Pocket BBQ and Sirloin Steak in the woods

A BBQ that fits in your pocket!?! apparently it exists, I test it out by cooking up a sirloin steak out in the woods.

    I got a grill like that for Christmas last year and I have to say it's a surprisingly nice piece of gear. Weighs a little bit, but doesn't take up much space. Assembled in a couple of minutes and does it's job perfectly well. Add a piece of aluminium foil and it's a perfect companion when you're going fishing.

    Used steamers for this before.. Sometimes they flatten if youre trying to use it more like a bowl. It warms up and pops open. An easy fix is 2-4 pieces of bailing wire. unfold bowl to desired shape, where some holes line up, and drop a u shaped wire through it. One will work but 2-4 makes it tough. It really helps if there is wind.

    I steam broccoli in that particular type of "Fire-bowl" you used here,lol.I never thought to use it for building a safe fire platform.We either can have camp fires or we can't in British Columbia. If there's a lot of wildfires burning [we have always had forest fires] they just put a straight up ban on for any fires,even in your own yard.Sometimes they even barricade entry into areas near fires or potential fires so camping is out.Of course this always happens during late summer and early fall,the best time to be in the bush for fishing and later on for hunting.That grill looked really interesting too.Cheers.

    Kent Survival haha I think dry is an understatement.. we just had the biggest fire in California history! I think it’s still burning I’m not sure lol. But yeah fire dangers and fire bands are always in effect in almost all areas. Of course there’s parks and forest areas where you can start a fire to grill or camp but very selective.

    Cool little grill, I have yet to find one that's light enough to justify carrying when I'm going backpacking but it looks handy enough for a shorter outing. I have a cheap but decent bow-saw that folds down to a similar sized tube by the way. I wonder how many other tube shaped camping items are out there. Would be kind of funny to just pack a bag of tubes when going out on a trip, lol

    @storm3016

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, the Coghlan was the first one I looked in to, but it's between 350 and 400 gram if I remember correctly, & that's just too heavy for what it is (I would rather carry a bigger saw or hatchet instead of the grill if I had that much weight to spare). I like the one Joe uses though, didn't know he sells them too. I'll have to look in to that one, thanks for the tip!

    just learned about the UCO - a couple of tweaks and China slips past the patent goalie. And of course cheapen up the metal I would assume.

    Thanks, I just got gifted the UCO version, to be honest, the build doesn't feel any better but it is heavier for some reason, may have to do a comparison though they are VERY similar. Thanks for watching

    Hello again Andy. There was food involved, so you know i'm bound to comment.Good presentation, but i don't see a bright future for the product. Let me explain why, and any other subscribers, please give your views on my view. It would appear to be made for the light weight backpackers market? The only trouble is, lightweight back packers are unlikely to have a BBQ. mainly cos you cant get light weight burgers, steaks, cheese or buns. OK, buns are light, but hard to pack out for long distances. So for me, its a bit of an interesting gadget, a very clever and well thought out design. but with limited practical usage. And as for the price? thats one more thing to put me off. personally i'd rather spend far less on a BBQ meat holder, it probably weighs more, and doesn't pack down like the pocket BBQ. But you could quite easily hang one off the back of your pack without to much trouble, and you could removed the top layer of a meat holder, and effectively hold it like a frying pan over a small fire. so as they say in 'dragons den' "i'm out im afraid". Still love ya channel mate. Gary

    Just realised, i didn't mention the fire bow, that could be very useful for a one man small fire, maybe in a place where your not meant to have fire. you could protect the ground with some logs, or dig it into the earth.

    Hi mate, you're not wrong, there are lighter (such as the Coleman folding) and light weight hikers usually don't have fire etc but I think its got a niche, also, could be ok for 'bug out / emergency bags' etc. I guess over time Ill see if I take it out with me haha, cheers for watching.

    I find that item hard to fault given its price/weight though i do like the folding bbq grill/stand that Scottish Wanderer uses. Ok it may not stand up to its purpose after many uses regarding its cheapness but its a nicely thought out item imo.

    If i may reply again, i understand the initial reply but its lighter than a pan for example i am sure. Its not of course for soloist (sp) cooking in extremes but it is an option given its weight if fortune shines.

    its actually not that much lighter than a pan, not if you use a titanium plate as a pan. see 'jack outdoors' life venture titanium plate vid. and you can cook a lot more on a pan, all BBQ stuff, plus onions, and fry an egg the next morning for breakfast. like i said, i'm impressed with the idea, just not sure how many they will sell. i try and go as pan free as possible for a one nighter, wrap it in tin foil and bung it in the fire if you can, thats my motto.
