Hello brother firefighters in Sochi. Lot of heat in that apartment fire. Deep char in all the woodwork and closets. Hope no one was injured. Some things we do a bit different in the USA is we have police shut down traffic both directions and they also keep civilians and occupants away from the scene. For their safety and ours. We don't want them in the way of operations or get hurt by our equipment or run back into the fire scene. Looks like you made an excellent fire attack and extinguishment. Keep up the good work of protecting citizens and property. Stay safe!

Hello brother! No casualties. Our police also blocks traffic if necessary (if there is a threat to the lives of citizens), there was no threat at this fire and this is the central street of the city of Sochi, if it is blocked, there will be large traffic jams on the roads. We also take care of safety at work. In case of large fires, the police help us, they do not allow citizens to the place of the fire. Thanks for your support and wishes!

I watched several videos of American firefighters working. Our extinguishing and fire fighting tactics are very different. I would like to learn from your experience. I was especially surprised how your firefighters carry out smoke removal from private houses, they go up to the roof and make a cut in them, this is very dangerous in my opinion

In the USA and Canada that's called " vertical ventilation " and coupled with a positive pressure fan at a doorway is supposed to remove smoke and heat. I never liked doing that for many reasons. You can use a tool to "sound" the roof to see how strong it is, but you really can't tell what rafters may have been weakened. Modern building today uses a prefabricated truss system with fairly thin wood beams held together by gusset plates. Those fail under moderate heat quickly. Cutting open a gabled roof creates additional hazards especially at night or in heavy smoke conditions. The opening needs to be large enough to relieve the pressure but you need a long pole to push down into the opening to open up ceilings. I always felt that just causes additional unnecessary damage and puts the firefighters on the roof at greater peril. Some of our people here look at it as a way to show off how tough and capable they are to the others I generally believed by opening windows and doors, using a fan and nozzle control you can push the heat and smoke out without ruining roofs and ceilings. You are correct, it is very dangerous. In my long 48 year career, ( I'm now retired for 3 years) I may have done two or three roof ventilations. Never liked it and wanted to get it done quickly. If we used the fast attacks that are used in Europe and Russia, is much more effective than the way it's done here. We have so many rules and standards to follow, almost don't have the time to attack the fire. Our hose is stacked and pulled off our trucks and need to be straightened and moved around, plus a water supply made up, then incident command takes over and runs the show. Here fire attacks are generally slow and methodical, using lots of manpower and water. I've watched a lot of Russian, British, Dutch and other countries and marvel how well everything works. I wish American departments would see how well one engine with 5 men aboard resolves the situation. The Dutch are really well prepared with the initial foam attacks. But everyone I watch do quite well with fire attack. For a house fire here in the city where I'm at, we will send 3-5 engines, 1 or 2 truck/aerial trucks, couple of chiefs and various other vehicles. You'll see one engine pumping and one truck company being used and all the others parked with engines idling and all our pretty flashing lights going full blast. Only on super big fires will you see more than one engine pumping and hose stretched. It's a wild scene. One thing I've noticed of Russian and European departments, is how you have the nozzle and hose off to another firefighter. It gets passed on to those who can use it more effectively. In the USA, a firefighter won't give up the nozzle unless he's forced to. It's a sign of " toughness" to handle the nozzle as they put out the fire, smoke up and discolor helmets and gear to show everyone how much a firefighter they are. Really kind of stupid. Hope I answered your questions. Feel free to ask and if I know the answer I will happily reply.
