Plymouth Prowler - History, Major Flaws, & Why It Got Cancelled (1997-2002) - FLAWLESS?

In this video we are looking at the Plymouth/Chrysler Prowler! This was a quirky 2-door roadster that became a novelty car loved by its owners. While it wasn't very practical, you can't deny it was interesting and unique. The Prowler was only around for 5 model years before being cancelled. I also go over 5 major flaws and reasons that I felt caused this car to be discontinued. Watch along for a full history of this car from concept in 1993 to its cancellation in 2002!

The 1997 Prowler was a fun project to work on in the late 90s. I worked for a Tier 1 supplier that produced the lights for the vehicle (Company name at the time was Lescoa in Grand Rapids, MI). It was one of the first projects I did in automotive engineering. I was responsible for every exterior light except the headlight (turn signal/back up indicator, side marker, tail/brake light, CHMSL (center high mount stop light), and license plate lights). The headlight was built by Lescoa as well, but a different engineer was leading that project because of the complexity. Those projector beam lenses are heavy, and we needed a casting to hold them and take the heat that the bulbs produced. I still smile whenever I see one of those cars on the road.

In the late 90's I went to a plumbing service call for a woman for a minor repair. When she opened the garage door there was a Prowler inside, I asked her if she would give me a short ride when I was done. She obliged, it was a fun experience and the car felt peppy. I'm glad I asked!

I bought my 1999 Prowler last month here in Phoenix and LOVE it. Found it on Craigslist and it only had 5700 miles on it, paid $26,500 for it. I first saw the Prowler at the Minneapolis Auto Show in 1993 as a concept car and never thought it would ever go into production. I'm now 68 yrs old and finally able to afford one. I drive it 'every day'!!! And always make sure it's super clean before I pull it out of my garage. My wife LOVES it too, and all my neighbors compliment on the sound.

Yeah but dodge didn't have an aluminum v8 in the parts bin in 97. The 4.7 didn't get going till 2001. An Jeep was still useing the 4.0L straight 6. A viper v10 woulda been overkill. Guess a built 360 woulda been cool but heavy. Maybe bringing the 340 setup back woulda added a little more nostalgia.a turboed 2.4 srt-4 could been fun. Think the real problem was the 40 thousand dollar price tag. 97 was the first year for the ls in a Corvette with a 30 thousand sticker.

I have a 99 Prowler in Red and currently has only 23,000 miles, used mostly in the Spring and Summer, when I take it out boy does it get a lot of attention, from young kids to the older generation. There has been many times when other motorists get right beside me and rev up their engines hoping a race will ensue but I just have fun with it. Another really interesting thing other motorists do is get along side you just slightly and I know exactly what is happening, it is that they are perfectly positioned to view the Prowler at the perfect angle from the side. They tend to drive beside me for a good while until they have had enough, finally they will pass and while doing so their necks turn to the right to view the front part of the car, a smile is always present or a thumbs up. I could see the motorist perfectly through my outside rear view mirror as they look at the car and the view of the suspension. A beautiful car it is indeed, the power is plentiful I would say and I don’t need more than it has. I purchased some Continental Tires and the ride is much more enjoyable now. All in all, I love the Prowler.

Thanks for the nice video:.I have an 02 Inca Gold and my registration says it weighs 2,200 lbs, and it has 289 horsepower. Maybe it's just mine. I've had the car for about 7 years now and never had any trouble with it. This is my favorite all time car. I'm 6.3 and added a drivers seat lowering kit from "The Prowler Store" to mine. The factory had the drivers seat up on a box for no apparent reason other than to raise up short people, as it doesn't have a power seat to do it. The kit, just took out the box and lowered the drivers seat to match the passenger seat and it bolted right in. That fixed the headroom problems. Still a pain to get in and out of because the doors don't open far enough. However, my car is worth much more than I paid for it so I never installed Lambo door hinges on it. You have to butcher the car to do that, which kills the value. Even though I added over 15,000 dollars in chrome on it, it's all removable and no holes were drilled. You can see it here: facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1603817496302939&type=3

He worked at the nearby Chrysler dealership (service department maybe?) and even had one of them delivered right to his house so that it would have as close to zero miles as possible. The other he drove pretty regularly. The “brand new” car was always in the garage covered up. When he moved they rolled the “new” Prowler onto a trailer again. Wonder where that car is now? I had always known that the Prowler was the worst selling car in American auto history, but never knew it was specially meant for research. The one big thing that disappointed most people was the performance, with it have a V6. I definitely do see that the Prowler is a car just for cruising and having fun, esp with the interior and trunk space. Select areas of the chassis and exterior seem to show quality and safety issues.

That Being Said Remember That This Is A 2000lb Car So It Is Accelerating At A Fast Rate. Now With The Indy Style Suspension And The Front And Rear Weight racial The Posted Curve Speed Is Just A Suggestion (Baring Any Tar Snakes Or Uneven Road Surface) You Can Easly Take That Curve At Twice The Suggested Speed ( It's A Real Rush ) The Exhaust Sound Is Not Your Run Of The Mill Sound No It Will Not Sound Like A V8 But Respectable. I never saw one at less than $49,999 and it was a new prior year model . The dealer had it roped off like a World of Wheels show car. If you wanted to drive it, all you had to do was buy it first. 14:26 All HUGE due respect to Tom Gale (who shudda succeeded Lee Iaccoca!!!!!!!!!!) There is no way the Prowler would've been as good with a V8..the 5.9L Magnum was Mopars top V8 at the time with similar hp as the 3.5L V6..which at the time was THE highest hp mass production V6 on earth. A high hp (It was then..2000 is NOT 2020...soooo not fair to the car..trolls spoke of the car negatively..but who cares what they say?) V6 was the total plan for the car and..years ahead of it's time there, as well as the extensive use of aluminum.

As a kid growing up it looked like a batman villain or 50's organized crime boss vehicle got hot rodded then decided last second it wanted to be in f1, trained fot a week and gave up its racing career when the government told him his front wing had to be a bumper. Special place in my heart this car. Pure nostalgia and wonder for me. Love it, despite the gearbox. I would love that black tie version to match my daily driver charger with the same colors.

I actually thought this was an incredible vehicle. People who complained about the performance were missing the point. The point was to create an eye catching vehicle that could be lived with on the road. It was never meant to have neck snapping performance. It wasn't Plymouth's or later Chrysler's answer to the Viper. It didn't have such narly performance as to be dangerous in inexperienced hands. It was of course designed to attract attention. Mid 14 second quarter mile times weren't all that bad either. That's about where most 60's and 70's performance cars fell, without good tires, decent fuel mileage or creature comforts. As I said, not really that bad.

This aluminium experiment went sort of like this: as soon as the car manufacturers found out that the aluminum bodies don't rust, they stop making them. Why would you want to build something that could possibly kill your sales because it don't rust out? Btw, Ford did the same thing.

Alot of people down it because of the V6 what they do not realize is the v6 made great power when compared to how much the car weighted.Power to weight ratio was performance but what killed the real performance was the gearing plymouth should have put a performance transmission with the v6 instead they used a regular trans found in every family sedan. The front end design is also why they went with the v6 it fits in easier.

I have an 02 and you have the paint numbers wrong. Your chart was the early before model year chart. Meanwhile, Chrysler was racing to develop a dual color pearl paint, and they perfected it during the Prowler run. There weren't 300 Red pearl cars there were 600 and only 289 Inca Golds to balance production. I know, I have one. The problem with the Red, is in the Sun, it's orange, making it look like a Hot Wheels car. Fine if you like that, but it makes it look like a toy. The Inca Gold glows gold giving it a richer look. And that's what I like. The black or Navy show all the dust and are really hot in the bright Summer. (I've had one black car in my life; never again) I wanted a light color that looked rich. Also, the reason it rode so rough is because it had run flat tires. I put Continental Extreme Contacts on it and it was like night and day. (you can't even buy the original Good Year Eagles for it anymore) Still, there are some really bad streets around here I won't take it down. So, to make up for the standard sidewalls, I put a Continental blow out kit in the trunk like all the exotics have. And to the wishers down below; it's worth double what I paid for it. My very own street legal Hot Wheels car. Yeah it's kewl. Really nice video, thanks! Incidentally; Chrysler didn't make this car. It was made by Mercedes and hand made by Chrysler at their skunk works in Detroit. Just like the brand new Viper. They were supposed to be a set for 100 grand. Viper stripped to the bone for you when you want to get wild, and the Prowler, all decked out with everything on it, when you took you girl out. That was the original intent for both those cars. The Viper didn't even have power windows. And also, my 02 says 2,200 lbs on the registration, not 2,800 and will blow off a stock C-7 Corvette. Under horsepowered never comes to mind.

_Really great looking car that when sold new, had 'market value adjustment' being added on to the MSRP sticker. Was it worth it? Not really, because the car was doomed with the V6, and the Chrysler parts bin. After the car went away, another major auto manufacturer created a vehicle that had the same type of 'retro' cache(but with quickness), a Chevy SSR!(Thankfully many parts used in the vehicle to the discerning customer's eyes were inclusive to the hardtop/convertible truck)._
