas like Jihad is too a problem, but that's just a part of a state's problem which has cultivated over 300 years, at least... And the way this govt is dealing with this is worse even Congress was doing better... Only PM who was doing good regarding this particular issue was Ataj Bihari and to some extent Narsimha Rao

    Actions speak louder than words. I don’t think we have to meet her to know what her motives are. I used to admire her a lot but of late, her actions have been in stark contrast to whatever she claims to stand for. I understand that she runs an independent channel and website so I don’t blame her for sometimes giving certain people a platform. We all go where the money is. Having said that, when you give the same bunch of untalented fools a chance over and over again. It does put your credibility into question. Also, given her standing in the industry as the spouse of VVC and as a veteran film journalist. I would imagine that she would distance herself from people in the industry who are well-connected but not very bright or talented. Instead, she gives them a platform almost immediately while talented outsiders have to wait years to be seen worthy to sit across from her. I find that very problematic. I also expect her to be unbiased which can be very tricky to judge because taste is subjective but I don’t think, I am the only one who has noticed, how quick she is to shred a non YRF or Dharma film into pieces while she hails even the most mediocre films from the said banners, very highly. As a former fan, I genuinely want her to do better but let’s be clear, this constant backlash that she receives isn’t a result of just different opinions. Something like this occurs when you stress on having a moral high ground and then you fail to deliver yourself.
