Some of the commenters here who says that PM Lee is calling all oppisition voters are “free riders” clearly did not watch finish the whole clip or is clearly blinded. PM Lee clearly stated that ppl should vote for the party whom they believe that they can do a good job for them. Not jump on some “I need an opposition bandwagon and knowing that the PAP has done a decent job. That’s morally wrong and we should not promote such a mindset and culture.

Firstly, the GRC was introduced by a leader every Singaporean adore. Me LKY. Yet they criticise his policies. The irony... Second, give our majority Chinese population, without the GRC system do u believe that new MPs who are non-Chinese will be able to get elected? I certainly doubt so. Mr Singh would not have been here tdy.

Given our majority Chinese population, Aljunied GRC still elected a WP team with 3 minorities. One of the most, and some say the most popular PAP politician, Tharman, would probably face little to no problem with re-election. Does the GRC system need to have 5-6 man teams leading to the "free rider" claims some make against PAP newcomers? Honestly speaking, they can just return to having 3-4 person GRCs and put this to rest.

Also if you think that every Singaporean worships LKY, I can make a guess that you're one of the old timers. If I'm wrong then you are brainwashed. The new generation questions what is being done to get the result rather than celebrate what is given to them, hence we are called "Free Riders".

Cannot fully understand why the PM is always so insecure and must treat the opposition as enemies of the state and call those who voted for the opposition as free riders. Can't the PAP be more gracious and accept the wishes of the voters?

Honestly disappointed with LHL being so sour grapes about the fact that oppositions have won 2 constituencies. I think too much emphasis was placed on the "free-rider" term that PM mentioned. The "free-rider" term was simply DESCRIBING the voting process where a select few who voted against what they truly wanted. It can be detrimental to ANY party, be it PAP or WP. Those who are offended have probably taken it out of context.

As a listener I observed that PM Lee quickly went to clarify and change his term of free rider after Pritam Singh called him out on it for using such a term on residents form Aljunied and Sengkang. So obvious like Abesan who obviously treat his health seriously than hold power, PM must take a overdue breather to resolve his glaring sweaty problem otherwise don a wind breaker to conceal his abnormality. PM Lee, to correct you, I would say voting in more opposition is indeed an outcome singaporeans would want to have, so that more robust debate about policies, and less of blank cheques. As for whether the opposition can form an alternate government or a shadow cabinet at this point in time, I think all of us do not need you to state us the obvious. Maybe in future elections and when u have 50 percent of the members of parliament being opposition MPs, then we would like to hear what you have to say and appraise of the situation then.

“Free riders” are generals or Temasek CEOs becoming MPs

As an American in Singapore i had no idea government could work so well. I get why many feel you need an opposition but be mindful of all that entails. My country is deeply divided because of the two parties. It seems like it would be a positive and each party would try and out do each other and make the country better. Quite the opposite happens and they end trying to damage each other. What the PM is saying is true. If you vote opposition when you actually want PAP to stay in power is not right. You should reward your leadership as they truly are the best I have ever seen. Just my thoughts

Great showing on the part of both LO Pritam Singh and PM Lee Hsien Loong. If this is the rigour and poise of the debates in parliament in the future, I think Singapore can really benefit from it.

I look at Mr. Loong and I see a man who is better than me. We should ALL aspire to his integrity, his intelligence and his compassion.

I agree with PM about voting sincerely but saying those who voted for ALTERNATIVE Parties are "free-riders" who voted based on WP's campaign direction is wrong, imo. If you realistically look at the % of votes won by even PSP (first-time party), it tells a diff story? Regarding morals, whose morals based on whose standard? Does that mean that PAP's campaign strategy has ALWAYS been moral? I think words like "free-riders" and "immoral" in this case is hard to justify. Sincerity is key, and btw, shedding some tears does not equate sincerity.

PM's definition of free-rider is not what u understand that term to mean simplistically. nothing wrong with voting opposition. PM is calling out those who vote for opposition BUT who actually want a PAP MP running the show in their constituency. Now THAT is a free rider because this person is free riding on OTHERS' genuine voting. It means this person casted a false vote and that also is PM's narrow definition of "immoral" in this sense, when you vote against what you believe in. If enough people adopt this mindset then one fine day you might just win the wrong lottery.

It was clear as sky what he meant, you are the one who are taking things out of context. Plus, no one is defending Pritam - they are commenting on what PM Lee said about "free riders". It would have been the same reaction even if the person on the other side was not Pritam but a PAP MP. It would have been the same if Pritam didnt choose to reply or comment to PM Lee's speech. There could have been no one who bothered to reply to PM Lee's speech but you will still have gotten the same reaction on this "free rider".

@@logicrule let me explain to you, how calling WP "free riders" is backfiring on the PAP. But before that, I have to explain to you the correct definition of a free rider. A free rider problem arises when a user taking advantage of a public good available for everyone to consume. Here is why LHL is wrong. It is not right to say PAP is a public good that WP is leveraging on to appeal to the voters. By saying that, they themselves are also free riders in opposition wards. Their campaign in Aljunied GRC was "Bring Us Home". Ownself shoot ownself. PS's campaign was to deny PAP of a blank check. That should be how a democracy works. Calling WP free riders is like the chicken rice store uncle calling the drink store uncle beside him a "free rider" cuz his chicken rice got MSG and make the people thirsty and hence the drink store uncle profit from chicken rice uncle. Tio bo? Correct wording coming out of PM Lee's mouth should be: WP complements the PAP in a true democracy. By using the sharp language, PM Lee is the butthurt one here. Throughout the whole debate, if you have a good eye, you could see that PM Lee was using very sharp and negative language on PS, while PS was being very neutral.

The PM just insulted the large number of people who voted for the opposition. Treating them as ignorance and cowards .... what’s the point of educating the people but just want them to be followers? It makes no sense, we vote for the opposition because we love our country and wants it to really move forward.

I think too much emphasis was placed on the "free-rider" term that PM mentioned. The "free-rider" term was simply DESCRIBING the voting process where a select few who voted against what they truly wanted. It can be detrimental to ANY party, be it PAP or WP. Those who are offended has taken it out of context.

To be honest, yes Some of the Singaporean’s do not hold a good judgement. They vote knowing that the PAP is doing a decent job. However, they jumped on the bandwagon of wanting an opposition. I firmly and fairly believe that people should vote for the party they think will do the best job. Give credit when it’s due. Be fair. Should everyone have that mindset of being a free rider, that’s morally wrong. And Mr Singh should not advocate that.

Not their judgement at fault. I wouldn't blame them for what they did as they were driven by frustration against an unfair system.

Uncalled speculation by LHL when he said "what will happen to S'pore?" This seem to be the age old assumption that only the PM and the PAP care about Spore and have the intelligence to govern. Pritam has every capability to be a PM. Singaporeans have always been ready for a Non-Chinese PM. When our independence was given, YBI was the president. No one said that we are not ready for independence when our president is a Malay so give us a Chinese president and then give us independence. Its dumb and plain racist to say such statements after 50 plus years of multi-racial harmony. It has certainly backfired for the ruling party.

Yes, if u watch the whole video, u will understand that PM Lee clarified that it’s people who wants PAP has the gov, but got brainwashed into the “I need an opposition gov” bandwagon. That’s morally wrong to be fair and Mr Singh should not promote such a culture. People should not vote opposition cos there is a need to have one. If the opposition is not of quality, do we still vote them in? Cannot be right. We should encourage ppl to vote for the party that they deep down BELIEVE will best serve their needs and PM Lee has clearly clarified that. Mr Singh should prove his party capability by sharing new ideas instead of brainwashing people of needing an opposition. Get the votes based on true capability, isn’t that the best for Singapore?

I daresay ALL Singaporeans want what's best for Singapore. And based on PAP's performance in the past years, some have realised that PAP is not attracting the top talents. Worse, they seem to come from the same mould. The Opposition parties, however, have managed to attract high calibre and interesting members like Pritam Singh, Jamus, Paul Tambyah, etc. They are Singaporeans who are willing to step up for the country. They cld easily just be 'freeriders". So, gotta give such courageous Singaporeans a chance to contribute to the country. The ruling party shld try to be thankful for more brain power to strategise for the future of Singapore. In 2025, voters will vote out the inferior candidates. In the meantime, let's just all work together to tackle the challenges at hand rather than still harping on voting for the opposition.

@@xcavorgreen187 ur the one who should read or listen again Mr Lee said in his speech that the WP had campaigned on this platform, before citing an anecdote told to him by Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean, who said a resident was “perturbed” because her friends told her it was fine to vote for the opposition because the "the Government would still be in charge". “If you say vote against the Government because somebody else will look after getting the PAP Government and you just become a free rider, and you vote opposition, no harm, the PAP will still be there, then I think the system must fail," Mr Lee said in his speech. "Her friends" are definitely no opposition and normal voters. He said the WP used this as a campaigning tool, true, but definitely the free riders were referring to the voters and not the opposition.

We not only need leaders like Pritam Singh we need transparencies from every quarters be it opposition or ruling government. We can only achieve this by amending or discard laws preventing freedom of speech.

To PM Mr Lee, I totally agree with your speech and rationales you have given due to certain sensitivity/confidential details, but my vote still goes to the Opposition. Why? Not because I know PAP going to win the elections anyway and PAP to carry on to do the job, so I could enjoy the "free ridership" you mentioned. It's because it's not just about you. You and your team consist of many members. How assure are you, today, all team members have the same mindset, same idealogy, same mentality as you? You are just ONE out of a number of it. Voting for Oppositon in so as to have a 3rd party, an alternative voices and sights to make sure the Govt is doing things right. Of course, if the Opposition is not doing the right things and PAP is in the right shape, they will be voted out. Winning 60% over votes, but gaining over 90% seats in the Parliment, you have the biggest shoutout. So hope you shall stop fretting over this. Let's work things out together. I have depend on myself to survive in this harsh reality under the system you and your party created. Hence, I don't agree on the "free ridership" quote. Opposition is there to provide alternative views, voice and also to assist in overseeing that we are all in the right track..... To be fair and square, if the Oppositon are strong and capable enough to overtake the current Govt, they too will have to show their capabilities. Fair competition. You promoted this, ain't it?

It was notable that Mr Singh raised his hand to request for permission to speak but Why did PM Lee didn’t respect the protocol by waiting for the Speaker of Parliament to grant permission for him to speak? PM Lee didn’t even wait to be called n permitted to take the stand. He just stood up and bulldozed his way towards the microphone before SoP could opened his mouth. I find it very difficult to trust PAP who over rides the Speaker of Parliament?

In a company, policies and processes are put in place for effective governance, same goes for a country. The system can work the way it is working but it will definitely take time for opposition to be familiarised. If the "orientation" or "onboarding" process are not given, then it is clear that the intent is for the opposition to fail. Then the country will fail as a whole. In a company you can't just recruit only those with the like-mindedness, there is always a tendency to have different groups, so do we call them "free-riders"?

Pritam's speech is inspirational. LHL and his free rider speech is petty and insulting to Singaporeans and shows that in spite of his earlier responses to the election results when he came across as humbled, there is no genuine desire to change.

Singapore is a world class and first world country due to prudent and forward-looking social and economic management.

Level of this discussion is so high it is refreshing to see. It is unthinkable in most other countries.

Mm, why does PM Lee keep coming back to the point of free riders? Pritam Singh has firmly rejected that assertion and stood by his voters who voted because they wanted an alternative voice, which goes to show their desire to 1) support a democratic framework 2) sees the benefits of that. By harping on that argument of free ridership, you seem to be casting a shadow over those who vote seriously for the workers party that won them a GRC like Sengkang. The reason it made history is because as Pritam said, our framework hasnt been very aligned democratically for all these years! So why the thought that the votes that put Sengkang GRC on the opposition line is a matter of free ridership and not a matter of conviction and heart?

They will also form your government if most of the competent people are from the same party. 2. It is NOT a problem of free rider problem. I believe Pritam's campaign was to deny PAP of a blank check. It is a wrong use of the economic term "free rider". Free riders make use of public goods available to benefit themselves. Both PAP and opposition MPs are competing for the same type of public goods, aka. our votes. You could also flip the table and say that in Aljunied, Hougang wards, the PAP's slogan was Bring Us Home. The PAP is not the public good. WE, the people are the "public good" in this scenario. They themselves are also trying to hop on to buy our votes. Hence, they themselves are also free riders.
